Hardwell Biography and Career:

Hardwell, whose given name is Robbert van de Corput and who was born in Breda on January 7, 1988, is a DJ and music producer from the Netherlands. His professional name is Hardwell. In 2013 and 2014, readers of DJ Mag ranked him as the best DJ in the world, making him the clear winner in both years.  In 2022, DJ Mag’s annual survey of the top 100 DJs placed him at position number 43.  His performances at music festivals, such as Ultra Music Festival, Sunburn, and Tomorrowland, are mostly responsible for his widespread recognition. 2009 was the first year his “Show Me Love vs. Be” bootleg brought him widespread attention. In 2010, he established the recordRevealed Recordings, and the following year, in 2011, he launched the radio show and podcast Hardwell On Air.

Through his own record label, he has distributed a total of ten compilation CDs in addition to two documentaries. United We Are, his first album to be recorded in a studio, was released on January 23, 2015.  On September 7, 2018, he announced that he would be taking a break from touring indefinitely. He stated that he wanted to concentrate more on his personal life. On March 27, 2022, he made his comeback to the electronic dance music scene by performing his new album, Rebels Never Die, at the end of Ultra Miami’s mainstage. His father came up with the idea for the pseudonym and translated his family name into Latin and English.

The “Cor” part of the name means “heart,” and the “Put” part means “well.” However, in order to make it sound more enticing, he substituted the word “hard” for “heart.”  Robbert van de Corput was born in Breda, to Anneke and Cor van de Corput. Beginning when he was just four years old, he studied music in a music school and took piano lessons.  While also working as a hip-hop DJ, he began producing his first tracks in the electro genre when he was just twelve years old.  Because he took part in a number of different competitions, he quickly rose to prominence in Breda’s DJ scene. Tiesto, a famous DJ, and producer who hails from Breda, was a significant inspiration for him.

As the hip-hop community descended into the shadows, Hardwell moved his sound toward the mainstream electronic dance music industry. He started making remixes and uploading them to various websites on the internet as they were completed. In 2002, the Dutch producer duo Klubbheads approached him about signing a deal with the Digidance record label. At the time, he was only 14 years old. After another three weeks had passed, he issued his first official release, a two-disc album titled “Bubbling Beats 1,” after which he embarked on a tour of the Netherlands and made appearances at various nightclubs.

In 2006, he released his first official single, titled “Play It Around,” which was afterward played in clubs around Germany. The single showcased his personal approach in addition to various well-known musical subgenres and styles. The song “Never Knew Love,” made as a collaboration between Hardwell and Great ski and released at the tail end of 2007, was successful enough to place on the official German single charts. In 2008, remixes of Gregor Salto and Chuckie’s “Toys Are” together with Dutch DJ and producer R3hab, as well as a mix of Sidney Samson and Skitzofrenix’s “You Do Not Love Me,” remained at the top of the dance charts for several weeks. Additionally, in the year 2008, he was the one who made a mash-up of the songs “Show Me Love” by Robin S. and “Be” by Steve Angello and Laidback Luke.

The bootleg that was released by Hardwell and titled “Show Me Love” was supported and performed by a variety of DJs, including Laidback Luke and Steve Angello. The two producers debuted their rendition of “Show Me Love” as an official cover version on the market in December of 2008. On the single was a brand new remix that Hardwell had done. Hardwell launched his own record label in 2010, calling it Revealed Recordings (or Revealed for short), to publish electronic dance music created by up-and-coming artists.  He signed contracts with various electronic dance music (EDM) musicians, such as the pair W&W and his personal friends Dannic and Dyro. The collection known as “Hardwell Presents Revealed” is issued by Revealed on an annual basis. It includes songs that were previously released by the label in addition to new music produced by Hardwell.

On the occasion of Revealed’s fifth anniversary, a sampling compilation of the 100 songs that had received the most votes on their website was made available. The songs “Spaceman” by Hardwell, “Burn” by KSHMR and DallasK, and “Left Behind” by Paris Blohm and Taylor Renee finished in first, second, and third place, respectively.  In 2011, he acquired a record deal with the German label Kontor Records, enabling the label to distribute his recordings to a wider audience. Hardwell released the first episode of his own podcast, titled “Hardwell On Air,” in March 2011, which featured a collection of tracks by a variety of artists and lasted for one hour. The podcast can be heard on a variety of radio stations throughout the world, including Slam! in the Netherlands and Sirius XM in the United States.

During the same year, Hardwell and Tiesto worked together to create the single “Zero 76,” given its name after the area code for their hometown of Breda, “076.” The follow-up single “Cobra” by Hardwell debuted at number one on the singles chart in the Netherlands. The song was selected as the official theme song for the Energy festival, which helped it climb to the top of the charts on Beatport. The next single, “Encoded,” had a comparable amount of success and was chosen to serve as the opening music for his podcast.  In 2011, DJ Mag included Hardwell on its list of the Top 100 DJs for the first time. He entered the list at position number 24, making him the second-highest new entry in the list, behind only Skrillex. In 2012, he was nominated Best Break-Through DJ at the International Dance Music Awards.

The song “Spaceman” was available for download on July 31st, 2012. It racked up over half a million sales in the United States and was heavily featured in various nightclubs and music festivals in 2012. It is claimed to be a song that contributed significantly to developing the big room house genre. If a vocal version featuring Mitch Crown was released, it would likely chart on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs list in the United States and the Dutch Single Top 100. In the years that followed, many different song remixes were released, as well as a mash-up by Hardwell that featured a hardstyle remix of Blasterjaxx and W&W’s “Rocket.” Hardwell frequently utilized this mash-up as an outro song for his concerts.

Hardwell performed as the main act at several events, including Creamfields, Electric Zoo Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, Ultra Music Festival, and Nature One.  Additionally, he performed at Tomorrowland 2012 and published a video connecting the event that was viewed tens of millions of times. Hardwell climbed to the sixth spot on the DJ Mag Top 100 in the fall of 2012. I Am Hardwell is a documentary released in January 2014 and chronicles the tale of Hardwell’s career while documenting his most triumphant moments. During filming the documentary, he spent over two and a half years traveling alongside the filmmaker, Robin Pierre. When he was 16 years old, he dreamed of becoming the number one DJ in the world.

This experience inspired him to make the phrase “If you can dream it, you can do it” his life’s slogan. Separately from the film itself, a soundtrack album was made available. The song “Eclipse,” played at the beginning of most of his live sets since November 2013, was the initial product of his labor. The demands that the ID track is made public have been a running farce among his admirers, and the tune has been given the unofficial label “Titan” by his supporters. During an interview with DJ Mag, Hardwell committed to publishing his album in 2014. Hardwell debuted several tunes from the upcoming album during the 2014 Ultra Music Festival and Tomorrowland editions.  At Tomorrowland in 2014, Hardwell and Tiesto played a back-to-back set, which has gained more than 6 million views on YouTube as of January 2021, and announced their most recent collaboration during that performance. On one of the tracks, vocals were provided by Matthew Koma.  After that, Hardwell focused all of his attention on finishing his album.
