Desmond Howard Biography and Career:

Desmond Kevin Howard is an American retired football wide receiver who played in the National Football League for 11 seasons. He played college football at the University of Michigan, where he won the Heisman Trophy as a senior and was picked fourth overall in the 1992 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. Howard spent most of his career on special teams as a return specialist and holds the NFL single-season record for punt return yardage. With the Green Bay Packers, Howard was voted Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXXI after returning a kickoff for a 99-yard touchdown, the most extended return in Super Bowl history. He is the only special teams player to get the award. He was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010. During his college career at the University of Michigan, Howard set or tied five NCAA and 12 Wolverines records.

In 1991, Howard caught 62 catches for 985 yards and scored 23 touchdowns while rushing for 180 yards and collecting 694 yards on special teams, averaging 27.5 yards per kickoff return and 14.1 yards per punt return. He earned the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and Walter Camp Award, receiving first-team All-American accolades. Howard received 85 percent of the first-place votes in balloting for the Heisman, the most significant margin in history at that time. Howard also received a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1992. In 2010, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and honored as the inaugural Michigan Football Legend, a program commemorating former players equal to a retired jersey number. Each Michigan player to wear Howard’s No. 21 jersey was to wear a patch honoring Howard and dress at a locker holding a plaque with his name and time of tenure at Michigan.

At the end of his time at Michigan, Howard had 249 rushing yards, 134 receptions for 2,146 receiving yards, 1,211 kickoff return yards, and 339 yards returning punts. In addition, he had scored 37 touchdowns during his time there. John Cooper, the head coach of Ohio State, instructed his squad to avoid giving Howard opportunities to score. The punt that Howard returned for a touchdown during the game was meant to go out of bounds, so the players on the Ohio State special teams weren’t expecting him to score. While in the end zone, Howard intended to perform a backflip, but he “chickened out” and instead mimicked the position of the football player depicted on the Heisman trophy bust.

As a result, he received a great deal of attention from the media almost away. Steve Rushin, who likened his behavior to Muhammad Ali’s taunting of opponents, remarked that although Howard’s pose did not closely resemble that of the statue, “that looks more like the Heisman Trophy of our imagination than the Heisman trophy itself… thousands of people must have instantly picked up some object and tried to do the same thing.” Howard was awarded the Heisman Trophy for his performance. Later, Howard stated that “all of a sudden, everyone was doing it”; many have replicated the behavior, including fellow athletes, celebrities, and Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. According to Howard, the pose has evolved into a greeting for fans who come into contact with him, although he avoids striking the pose himself “because the more I do it, it kind of cheapens it.”

When Howard first arrived in Michigan, he played tailback and had a hard time breaking into the starting lineup. Greg Harden, a counselor at the University of Michigan, met with him and assisted him in developing his self-confidence and achieving success both on and off the field. In 2014, Howard stated in an interview with 60 Minutes that “if Greg Harden wasn’t at the University of Michigan…I don’t win the Heisman.” After graduating from college, Howard was chosen by the Washington Redskins in the first round of the 1992 NFL Draft. The Redskins’ selection placed him fourth overall. The piece was considered a luxury for the Redskins, who had just won Super Bowl XXVI and featured receivers Art Monk, Gary Clark, and Ricky Sanders on their roster.

Concerned that the Green Bay Packers would select Howard with the fifth overall pick, the Washington Redskins jumped ahead of them in the draft by trading two of their first-round choices and their third-round selection to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for their first-round pick and their third-round pick. The Redskins’ selection of Howard in the first draft round was their highest since the third round of the 1964 draft when they chose Hall of Fame receiver Charley Taylor. The head coach of the Redskins, Joe Gibbs, had this to say about Howard: “This kid doesn’t have any flaws. We couldn’t be happier.

Throughout his 11-year career, Howard’s primary strength was his ability to return punts and kickoffs,; his performance as a receiver was never very noteworthy. Even though he had 92 receptions in his first four seasons, he was at his best as a punt and kickoff returner his whole career. After being picked with the 55th overall choice in the 1995 NFL expansion draft, Howard spent the entire 1995 season playing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. That year was his only year in the league. In addition to his ten kickoff returns, he added 26 receptions and one touchdown. The 1996 season he played for the Green Bay Packers was quickly the most memorable of his professional career. He led the National Football League in punt returns, punt return yards, punt return average, and punt return touchdowns. In addition, he led the league in kickoff return yards and receptions.

The previous record for most yards gained on a punt return was set by Fulton Walker in 1985 with 692 yards. His 875 punt return yards set a new record in the NFL. When the Packers were playing the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs of the NFL in 1996, Howard had a punt return for a touchdown and a punt return of 46 yards that set up another score. Both of these plays occurred in the same game. However, he did make an odd mistake in the second half: he did not come out of the locker room in time for the beginning of the third quarter. This happened after the first half. Because no one on the Packers’ squad noticed, the team was shorthanded for the second-half kickoff, with no one manning the returner position and only 10 players total on the field. Because of this, San Francisco could run down the area and recover the kickoff, ultimately leading to a touchdown for the 49ers. Despite this, the Packers were victorious and advanced to the Super Bowl XXXI, where they faced off against the New England Patriots.

The Big Ten Network included Howard on “The Mount Rushmore of Michigan Football” on December 12, 2014, based on the results of online fan voting for the position. Charles Woodson, Tom Harmon, and Anthony Carter came to pay their respects alongside Howard at the event. At a ceremony held on November 28, 2015, before Michigan’s game against Ohio State, Howard’s number 21, along with those of Gerald Ford, Tom Harmon, Ron Kramer, Bennie Osterbaan, and the Wistert brothers Albert, Alvin, and Whitey were honored by having their jerseys retired officially. Following the event, Howard observed: “Any time you have your name mentioned along with Gerald Ford, you’ve done something right.”
