Brad Nessler Biography and Career:
Bradley Ray Nessler is a CBS Sports college football and basketball game commentator. He was born in the United States on June 3, 1956, and his full name is Bradley Ray Nessler. The play-by-play radio duties for Georgia Tech basketball on WGST from 1980–81 through 1984–85 were shared by Nessler and Al Ciraldo. Nessler handled the play-by-play for the Atlanta Falcons from 1982 to 1988 on WGST and WSB before assuming the same position for the Minnesota Vikings during the 1988 and 1989 seasons. Nessler began his professional broadcasting career sharing play–by–play radio duties with Al Ciraldo on Georgia Tech basketball.
He has also done play-by-play for telecasts of ACC football and basketball for the Jefferson-Pilot, and he was the voice of the Miami Dolphins on their preseason television broadcasts for several years. When Nessler began calling college football for ABC in 1997, he was rated as the #3 play-by-play man behind Keith Jackson and Brent Musburger. This was the year when Nessler began his career in the broadcasting industry. When Jackson reduced the number of games he called on the East Coast in 1999, he was elevated to play-by-play announcer for the second team.
From 2006 until the end of the 2008 season, he was a play-by-play announcer for the first team on Saturday afternoons. ESPN announced in July 2009 that Nessler will be moving up to the top play-by-play man position for ESPN’s college football coverage. In this role, Nessler would be primarily responsible for the ESPN Saturday Primetime game, which airs at 7:45 PM Eastern Time. Nessler worked as a commentator for the NBA from 2002 to 2004, during which time he was responsible for announcing the 2003 NBA Finals. During this particular period, Nessler was accused of not knowing game strategy very well, lacking rhythm and enthusiasm in his game call, not bringing out the best in his partners, frequently ignoring the score, and having a tendency to stammer. ESPN debuted its coverage of Monday Night Football with a Week 1 doubleheader on September 11, 2006, marking the network’s first game of the season.
The second game, which featured the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders, was called by Nessler, Ron Jaworski, Dick Vermeil, and Bonnie Bernstein. Nessler was a member of the broadcast team. On September 13, 2010, Nessler again worked a Monday Night Football game. This time, he joined Trent Dilfer and Suzy Kolber to provide play-by-play commentary for the second game of the night’s Week 1 doubleheader. The contest featured the San Diego Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs. On September 12, 2011, Nessler and Dilfer called the second game of the Week 1 doubleheader between the Oakland Raiders and the Denver Broncos.
During the game, Oakland’s Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 63-yard field goal, which tied the NFL record. In May of 2011, Nessler was hired by NFL Network to call its Thursday Night Football telecasts. During his time with the network, he was paired with analyst Mike Mayock for a package of eight games. Before CBS Sports took over the responsibility for the game package beginning with the 2014 NFL season, he continued to call the games in the package during the 2012 and 2013 NFL seasons, during which the number of games he called increased to thirteen.
On May 31, 2016, CBS Sports announced that Nessler would be returning to the network to replace the departing Verne Lundquist as the lead play-by-play announcer for SEC college football games beginning with the 2017 season. Nessler will take over for Lundquist starting with the 2017 season. After that, he got back together with Danielson, with whom he collaborated at ESPN and ABC between 1992 and 1999. Jenny Dell and Gene Steratore, a former referee in the National Football League, have been joining the trio every week since 2022. In addition, he is the voice of the network’s play-by-play broadcasts for college basketball, typically working alongside commentator Bill Raftery.
On November 5, 2016, Nessler called his first SEC game for CBS, Florida’s match against Arkansas. After waiting another month, he was appointed lead college football announcer for CBS’ coverage of the Sun Bowl. That kicked off an avalanche as Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah subsequently replied, “The Big 12 sounds nice; we’ll go there too.” Washington and Oregon decided to leave the Pac-12 and join the Big 10 as the conference continued its downward spiral. This will be the last season for Texas and Oklahoma in the Big 12 before they relocate to the SEC. Since Oklahoma is exiting the conference, one of the best rivalries in college football – Bedlam – will play its final game in 2023. Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy remarked that losing such a fun game is a shame for college football – though it’s not his school’s responsibility.
The Bedlam game has been called off because Oklahoma has decided to withdraw from the Big 12 conference. Period. It is entirely unrelated to Oklahoma State in any way. Do you think that appeals to me? “No,” was Gundy’s response. The legendary announcer Brad Nessler, who has called college football games across the country for the past three decades, believes that losing the Pac-12 will be detrimental to the sport. “You know, when you’ve got UCLA or USC going to play Rutgers or whatever the case might be, it’s going to be different,” said Nessler. “It’s going to be a different atmosphere.”
“You are going to damage a significant number of rivalries. It was upsetting to watch the entire conference collapse in that manner. Stanford, California, Washington State, and Oregon State are the only universities in a position where their futures are questionable. Pat Chun, the director of athletics at Washington State, stated that even though everything transpired so rapidly, the downfall was in the works for many years. In 2018, Nessler worked for TBS as a commentator for the NCAA March Madness tournament for the first time. When USC and UCLA declared they would be leaving the conference for the Big 10 in 2024, it was the first step toward the conference’s eventual extinction.
Colorado was the second to make the move, signing up to rejoin the Big 12, where they competed from 1996 through 2010. This decision was made even though there was so much uncertainty around the future of the conference. Play-by-play for SEC games have been given by Nessler beginning in 2006, alongside Sean Farnham or Dick Vitale and sideline reporter Heather Cox. Nessler did this alongside Sean Farnham or Dick Vitale for Super Tuesday and Thursday Night Showcase. In addition, he appeared on ABC in the past and covered college basketball games for ESPN on Saturday afternoons throughout the regular season.
When he started working for ABC in 1997, he worked with Gary Danielson as his college football color man. However, from 1999 to 2008, he called games alongside Bob Griese, who had previously traded roles with Danielson. Paul Maguire has been working as a third color commentator for the Saturday afternoon college telecasts since 2006 when he first joined Nessler and Griese. It was announced at the same time that Nessler would be moving to ESPN’s Saturday Primetime telecasts that he would be teamed with former Penn State quarterback Todd Blackledge and sideline reporter Erin Andrews beginning with the 2009 college football season. This crew called the Capital One Bowl on ABC on January 1, 2010.
