In all, there are sixty-four that will never see the light of day. It will be another sixty-four days before I am allowed to come back.” On August 21, 2012, the Country & Cold Cans EP by Bentley was released for the first time on iTunes. Bentley has a certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration that enables him to fly privately. In addition to flying a Cessna Citation CJ4, he is the proud owner of a Cirrus SR22T[39].
In an interview with Peter Cooper of the Tennessean, Bentley shared the following information about his songwriting process: “I spend the morning writing songs, and then I spend the rest of the day getting ready for the concert that night.” My set list is always evolving to keep things fresh. When I’m out on the road, the only thing I can think about is the show that’s going to happen. My goal is simple: I want to be considered among the most impressive live performers performing any kind of music. This is a goal I am not ashamed of having accomplished. When Bentley was 13 years old, a buddy showed him how to play the electric guitar, and he was instantly captivated by the instrument.
During his leisure time in the 1980s, Bentley, much like a large number of other youths who were enamored with playing the guitar at the time, spent his time fiddling with his instrument and tried to emulate rock giants Van Halen and Billy Idol. When he and his friends were having one of their jam sessions, the cops showed up because someone had called in a complaint about how loud it was. When Bentley was a youngster, he developed an unhealthy preoccupation with the guitar, but he wasn’t particularly drawn to any one kind of music. According to what Bentley said in his biography on his own website, rock music simply didn’t really click with him. It was really close to getting there, but it did not end up being there. I tried my best to sing in David Lee Roth’s manner, but I simply couldn’t do it. And I spent three years of my life by listening to a plethora of horrible ’80s hair metal bands.
At the age of 17, Bentley was exposed to the music of Hank Williams Jr. by a friend who suggested that he listen to the song “Man to Man” by Hank Williams Jr., which relates the narrative of a son’s talk with his late father. On his website, Bentley explains, “that experience actually impacted my whole viewpoint.” Everything worked out perfectly without any effort. I merely was aware that I cherished listening to country music. Without giving it a second thought, Bentley abruptly switched his loyalties from rock music to country music. Instead of concentrating on the lead guitar and the cutting melodies it offers, which is what he had been doing up until this point, he was now studying the rhythm guitar, which is what gives the song its pulse or beat. Aside from that, Bentley researched the process of writing lyrics by reworking the songs of other artists and putting his own words into the music he reworked.
