Although ABC and Warner Bros. officials told the magazine she was only cast as a guest star, the announcement led to speculation and concern that Mitchell’s character would be killed off. Later, in a press statement issued by ABC, Mitchell was introduced as the lead actress on the show V, and different sites indicated that she will have a guest role in the sixth and final season of Lost. Mitchell’s character passed away in the first episode of the sixth season, but she came back for the two-part series finale, for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

Elizabeth Banks, whose birth name was Elizabeth Irene Mitchell, decided to change it so that people wouldn’t confuse her with another Elizabeth Mitchell. In 2004, Mitchell wed the actor Chris Soldevilla, with whom she shares custody of their son, C.J., who was born the following year in 2005. The couple’s inability to overcome their disagreements led to the dissolution of their marriage in 2013. My research is centered on the concepts of embodiment and enlivenment as they pertain to Roman visual culture. Specifically, I am interested in the nereids, atlantes, and cupids that populate the in-between spaces of architecture and objects, thereby framing and transforming the daily life that occurs around them. In my dissertation, I use the figure of the cupid to investigate the visual rhetorics of marginality, tactility, and power relations in the Roman-built environment.

I argue that these typically ignored and much-denigrated bodies place viewers in complicated sensory and social relationships with their surroundings. Another project that is still ongoing focuses on “interactive” triclinium floor mosaics from Gallia Narbonensis. These mosaics encourage viewers to imagine themselves as participants in the mythological scene that is shown on the floor. More generally speaking, I am fascinated by ornament and the art of marginal spaces, as well as embodied and phenomenological approaches to objects and architecture, body language in Greco-Roman visual culture, ancient representations of slavery and childhood, personifications, and the ways in which mythological and fantastical imagery connects to wider social structures and norms. I completed my undergraduate degree in classics at Cambridge, as well as my master’s degree in Latin literature there.

Currently, I am working toward completing my doctoral degree in classical archaeology at Harvard. During the course of my doctoral studies, I worked as an Agnes Mongan curatorial intern in the Division of Asian and Mediterranean Art at the Harvard Art Museums (2012-2013). In addition, I was awarded a Frederick Sheldon traveling fellowship (2013-2014) and a Kress institutional research fellowship at the Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society. Both of these fellowships allowed me to travel and conduct research, respectively (2015-2017). I have been actively participating in the excavation of Pompeiopolis in Paphlagonia/Bithynia-Pontus, Turkey, throughout the course of the previous three years (2012-2016).

Mitchell took a day job as a teaching assistant at a private kindergarten on Roosevelt Island, New York after she and Loeb both graduated in 1990.
