Eli Roth Biography and Career:

Eli Raphael Roth is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, and actor. He was born on April 18, 1972, in the United States. He is most closely linked with the horror genre as a film director and producer. He is behind the camera for the films Cabin Fever (2003) and Hostel, both of which he directed (2005). Roth remained active in the horror film industry, leading the films “Hostel: Part II” (2007) and “The Green Inferno” (2010), respectively (2013). In addition, he branched out into other genres, directing films such as the erotic thriller Knock Knock (2015) and the action blockbuster Death Wish (2018), which was a remake of the 1974 version of the film.  In addition, he directed the fantasy comedy film The House with a Clock in Its Walls in 2018.

This was his first film with a PG rating and his greatest domestic grosser to date.  As an actor, Roth is known for his role as Donny “The Bear Jew” Donowitz in the war picture Inglourious Basterds (2009), for which he was nominated for a Critic’s Choice Movie Award and got a SAG Award as a member of the ensemble cast. Many journalists have labeled him a member of the so-called “Splat Pack,” a collective of filmmakers known for their controversial bloody, and overtly violent horror flicks.  At the Stanley Film Festival in 2013, Roth was honored with the festival’s Visionary Award for his contributions to the horror genre. In Newton, Massachusetts, Roth was born the middle of three sons to Sheldon Roth, a psychiatrist/psychoanalyst and clinical professor at Harvard Medical School, and Cora Roth, a painter.

Roth’s father was a clinical professor at Harvard Medical School. Adam, born in May 1970, is his older brother, and Gabriel, born later, is his younger brother (born in December 1974). Roth had a Jewish upbringing (his family was Jewish emigrants from Austria, Hungary, Russia, and Poland). He is fluent in English, French, and Italian and has a basic understanding of Russian. After seeing Ridley Scott’s Alien when he was eight, Eli Roth started working behind the camera (1979). Before graduating from Newton South High School and enrolling in the film program at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, he and his brothers, Adam and Gabriel, collaborated on producing more than one hundred short films.

While attending college, Roth worked as an online cybersex operator for Penthouse Magazine, pretending to be a woman. Additionally, he worked as a production assistant on feature films to help fund his filmmaking endeavors.  Roth was also responsible for running the office of producer Frederick Zollo, a position he left shortly after graduating to focus solely on his writing. He obtained unemployment benefits and eventually got work as an assistant on Howard Stern’s Private Parts. He stayed at Silvercup Studios in Queens at night to work on his scripts while Stern slept.

When Roth arrived in Los Angeles, actress Camryn Manheim helped him land one of his first jobs in Hollywood, working as an extra on the television show The Practice. When Manheim was filming the show, Roth would remain in her dressing room and work on his scripts. While Roth was working for Zollo in New York, the two had begun to develop a friendship with one another. During Roth’s family Passover seder, she also met Howie Nuchow, a former executive vice president of Mandalay Sports Entertainment from Boston. This encounter catalyzed Roth’s debut animation project, Chowdaheads, which was released the following year. Roth also collaborated with Manheim on writing a concept that was then pitched to the production business run by Bill Mechanic, who had previously served as CEO and Chairman of Fox Studios.

The proposal was titled The Extra. Roth and his roommate in college, Randy Pearlstein, were the authors of the book “Cabin Fever.” They based the notion on Roth’s experience of getting a skin illness while riding ponies at a family friend’s farm in Iceland in 1991. Roth’s experience served as the inspiration for this.  Most of it was written in 1996 when Roth was working as a production assistant for the film Private Parts, which Howard Stern directed. In 2001, the movie “Cabin Fever” was made on a budget of $1.5 million, all of which came from private investors. During the 2002 edition of the Toronto International Picture Festival, Lionsgate purchased the rights to the film for $3.5 million, making it the most lucrative sale of that particular festival.

It was a picture released in 2003, the highest-grossing film that Lionsgate had that year. It earned $22 million at the box office in the United States and $35 million globally. After the movie was released, the price of a share of Lionsgate stock increased to nearly $6 from its previous price of $1.98. The firm then utilized the proceeds from the increase in the value of its stock to acquire Artisan Entertainment. Roth rose to prominence in the horror genre due to his work on Cabin Fever. Quentin Tarantino referred to it as “the best new American film” in an interview with Premiere Magazine in 2004.

In 2016, a new version of Cabin Fever was released, directed by Travis Zariwny. Hostel, Roth’s second feature film, was produced for slightly more than $4 million and released in 2005. In January of 2006, it had the best opening weekend of any film, grossing $20 million in its first three days of release. The movie ultimately made more than $180 million in revenue from sales of its DVDs and grossed $80 million in box offices worldwide. The Czech Republic served as the location for all of the exterior shots, even though the plot takes place in Slovakia.

In the movie, three close friends are coaxed into checking into a hostel where they believe all of their sexual desires will be fulfilled. Instead, they find themselves in the hands of a multinational criminal organization that caters to wealthy sadists by offering them the opportunity to witness torture and murder up close and personal. The movie received the highest score possible on Bravo TV’s list of the 30 Even Scarier Movie Moments, while readers of Empire Magazine chose Hostel as the best horror film released in 2007. Reportedly, Roth turned down directing positions at studios to work at Hostel. He accepted a director’s compensation of only $10,000 to make the production’s budget as cheap as possible and ensure that there would be no restrictions placed on the film’s level of violence.

Roth is credited for establishing the horror subgenre known as “torture porn” or “gorno” by cinema critic David Edelstein in the January 2006 issue of New York magazine. This subgenre uses extreme violence to stimulate audiences in the same way that a sexual act would. In 2007, Roth created and narrated the faux trailer section Thanksgiving for Grindhouse. He also participated in Death Proof, the segment of the film that Tarantino directed. For their contributions to Grindhouse, Roth, and co-writer Jeff Rendell were awarded the best “screenplay” prize at the 2007 Spike TV Scream Awards, which they shared alongside Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Rob Zombie, and Edgar Wright. In 2002, Roth brought the remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark, which had been done by children, to the notice of Harry Knowles and Steven Spielberg.

The remake was shot-for-shot. He screened it at Knowles’s Butt-Numb-A-Thon film festival in December after keeping a copy in his video collection for several years. Because of the overwhelmingly positive response, Roth provided Spielberg with the recording during his first meeting at DreamWorks. The following week, an executive called and said Spielberg had seen it, was impressed, and wanted to contact the filmmakers. Roth was unfamiliar with them, but he researched each name in the film’s credits on Google until he located Jayson Lamb, the director of photography.

When Roth got in touch with them, Lamb, Chris Strompolis, and Eric Zala (who had previously worked for Activision), the filmmakers, had not communicated with each other in some years. After giving the tape to Knowles for the first time five and a half years prior, Roth felt that their film was so powerful that he had to do whatever he could to ensure fans saw it. He introduced it at its premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in May 2008 because he felt he had to do whatever he could to make sure fans saw it. Soon, the three reunited pals were touring the world, doing charity screenings. In March of 2006, Dimension Films acquired the rights to Stephen King’s novel Cell to produce a film that Roth would helm. King completed the screenplay in 2009, and actors John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson joined the project around the same time; however, Roth did not helm the film.
