Charlie Manuel Biography and Career:
Charles Fuqua Manuel Jr. is a well-known former professional baseball player, coach, and manager from the United States. He was born on January 4, 1944. After playing for the Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Dodgers for parts of six seasons in Major League Baseball, he went on to play for another six seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball with the Yakult Swallows and the Kintetsu Buffaloes. His playing career spanned a total of twelve seasons.
Manuel received the Pacific League Most Valuable Player Award in 1979 after compiling at most minuscule batting average.312 while hitting at least 37 home runs in his four consecutive seasons in the NPB. After playing, he became a manager with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cleveland Indians, where he won the 2008 World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays and the 2009 National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In 2014, he was honored by being inducted into the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame. Manuel took over for John Mallee as the Phillies’ hitting coach on August 13, 2019, and will stay in that role for the balance of the season. Manuel was raised in Virginia throughout his youth, despite being born in Northfork, located in West Virginia. His family had relocated to Virginia at the time of his birth.
His mother, June, was traveling to see her mother when he was born, and he was delivered in the car. Charles Sr., Manuel’s father, was a Pentecostal preacher, and the family resided in Wythe and Grayson Counties in Virginia until they settled in Buena Vista, Virginia, when Charlie, the third of 11 children and the eldest son, was 12 years old. Charlie was the oldest son. Manuel was Manuel’s third son.
While at Parry McCluer High School in Buena Vista, Manuel excelled in four sports, becoming a star. He played baseball, football, basketball, and track and field and served as captain of the baseball and basketball teams. His initial interest was basketball, and he had gotten scholarship offers in that sport. However, his ambitions and life would undergo a significant transformation shortly before graduating from high school.
In April of 1963, Manuel’s father took his own life as a result of his terrible illness, which included diabetes as well as cardiac difficulties. In the message he left behind, he expressed his desire for his brother Charlie, who was already married and the father of a child, to care for his mother and other siblings.
He turned down basketball scholarship offers and an academic scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania to consider requests from the Minnesota Twins, the New York Yankees, the Detroit Tigers, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He ultimately signed with the Minnesota Twins out of high school in 1963 for $30,000 ($290,000 in terms of current dollar values), which he received as a signing bonus.
Manuel was mainly a pinch-hitter and left-fielder during his time with the Minnesota Twins from 1969 to 1972 and then with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1974 and 1975. He played for both teams. In the early Topps baseball cards that feature him, “Chuck” Manuel’s name appeared. In 384 at-bats, he had a batting average of.198.When Manuel moved to Japan to play baseball, it was at that point that his career in the sport took off. His fellow players and spectators named Manuel “Aka-Oni” (The Red Devil) because of the tenacious way he played the game and his power-hitting ability.
In 1977, he contributed to the Yakult Swallows of the Central League, reaching second place for the first time in the franchise’s history by hitting.316/.403/.690, which was good for second place in the league. He also hit 42 home runs, which was enough for third place, and he drove in 97 runs, which was good for fifth place. He led the Swallows to their first pennant and the Japan Championship Series in 1978 by hitting.312/.372/.596 with 39 home runs, which was good for third place in the league, and 103 RBIs, which was good for fifth place.
In the first eight weeks of the 1979 season, Manuel hit 25 home runs while playing for the Kintetsu Buffaloes of the Pacific League. During this time, Manuel was a member of the Hall of Fame. On June 19, 1979, he was injured after being struck by a pitch thrown by Soroku Yagisawa during a game against the Lotte Orions. Manuel’s jaw was fractured in six different places due to the rise. As a consequence of an incident that occurred while he played in the lower levels earlier in his career, he wore a dental bridge.
Because there was nothing for the surgeons to wire together, they implanted three metal plates in his skull and severed nerves from his face. This allowed them to bypass the need to connect anything. After spending six weeks in the hospital, Manuel finally returned to playing soccer, much to the dismay of his concerned family and the recommendation of the medical professionals. The Buffaloes had never won a pennant and needed help maintaining their lead in the Pacific League.
Manuel used a football facemask that was attached to his helmet so that he could protect his jaw. He wore the helmet in the first few games he played in, but he eventually stopped doing so since it blocked his eyesight when he was at the plate. He won the home run championship in 1979 with 37 home runs, his final total for the season.
He was the driving force behind Kintetsu’s first-ever pennant victory. He was the first American to win the award for Most Valuable Player since 1964. He hit.324/.434 (good for second in the league)/.712 (good for first in the company), had 65 walks (good for second in the company), 37 home runs (good for first in the company), and 94 RBIs (good for fifth in the company).
After a year had passed, Manuel returned to Kintetsu and led them to the second-half title and the pennant. At the end of the season, he ended with a batting average of.325 (good for fifth in the league), a slugging percentage of.400 (good for first in the block), a run total of 88 (good for fourth), 48 home runs (good for first in the company), and 129 RBIs (good for first in the company). It was one of the finest seasons for a player from the United States to have in Japan up to that point in time.
After being released by Kintetsu due to contract issues, he returned to the Yakult Swallows in 1981. After a long and fruitful career in Japan, Manuel retired with a. 303-lifetime batting average, 189 home runs, and 491 RBIs. Along with his brothers Leron and Leon Lee, and Randy Bass, many people in Japan at the time believed him to be the finest imported baseball player from the United States.
Manuel learned the language while stationed in Japan and is now fluent. The ability to speak Japanese and the experiences gained in Japan was beneficial upon return to the United States while managing players such as So Taguchi and Tadahito Iguchi. The Philadelphia Phillies recruited Manuel to work as a special assistant to the general manager not long after he was let go from his position as manager of the Cleveland Indians. After the conclusion of the 2004 campaign, Manuel was selected to succeed Larry Bowa as the 51st manager of the club.
