Geoffrey Rush, real name is Geoffrey Roy Rush, was born in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, on July 6, 1951. He is most known for his roles as villains and unstable characters in movies and plays. Rush spent his early years in a Brisbane, Queensland, Australia neighborhood. In 1968, he joined the theatrical group at the University of Queensland, and the following year, he began classes. He was employed by the Queensland Theatre Company (QTC) in 1971, and in 1972, he made his acting debut with them in a performance of Wrong Side of the Moon.
He graduated with a bachelor’s in English in 1972, and after a brief stint working for QTC, he continued his education by taking directing and mime classes in London and Paris. When Rush returned to Australia in 1977, his relationship with the QTC was again active. While he played a detective in the 1981 crime film Hoodwink, Rush is better recognized for his theater performances. He participated in Adelaide productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1982, 1983), Twelfth Night (1984), and King Lear (1988) by Lighthouse (now the State Theatre Company of South Australia).
He performed as Jack Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest by the Melbourne Theatre Company in 1988, touring Victoria. In 1990–1991 and 1992, he took on the role again for a different production. Moreover, Rush won praise for his performances in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Oleanna and the Belvoir Street Theatre’s 1989 production of Diary of a Madman, based on a Nikolai Gogol short story (1993).
Rush became well-known because he portrayed brilliant musician David Helfgott in the 1996 film Shine, for which he received the Oscar Award for best actor. Rush then described spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham in Elizabeth (1998) and Inspector Javert in Les Misérables (1998); the latter role he reprised in the 2007 follow-up. Rush’s sly depiction of the Marquis de Sade in Quills (1998) as theatrical manager Philip Henslowe and as a supervillain in the comedy Mystery Men put his comic skills on the whole show (2000).
Rush gained even more recognition and reputation for his outrageous depiction of the pirate captain Hector Barbossa in the popular Pirates of the Caribbean movies Dead Man’s Chest (2006), At World’s End (2007), On Stranger Tides (2011), and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). He continued to show up on stage in the meanwhile. He made his Broadway debut in the play Exit the King in 2009, and for his performance there, he won the Tony Award for an outstanding actor that year.
The following year, he received an Academy Award nomination for best-supporting actor for his performance as King George VI’s speech therapist in the major motion picture The King’s Speech. He received plaudits for his subtle depiction of a German father who houses a Jewish refugee and an abandoned daughter during World War Two in the 2013 film The Book Thief. Rush portrayed Albert Einstein in the first season of the television series Genius. He also appeared in the 2016 action-fantasy Gods of Egypt.
He then appeared in another part as Alberto Giacometti in the 2017 movie Last Picture, which focused on the artist’s period in 1964 when he was creating a portrait of his friend and art critic James Lord. For the first time, Rush was accused of sexually assaulting a female costar in 2017, according to the British publication The Daily Telegraph. Rush fiercely denied the accusations and sued the magazine’s owner for defamation.
Following a protracted legal struggle, the court said the pieces were “a highly reckless piece of sensationalist journalism of the very worst type,” and he ultimately won in 2019. A defamation settlement for Rush exceeded $2 million (U.S.), which was a record at the time in Australia. In addition to the Oscar, Rush received several honors. His nomination as Australia’s Best Sporting Citizen in 2012 is noteworthy. Every year, the greatest in American theater is honored with the Tony Awards. The Antoinette Perry Awards were established by the American Theatre Wing in 1947 to recognize outstanding Broadway plays and musicals. The actress and producer are honored with award names.
The criteria for some of these awards include best play, best musical, and best revival. In contrast, others are granted in performing arts, directing, music, choreography, set design, costumes, and set design. The winners of the Tony Awards for best musical and best play are shown in the table below.
A section of Los Angeles, California, in the United States that goes by the names Hollywood or Tinseltown due to its connection to the movie business in the country. It is located northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Its borders are Beverly Boulevard on the south, Hyperion Avenue and Riverside Drive on the east, and the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains on the north (west). Since the early 1900s, when they found in southern California a perfect mix of mild temperature, an abundance of sunlight, diverse scenery, and an ample labor market, filmmakers have come to connect Hollywood with the creation of tinseled movie illusions.
The first home in Hollywood erected in 1853 that came to be known as Hollywoodland was an adobe building close to Los Angeles, which was a tiny city in the new state of California. Harvey Wilcox, a Kansas prohibitionist with a vision for a metropolis based on his sober Christian principles, created a real-estate subdivision plan of Hollywood in 1887. H.J. Whitley, a real estate tycoon known as the “Father of Hollywood,” transformed Hollywood into an upscale residential area.
Around the beginning of the 20th century, Whitley installed telephone, electric, and gas lines in the new suburb. Hollywood’s dearth of water resources prompted a vote in 1910 to combine Hollywood with Los Angeles. One of the first narrative movies was finished in Hollywood in 1908, a year after The Count of Monte Cristo’s filming in Chicago had been underway. With the establishment of Hollywood’s first studio on Sunset Boulevard in 1911, some 20 film production companies relocated to the area. Jesse Lasky, Arthur Freed, Samuel Goldwyn, and Cecil B. DeMille established the Jesse Lasky Feature Play Company in 1913. (later Paramount Pictures).
