Harvey Keitel is a well-known American actor who was born on May 13, 1939. He is well known for his portrayal of “tough guy” characters as well as characters with questionable morality. He came to prominence during the New Hollywood movement, and he has maintained a long-running association with the director Martin Scorsese, starring in six of his films: Who’s That Knocking at My Door (1967), Mean Streets (1973), Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), Taxi Driver (1976), and The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) in addition to The Irishman (2019).

Because of his performance as Mickey Cohen in the film Bugsy (1991), Keitel was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor. It was for his performance in The Piano (1993) that he was awarded the AACTA trophy for Best Actor in a Leading Role. The movies Blue Collar (1978), Thelma & Louise (1991), Reservoir Dogs (1992), Bad Lieutenant (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), and Holy Smoke! His mother, Miriam (née Klein; 1911–1987), was Romanian, while his father, Harry Keitel, was Polish. Both of his parents were immigrants. His mother and father were proprietors of a lunch counter, and his father was also self-employed as a milliner. He spent his childhood in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brighton Beach with his older sister Renee and older brother Jerry.

He received his high school education from Abraham Lincoln. At the age of 17, he signed up to serve in the Marine Corps. Following his discharge from the military, he worked as a court stenographer for ten to twelve years before beginning a career in acting. Keitel attended classes taught by Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg, as well as classes held at the HB Studio  Eventually, he was cast in roles in some off-Broadway companies. During this time, Keitel auditioned for the director Martin Scorsese and was offered a starring role as “J.R.” in Scorsese’s debut feature film, Who’s That Knocking at My Door (1967). Keitel went on to play the role throughout the rest of the film’s production. Since that time, Scorsese and Keitel have collaborated on a number of films and television shows.

In the film directed by Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel played the leading character. Mean Streets was also De Niro’s first major cinematic role. In the years 1977 and 1978, Keitel starred in the first films that were directed by Paul Schrader, Ridley Scott, and James Toback. Schrader’s film, Blue Collar, co-starred Richard Pryor and Yaphet Kotto, and Scott’s film, The Duellists, co-starred Keith Carradine. Toback’s film, Fingers, featured Keitel in the role that he had originally written for Robert De Niro to play. Apocalypse Now, which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and released in 1979, gave him the role of Captain Willard. The first week of primary photography took place in the Philippines, and Keitel was there to participate. When asked about Keitel’s performance as Willard, Coppola expressed her dissatisfaction, noting that the actor “found it difficult to play him as a passive onlooker.”

After analyzing the film from the first week, director Francis Ford Coppola decided to replace Harvey Keitel with Martin Sheen, a casting session favorite. In the 1980s, Keitel continued to work in both the theatrical and film industries, frequently playing the typecast part of a violent criminal. After playing a corrupt police officer in the 1983 thriller Copkiller (which also starred singer John Lydon), Keitel took on a supporting part in the romantic drama Falling in Love (1984), which starred Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep. Keitel was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the latter film.

Between the years 1985 and 1988, he was one of the busiest character actors around, appearing in a total of 16 films and telefilms. This includes the mafia comedy Wise Guys (1986) directed by Brian De Palma and starring Danny DeVito and Joe Piscopo, as well as the controversial The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) directed by Martin Scorsese, in which he played the role of Judas. He appeared in the sequel to Chinatown titled The Two Jakes (1990), which was directed by Jack Nicholson. He shared the screen with Jack Nicholson.

In 1991, Ridley Scott chose Keitel to play the sympathetic policeman in Thelma & Louise. The following year, Keitel earned a role in Barry Levinson’s Bugsy, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Keitel has since gone on to collect other nominations and awards for his work. The next year, Keitel appeared in the Whoopi Goldberg-starring comedy Sister Act, which was a commercial triumph at the box office. Keitel played another mobster in the film.

