Elena Delle Donne Biography and Career:

Elena Delle Donne is an American professional basketball player who currently competes for the Washington Mystics of the Women’s National Basketball Association. Delle Donne was born on September 5, 1989, in the United States (WNBA).  From 2009 through 2013, Delle Donne was a member of the college basketball team known as the Delaware Blue Hens. She was the second overall pick in the 2013 WNBA draught, and the Chicago Sky used that pick to select her. She led the Sky all the way to the 2014 WNBA Finals, where they were ultimately defeated by the Phoenix Mercury. The Washington Mystics were able to win their first WNBA title in 2019 because of the contributions of Elena Delle Donne, who was acquired by the team in a trade in 2017.

Delle Donne is the first player in WNBA history to reach the 50–40–90 club, and she has earned the WNBA Most Valuable Player award twice (in 2015 and 2019). She has also been picked to participate in six different All-Star teams. In the year 2021, she was included on The W25, which is a list of the top 25 players in the league’s history up to that point. Donne received her 6’5 “(1.96 m) height from both of her parents; her father is 6’6″ (1.98 m), and her mother is 6’2″ (1.88 m). Her father played collegiate golf, and her mother is 6’2” (1.88 m) (1.88 m).The challenges she faced as a child due to her unusual height left an indelible impression on her formative years. According to a report published by ESPN in 2016, her first recollection is of going on a shopping excursion with her mother when she was three years old and hearing other shoppers advise her mother that an 8-year-old should not be using a pacifier.

This is the memory that has stuck with her. When she was in the third grade, her teacher gave the class an assignment in which they had to measure themselves using lengths of paper. She felt “humiliated” when her paper was far longer than that of her peers. Within two years of the traumatic event, a physician proposed beginning injections to slow her growth, but her mother declined. She had already reached the height of 6 feet and 0 inches by the time she was in the seventh grade ” (1.83 m). According to the same ESPN article, Elena Delle Donne had to accept the fact that she possessed “a body that could accomplish a great many things that the body of her older sister, Lizzie, couldn’t.” Lizzie was born unable to speak, deaf, and blind.

She also has cerebral palsy and autism. She was born with these conditions. Delle Donne became a high school basketball superstar at Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Delaware, and quickly rose to national prominence during his time there. She was a McDonald’s All-American and was regarded as the number one overall high school prospect by Scout.com. She also led Ursuline to three consecutive victories in the Delaware State Championship. She was the first and only student at Ursuline to ever score more than 2,000 points during her high school career. In addition, she set the record in 2005–2006 for the most consecutive free throws made by a girl in a high school setting when she made 80 of them in a row. In addition, the WBCA recognized Delle Donne as an All-American.

She was selected as the Most Valuable Player for the Red team at the 2007 WBCA High School All-America Game, which she played in. She finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Volleyball was another sport in which she competed. 2007 was the year that Delle Donne and the Ursuline volleyball team won the DIAA state championship in volleyball. During a match between the number one and number two teams in the state, she recorded 20 kills, which was a season high for her. The match took place in Padua. After an outstanding high school career in which she established herself as the most highly touted women’s basketball recruit since Candace Parker, Elena Delle Donne was awarded a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Connecticut.

During this time, Delle Donne became one of the best players in the country. However, after only two days in Storrs, Connecticut, Delle Donne made the rash decision to withdraw from the summer school program that Connecticut was offering in early June of 2008. Delle Donne held her family, particularly her older sister Lizzie, who suffers from cerebral palsy in addition to being blind and deaf, in very high regard. She was not prepared to be apart from her loved ones at this time. One week after moving out of Connecticut, Delle Donne announced over the phone from her residence in Wilmington, Delaware, that she had “a significant number of privacy concerns to address. Nobody else outside of my family is aware of what’s going on. I am going to have a long sabbatical for personal reasons right now.” Before the start of the 2007–2008 season in high school, she took a vacation of the same nature.

On August 16, 2008, Delle Donne made the announcement that she would not take the scholarship due to burnout.  Instead, she made the decision to enroll at the University of Delaware and play volleyball for them as a walk-on player. During the 2008–2009 season, she was a middle hitter for the University of Delaware.  The 19–16 record that the Delaware Blue Hens concluded the 2008 season with was their final standing. They finished in first place in the conference tournament after posting a 9–5 record in the Colonial Athletic Association, which they played. They competed in the NCAA Tournament and made it all the way to the first round, but they were eliminated by Oregon. In 2009, Delle Donne decided to switch sports and play for the basketball team rather than continue playing volleyball.

On June 2, 2009, Delle Donne made the announcement that she would be participating in the sport of basketball for the Blue Hens as a redshirt freshman during the 2009–10 season. Graham Hays, a reporter for ESPN, stated in 2012 of her comeback to the sport, “it cannot be a complete coincidence that it came the year Gene returned to Delaware and started to work for his dad’s firm.” Hays was referring to Gene’s move back to Delaware to work for the family business.  Delle Donne described a trip she had during the summer of 2009 to the school that Lizzie was attending. The interview took place in 2016, and ESPN was the outlet that conducted the interview. During her time there, she connected with another woman who attended the same school. This individual was a basketball lover who needed a wheelchair as a result of cerebral palsy.

This individual encouraged Elena to “accomplish everything you can with your skills, just like we do.” Delle Donne had an extremely successful rookie year despite being just a freshman. She finished third among all women’s Division I basketball players in terms of her scoring average of 26.7 points per game. On February 18, 2010, she scored 54 points in a game that James Madison won, which was the greatest single-game point total by any Division I female basketball player that season. The contest was played against James Madison. During the 2009–10 school year, she was honored with the CAA Rookie of the Week award six times and the Player of the Week award once. By a vote of CAA coaches, sports information directors, and members of the media, she was selected as the “Player of the Year” and “Rookie of the Year” in women’s basketball for the CAA.

Since Lucienne Berthieu of Old Dominion accomplished the feat in 1999, this was the first time a player had won both trophies in the same calendar year. There has never been a single male player who has won both honors in the same season. Delle Donne’s sophomore year, the team got off to a strong start, but then she started showing symptoms that were consistent with the illness. She did something she had never done before, which was to beg to be taken out of a game during she was playing against Penn State. Lyme disease was the conclusion reached by the medical staff following a battery of tests performed on the patient.

Even though she had a rough rest of the season, she was instrumental in her team’s run to the championship game of the conference tournament and their invitation to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. When Delle Donne was a junior, she finished the season with an average of 28.1 points scored per game, which was good enough to lead the nation in scoring. The number of people who attended Blue Hens games increased by a factor of 2.5 compared to the previous year as a direct result of her prowess.  In a game against Hofstra on February 16, 2012, Delle Donne led her team to victory and scored 42 points, bringing her career total to over 2,000 points.

Due to their victory in the CAA Tournament, Delaware has earned a berth in the 2012 NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Tournament. In the Blue Hens’ victory over UALR in the first round, Delle Donne was responsible for 39 of the team’s first 56 points scored. Despite Delle Donne scoring 34 points in the next game against Kansas, in which Delaware held a lead at halftime, the Jayhawks were able to pull off the victory. Delle Donne battled Lyme disease once again during the 2012–13 season, which resulted in her missing four games due to the sickness. On the 12th of December, Delle Donne made her return and led the team to a loss to Maryland with 19 points and 6 rebounds. The game ended with a final score of 69–53. The Bob Carpenter Center, which serves as the home court for the Delaware Blue Hens, hosted its all-time record attendance of 5,089 fans for this women’s basketball game.
