Azealia Banks Biography and Career:

Azealia Amanda Banks is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. Her birth name is Azealia Zili Banks, and she was born on May 31, 1991. She was born and raised in the Harlem district of New York City, and she started putting out music on Myspace in the year 2008 before she was signed to XL Recordings when she was 18 years old. In 2011, her debut single, “212,” was a huge hit and entered the charts in various countries around the world. After that, she secured contracts with both Interscope Records and Polydor Records, but they were severed in July 2013. Banks launched her own independent record company called Chaos & Glory Recordings once she decided to pursue a career as a solo artist. Both Parlophone and Warner Records have her on their rosters at the moment.

She has released two mixtapes under her own name (Fantasea in 2012 and Slay-Z in 2016), one studio album under her own name (Broke with Expensive Taste in 2014), and two extended plays under her own name (1991 in 2012 and Icy Colors Change in 2018). Banks made her acting debut in the lead role of the musical drama Love Beats Rhymes, which was released in December 2017 and was her first cinematic role. The works of Banks, which draw on a variety of musical styles and genres, including dutch house, rap, pop, electronic music, and avant-garde, have been praised by music critics. Music outlets such as Rolling Stone and Billboard have named “212” as one of the top songs of 2011 and one of the songs that helped define the decade as a whole.

Banks have been at the center of substantial controversy throughout her career due to her outspoken views, particularly about U.S. politics and racial issues, as expressed on social media and in interviews. She was the youngest of three children and was born on May 31st, 1991 in the borough of Manhattan in the city of New York. Azealia Amanda Banks. After the death of their father from pancreatic cancer when she was just two years old, her mother raised her together with her two siblings in Harlem on her alone. Banks claims that her mother was devastated at the passing of her father and “became quite violent and abusive, both verbally and physically. As an example, she would beat me and my sisters with baseball bats, bash our heads against the walls, and constantly tell me that I was ugly.

I can still remember the time when she emptied the refrigerator of all its contents on purpose so that we wouldn’t have anything to eat.” At the age of 14, Banks left her mother’s house to live with her older sister since the level of violence there was getting worse. Banks developed an early passion for the performing arts, namely musical theatre, as well as dancing, acting, and singing. She made her stage debut at the age of 16 in a performance of the comedy-noir musical City of Angels.

It was then that she was discovered by an agent, who then took her to tryouts for TBS, Nickelodeon, and Law & Order, although she was not cast in any of those roles.  At this moment, Banks made the decision to give up on pursuing a career in acting, noting the intense competition and an overall feeling of unfulfillment in the endeavor.  As a result of this lack of satisfaction in her life, she started writing rap and R&B songs as a way to express herself creatively. She did not complete her high school education since she decided to pursue her ambition of becoming a recording artist instead.

On November 9, 2008, she made her first recording and posted it online under the alias Miss Bank$. The song was titled “Gimme a Chance.”The recording was accompanied by a tune that the artist had self-produced called “Seventeen,” which sampled a song by Ladytron with the same name. The tracks were sent to the American DJ Diplo by Banks.  She got a development deal with record label XL Records later that year, and she started working with producer Richard Russell in London. She left the label later that year owing to differing ideas, though and continued working with Russell.  Banks changed her name officially to Azealia Banks after she parted ways with XL Records and ditched the alias “Miss Bank$.” This was just before she relocated to Montreal.

She uploaded many demo recordings to YouTube, including one called “L8R” and a copy of Interpol’s song “Slow Hands.” YouTube served as her portal. Banks relocated back to New York after the validity of the visa that allowed her to work in Canada ran out. To make ends meet, she worked as a dancer at a strip club in Queens and sold keychains at a jazz club in Manhattan. “At that time, I was truly down in the dumps,” Banks explained. “I don’t have a manager, I don’t have a partner, I don’t have any friends, and I don’t have any money. Those are the four things I don’t have. I’m here working at a strip club, trying not to say the wrong thing and avoiding getting into confrontations with these gals who don’t give a shit about anything I say or do.”

Banks made her first musical offering, a single titled “212,” available for free digital download from her website in September 2011. On December 6, 2011, it was made available to the public for the first time as the official lead single from her EP entitled 1991. The song achieved moderate success on the charts in Europe, reaching its highest position of #14 in the Netherlands, #12 in the United Kingdom, and #7 in Ireland respectively. The songs “Jumanji,” “Aquababe,” and “Nathan” (which featured the rapper Styles P) were made available online before the album was officially released.

Fantasea was made available to the public on July 11 through Banks’s Twitter account. It was immediately followed by the presentation of Banks’s online radio project, Kunt.FM, the following week. The debut extended play (EP) by Banks, titled 1991, was published on May 28 in the United Kingdom and on May 29 in the United States. Although the four-track extended play (EP) that contains 212 did not qualify for the UK Albums chart, the title track of the EP did chart on the UK Singles chart at position #79. In addition, it reached position #133 on the US 200 list, as well as position #17 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart, #12 on the US Rap chart, and first place on the US Hot chart.  The Australian Recording Industry Association bestowed 1991 their gold certification in the year 2013.

It was originally planned that Banks would release her second single, “Esta Noche,” from Fantasea on September 25, 2012; however, the record was withheld the day before it was supposed to be made available owing to sampling conflicts between Banks and the record’s producer, Munchi. It was announced the following month that Banks had collaborated with Lady Gaga on two tracks, “Ratchet” and “Red Flame,” on Gaga’s third studio album, Artpop (2013). Nevertheless, these tracks did not end up being included in the final album and have not been released since then.  Banks also disclosed that she worked with Kanye West on the compilation album Cruel Summer released by G.O.O.D. Music; however, her contributions to the album were not included in the version that was released.

Banks debuted her song “BBD” on December 31, 2012, which ultimately ended up being included on her debut album titled “Broke with Expensive Taste.” At the beginning of 2012, Banks said that the title of her first studio album would be Broke with Expensive Taste. She also stated that the album would feature collaborations with musicians like Toko Yasuda, Theophilus London, Kevin Hussein, and Ariel Pink. She initially stated that the album’s lead single would be a track titled “Miss Amor,” and that it would be accompanied by a B-side, “Miss Camaraderie,” both produced by Lone, but these plans changed: in January 2013, she announced that the first official single from the album would be “Yung Rapunxel,” which was released in March 2013 through SoundCloud.

She also said that Lone would produce both of the songs on the single. Banks made the announcement in May 2013 that the second single from Broke with Expensive Taste would be titled “ATM Jam” and will feature Pharrell. She made her first performance of the song at the 2013 Glastonbury Festival on June 29, and three days later, on July 2, the New York City radio station Hot 97 broadcast the first premiere of a clean, abridged version of the studio recording. The whole studio version of “ATM Jam” was broadcast on BBC Radio 1 for the first time on July 11.

Banks stated in November 2013 that “ATM Jam” would not be included on Broke with Expensive Taste because of the unfavorable response from fans and his own lack of interest in the song. Midway through the month of July, Banks made the announcement that she was no longer affiliated with Universal Music Group after a protracted legal struggle. She is said to be in control of the work as well as the rights to it despite having released it with Interscope.  Banks released the official second single from Broke with Expensive Taste on her own label, Azealia Banks Records, on July 28, 2014. The song was titled “Heavy Metal and Reflective,” and it was released on July 28. Broke with Expensive Taste was unexpectedly made available on iTunes on November 7, 2014, under the guise of Prospect Park.