In 1992, Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs featured Harvey Keitel in the starring role. Keitel also served as a co-producer on the film. Keitel’s performance in the film as “Mr. White” catapulted his career to a new level. Since then, Keitel has been selective about the roles he takes on in an effort to alter his reputation and demonstrate a greater acting range. One of those parts was playing the titular character in the film Bad Lieutenant, which was about a drug-addicted police lieutenant who was trying to rehabilitate himself. In 1993, he appeared as a co-star in the film The Piano, directed by Jane Campion.

The following year, he played Winston “The Wolf” Wolfe in Pulp Fiction, directed by Quentin Tarantino. This role was an apparent repetition of his role as Victor the Cleaner in 1993’s Point of No Return. Clockers is an adaptation of Richard Price’s novel that was directed by Spike Lee and co-produced by Martin Scorsese. Keitel played the role of a police detective in the film. In the crime drama From Dusk Till Dawn, which was directed by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez and released in 1996, Harvey Keitel played a pivotal role.

The following year, in 1997, he starred in the film Cop Land, which also featured Sylvester Stallone, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro. His other roles include the paternal Satan in the movie “Little Nicky,” a knowledgeable Navy man in “U-571,” a dedicated FBI Special Agent Sadusky in “National Treasure” and “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” and other similar characters. In 1999, Keitel was replaced by Sydney Pollack on the set of Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut owing to shooting issues. The same year, Keitel also participated in Tony Bui’s award-winning directorial debut, Three Seasons (which Keitel also executive produced), and he was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in the latter film. Holy Smoke!, which also starred Kate Winslet, marked Keitel’s second collaboration with director Jane Campion.

In the same year, 2001, Keitel played two very different characters in two different films: in Taking Sides, he was a U.S. Army denazification inspector, and in The Grey Zone, he was SS-Oberscharfuhrer Erich Muhsfeldt. At the 24th Moscow International Film Festival in 2002, Keitel was presented with the Stanislavsky Award in recognition of his exceptional achievements in the field of acting as well as his unwavering commitment to the tenets of Stanislavsky’s acting school. In addition, he made an appearance in ads for Steinlager Pure in New Zealand in the year 2007. Keitel has stripped down to his underwear in a number of movies, including Bad Lieutenant and The Piano, in which he appears completely naked.

In the first performance of Jerry Springer: The Opera, which took place at Carnegie Hall in New York City in January 2008, Keitel portrayed Jerry Springer. In 2008, Keitel was chosen to play the part of Detective Gene Hunt in the American version of the popular British time-travel police drama series Life on Mars, which was produced by ABC but only ran for a limited number of episodes. As a tribute to his roots in Brooklyn, he made a cameo appearance in the music video for Jay-Z’s song “D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)” in June of 2009. He had an appearance in the music video for Beyoncé’s song “Pretty Hurts” in the year 2013. A Farewell to Fools was an independent movie that he was in that was released in 2013.

As part of a television advertising campaign for the British insurance business Direct Line that cost forty million pounds, he performed the role of Winston Wolfe from the movie Pulp Fiction between the years of 2014 and early 2020. The Newport Beach Film Festival bestowed upon him their Lifetime Achievement Award the following year, 2021. Alongside Dichen Lachman, Willa Fitzgerald, and Ron Perlman, Keitel had a starring role in the 2022 version of Joe Baby, which was directed by Steven Brand. Recent projects that Keitel has worked on with director Wes Anderson include the films Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), and Isle of Dogs (2018), all of which feature Keitel in supporting roles.

After a gap of 30 years, he worked with Martin Scorsese again, this time playing the role of gangster Angelo Bruno in the crime movie The Irishman (2019), which also starred Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. In the most recent season of the Disney+ original series National Treasure: Edge of History (2022), he returned to the role of FBI Agent Peter Sadusky. After a contentious breakup in 1993, Keitel and the American actress Lorraine Bracco, with whom he had been in a long-term relationship from 1982 to 1993, fought bitterly over custody of their daughter Stella, who was born in 1985. The custody fight lasted for a long time. In the year 2001, he tied the knot with the Canadian actress Daphna Kastner.