Cecil B. DeMille produced The Squaw Man in a barn between Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, and it became a huge box office success. Because of the inflow of East Coast independent filmmakers, Hollywood had eclipsed New York City by 1915 as the nation’s film industry hub. Several individuals, including D.W. Griffith, Metro-Goldwyn Mayer, William Fox, Adolph Zukor, and Louis B.
From the beginning of silent cinema to introducing “talkies,” Mayer oversaw the major motion picture studios for over three decades, including Twentieth Century Fox, MGM, Paramount, Columbia, and Warner Brothers. Writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Aldous Huxley, Evelyn Waugh, and Nathanael West were enthralled by Hollywood’s “golden age,” among others.
During World War II, when film companies started to migrate outside of Hollywood, many of Hollywood’s renowned lots and sound stages were vacant or given to producers of television shows. Hollywood became the hub of American network television entertainment in the early 1960s once it started adjusting to the television business’s growth. Hollywood also has the Hollywood Bowl (1919), the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park (also used for concerts), Mann’s (previously Grauman’s) Chinese Theatre, and the Hollywood Wax Museum. Built-in 1919, the Hollywood Bowl has hosted summertime performances beneath the stars since 1922. (with several wax replicas of famous people).
A broad spectrum of notable entertainment industry members is honored on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. The most iconic landmark in the area is the Hollywood Sign, which towers above the neighborhood. The sign’s original name was “Hollywoodland,” and it was built in 1923 (a new sign was put up in 1978). (to advertise new residences being developed nearby). Nevertheless, the sign deteriorated, and during a 1940s renovation, the “land” part was taken out.
Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power, and many more famous people who lived or passed away close by in Beverly Hills and Bel Air are all buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. With the death of the old Hollywood studio, Hollywood Boulevard, once a chic avenue, lost its appeal. Yet in the latter half of the 20th century, the region started to recover. The 1922-built Egyptian Theatre underwent a complete restoration in the 1990s and is currently home to the American Cinematheque, a charity devoted to film exhibition.
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet inspired Shakespeare in Love, an American-British romantic comedy that debuted in 1998. The movie received the Golden Globe for best comedy or Musical in addition to the Academy and BAFTA awards for best picture for its satirical depiction of theater life and its investigation of both known and unknowable facts concerning Shakespeare’s life and times.
Philip Henslowe, the owner of the Rose Theatre, is portrayed by Geoffrey Rush. Hugh Fennyman is harassing him because he owes him money (Tom Wilkinson). Henslowe persuades Fennyman that the new comedy by Will Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes), Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter, would make enough money for him and his family to pay off the debt. Shakespeare now suffers from writer’s block, regrettably preventing him from creating anything. Shakespeare then borrows story ideas from Christopher Marlowe, a different dramatist (Rupert Everett in an uncredited role).
Henslowe arranges auditions as he believes the play will be done shortly. Actor Thomas Kent exits the theater after making an impression on Shakespeare during his audition for the part of Romeo. Shakespeare chases him to Viola De Lesseps’ (Gwyneth Paltrow) home, unaware that he is a young noblewoman. The nurse of Viola, Imelda Staunton, receives a letter from Shakespeare informing Kent that he has been cast. As Lord Wessex (Colin Firth) discovers the apparent connection between Shakespeare and Viola, he threatens Shakespeare, who responds by identifying himself as Christopher Marlowe and flees the party.
As Joe Roberts’ character John Webster arrives for the Ethel audition, he is informed that arrogant actor Ned Alleyn has been chosen instead of him (Ben Affleck). Shakespeare learns during a rehearsal that actor Kent, who is playing Romeo, is Viola. While he works on the play that would become Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare falls in love with Viola. After that, Viola is called into the presence of Queen Elizabeth (Dame Judi Dench), who recognizes her as a fellow theater enthusiast.
Despite this, Webster observes them and alerts Simon Callow’s Tilney, the Master of the Revels, that one of his performers is a woman (which is illegal). As a consequence, Tilney closes the Rose Theatre and puts an end to Viola and Shakespeare’s romance. The performers mourn the loss of the play and their jobs when Richard Burbage (Martin Clunes), the proprietor of the competing Curtain Theatre, decides to stage it. Actor Shakespeare is now rehearsing Romeo in anticipation of the play’s debut on Viola’s wedding day. After the wedding, Viola gets assistance from her nurse to slip out to the theater to attend a space.
The actor initially chosen to portray Juliet must be replaced by Viola due to a vocal change associated with puberty. During the course of the production, Wessex appears. Yet because of the play’s success and popularity, Master Tilney arrives to detain the cast and crew. As Juliet, Thomas Kent is revealed to be Queen Elizabeth, who has been watching from the crowd the whole time. Once Viola and Wessex depart for Wessex’s plantation in America, Shakespeare starts writing a new play called Twelfth Night.
