Dave Righetti Biography and Career:

Born on November 28, 1958, David Allan Righetti, well known by his nickname “Rags,” is a professional baseball coach and former player from the United States at the professional level. Righetti was a left-handed pitcher who participated in Major League Baseball from 1979 to 1995. During that time, he was a member of the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, and Chicago White Sox.

Beginning in 2000 and continuing until 2017, he was the Giants’ pitching coach. The Yankees decided in 1984 to transition Righetti from a starting pitcher to a relief pitcher and use him as their closer. Righetti started his career as a starting pitcher. His accomplishment in 1981 earned him the title of Rookie of the Year in the American League (AL). On July 4, 1983, he pitched a no-hitter as the starting pitcher. His performance as a closer earned him two awards for the Rolaids Relief Man of the Year in the American League, and he participated in two MLB All-Star Games.

During his career, he was the only player in the game’s history to not only throw a no-hitter but also lead the league in saves. In the following years, Dennis Eckersley and Derek Lowe were able to do the same thing. Righetti was born in the city of San Jose, California. The man who was his father, Leo, played baseball professionally. The age difference between Dave and his brother, Steve, is thirteen months. Baseball was a sport that Leo helped his boys develop a passion for.

Dave and Steve, as members of the Lincoln Glen Little League team known as Letterman, were both outstanding players. Dave played in the outfield, while Steve played shortstop. Righetti pursued his high school education at Pioneer. Because of how Righetti threw the ball, Paddy Cottrell, a scout for the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball, noted him and advised that he become a pitcher. He received a spot on the All-League team when he was a senior.

Righetti maintained his growth as a pitcher while at San Jose City College, where he was a baseball team member. He triumphed over his colleague Dave Stieb to earn the title of junior college player of the year. The Rangers decided to choose Righetti on January 11, 1977, in the first round of the amateur selection, tenth overall, at the recommendation of Cottrell.

In the sixth round, the Rangers picked Steve, and they informed Dave that they would only sign Steve if he joined them. There was a signing between the Righetti brothers and the Rangers. This was the year Dave debuted in the professional baseball league, pitching for the Asheville Tourists of the Class A Western Carolinas League. He recorded 11–3 wins and losses during his time with the team.

Righetti competed in the Class AA Texas League in 1978 as a pitcher with the Tulsa Drillers. Righetti set a new record for the league with 21 strikeouts in July versus the Midland Rock Hounds. Jerry Walker, a New York Yankees scout, was in the grandstand during the game. While George Steinbrenner, owner of the Yankees, was in the process of discussing a trade with Brad Corbett, owner of the Rangers, during that offseason, he made it a point to wait until the very end of their discussions to request that Righetti be included in the deal.

The Yankees acquired Righetti on November 10, 1978, along with Juan Beníquez, Mike Griffin, Greg Jemison, and Paul Mirabella. On the other hand, the Rangers obtained Sparky Lyle, Domingo Ramos, Mike Heath, Larry McCall, Dave Rajsich, and cash. The Yankees referred to Righetti as “the next Ron Guidry” when they first introduced him.

In January 1979, Righetti was on the verge of being dealt to the Minnesota Twins. However, the Twins and Yankees could not finalize a transaction that would have included the transfer of Righetti, Chris Chambliss, Juan Beníquez, and Dámaso García to Minnesota in exchange for Rod Carew. On September 16, 1979, Righetti debuted in the big leagues with the Yankees, wearing the number 56 on his jersey.

During this game against the Detroit Tigers, he threw for five innings, allowing three hits, six walks, and three earned runs while striking out three batters. Billy Martin, the Yankees manager, announced that Righetti “will win 20 games next season” after he made his second start against the team.

Righetti, on the other hand, had a difficult time maintaining control of his pitching. As a result, he spent the 1980 season with the Columbus Clippers of the Class AAA International League. During that time, he had a record of 6–10 wins–losses, a 4.63 earned run average, 101 walks, and 139 strikeouts in 142 innings pitched.

Even though Righetti had a strong performance during spring training in 1981, the Yankees needed more places on their roster to accommodate him. Thus, he started the season with Columbus. During May 1981, the Yankees brought Righetti back from Columbus after he had thrown to a perfect record of 5–0, a 1.00 earned run average, and 50 strikeouts in 45 innings. Assigned to him was the number 19 on the outfit.

Dick Tidrow wore the number 19 for the Yankees, Catfish Hunter wore the number 29, Ron Davis wore the number 39, and Guidry wore the number 49. The Yankees saved the numbers ending in 9 for pitchers they believed had potential. Righetti was a solid starter with the Yankees, compiling an 8–4 win–loss record in 15 games started, with a 2.06 earned run average (ERA) and 89 strikeouts in 105 innings thrown during the 1981 season. Righetti was a member of the team’s starting rotation with the Yankees.

Despite facing competition from Rich Gedman and Bob Ojeda, Righetti emerged victorious as the American League’s Rookie of the Year. Throughout the 1981 American League Division Series, Righetti was twice victorious against the Milwaukee Brewers. However, he was knocked out of game three of the 1981 World Series, which the Los Angeles Dodgers won. However, he made it to the World Series that year but could not because of the injury.

In the spring training season 1982, Righetti pitched to an earned run average of 8.53. According to Steinbrenner, he “got outvoted then” when he attempted to demote Righetti to the lower league level of baseball. Through June 1982, Righetti recorded 5–5 wins–losses and a 4.23 earned run average. Although he was in fourth place in the American League with 77 strikeouts, the fact that he walked 62 batters was considered an issue.
