Jack Johnson Biography and Career:

Jack Hody Johnson was born on May 18, 1975, is a musician, composer, and filmmaker from the United States who used to compete professionally in surfing. Johnson is primarily recognized for his contributions to the genres of soft rock and acoustic pop music. After the publication of his first album, Brushfire Fairytales, in 2001, he was able to reach commercial success for the first time. Johnson’s albums Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George in 2006 Sleep Through the Static in 2008, To the Sea in 2010, and From Here to Now to You in 2013 have all debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Both in 2005 and again in 2013, his album “In Between Dreams” reached its highest position on the chart at number two. Johnson is very involved in environmental activism and sustainable practices, and he frequently focuses his attention on the oceans across the world. Both the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation and the Kua Hawaii Foundation were established by Johnson and his wife Kim. In the year 2008, Johnson accepted the notion of greening (reducing and reusing waste) and gave the Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation one hundred percent of the earnings from the Sleep Through the Static tour.

In a similar vein, the profits made from the To the Sea album tour in 2010 were donated to All at Once, which is a coalition of environmental nonprofits led by Johnson that encourages fan participation. Jack Johnson, the famous surfer Jeff Johnson’s son, was born and reared on the North Shore of Oahu, which is located in the state of Hawaii.  At the age of five, he got his first lesson in how to surf. On the North Shore of Oahu, he competed in the Pipeline Masters, widely considered to be the most prestigious event in the sport of surfing. At the age of 17, he became the youngest invitee to ever make it to the finals of this competition.

The following week, however, his career as a professional surfer came to an abrupt end when he was involved in a surfing accident at the Pipeline that required more than one hundred stitches in his forehead and the removal of a few of his teeth; this incident would later serve as the inspiration for the song “Drink the Water.”  In the year 1994, he made an appearance in The Endless Summer II playing the role of a surfer.

Jack Johnson received his high school diploma from Kahuku High School, which is located on the island of Oahu. After that, he would go on to study film studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from which he would graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1997. Although Johnson began playing the guitar at the age of 8 and writing songs at the age of 12, it was during his time as a college student playing rhythm guitar for the band Soil (that his passion for music truly blossomed.  Zach Gill’s band, Django Reinhardt, issued a CD in 1994 that soon became a favorite band of the Isla Vista party scene at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).

Gill and Johnson built a deep bond over the years, and finally became bandmates in later years. Gill’s band Django was a competitor of Soil, which was fronted by Jack Johnson.  When Johnson was playing with Soil at UCSB, he had the opportunity to open for bands like Sublime and Dave Matthews, which at the time were not as well known. Johnson cites Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Radiohead, Otis Redding, G. Love and Special Sauce, Ben Harper, Sublime, The Beatles, Bob Marley, Neil Young, and A Tribe Called Quest as his primary influences when it comes to songwriting. Jimi Hendrix is Johnson’s favorite guitarist of all time, according to Johnson. The song “Rodeo Clowns,” which Jack Johnson co-wrote and contributed vocals to, was included on G. Love’s album Philadelphonic, which was released in 1999.

This was Jack Johnson’s big break. The track would go on to become the album’s most successful single in the future. G. Love was first made aware of Johnson by a friend of Johnson’s who, at the time, was working alongside Johnson in the production of surf films. After listening to “Rodeo Clowns,” G. Love recognized Johnson’s talent and was impressed by the seamless manner he possessed, so he encouraged Johnson to record with him. This ultimately resulted in the recording of the now-famous “Rodeo Clowns,” which launched Johnson’s career.  Johnson is not only a successful artist, but he is also a director who has achieved a lot of success in his career.

Thicker Than Water (2000) and The September Sessions (2002) were both surf movies that Johnson directed, and he also starred in both of them. Both of the soundtracks of the movies were composed and produced by Johnson. In addition, Johnson had a role in the surf movie A Brokedown Melody, which was released in 2004. Suela distributed a four-track demo that attracted the attention of J. P. Plunier, the producer for Ben Harper. Plunier collaborated with Johnson to produce Brushfire Fairytales, Johnson’s debut album, during the month of December 2000. On the album, Harper and his Weissenborn lap steel guitar made a guest appearance.

Brushfire Fairytales was released on February 1, 2001, and as a result, Johnson was given the opportunity to serve as the opening act for Ben Harper’s “Innocent Criminals” tour of the United States in late February 2001. This tour included twenty-three locations across the United States. In order to record his second full-length album, On and On, Johnson went back into the studio with Adam Topol (drums, percussion), Merlo Podlewski (bass), and Mario Caldato Jr., who had previously worked on Brushfire Fairytales. Mario Caldato Jr. was in charge of producing the album. It was the first album to be recorded in Johnson’s Mango Tree Studio in Johnson’s hometown of North Shore, Oahu, and it was the first album to be released through The Moonshine Conspiracy Records.

Both of these accomplishments occurred simultaneously. On and On was made available to the public on May 6th, 2003. Brushfire Records was formerly known as The Moonshine Conspiracy Records; however, the name of the company was later changed to Brushfire Records. Johnson transformed the offices and studios of his record company, which was based in Los Angeles, into an example of environmentally responsible business practices by installing solar power, recyclable CD packaging, and power-saving air conditioners.

On the episode of Saturday Night Live that aired on April 3, 2004, Johnson and Ben Harper played a performance alongside Toots and the Maytals (season 29, episode 16). In October of 2004, Johnson went back to the Mango Tree Studio to record the follow-up album to 2003’s On and On. He was joined at the studio by Topol and Podlewski, as well as Zach Gill (of Animal Liberation Orchestra), who played accordion, melodica, and piano. On March 1, 2005, In Between Dreams was made available to the public. Johnson’s album of musical accompaniment, titled Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George, was made available to the public on February 7, 2006. Ben Harper, G. Love, Merlo Podlewski, and Zach Gill are some of the other artists featured on the album.

It was the first soundtrack to top the Billboard 200 since the Bad Boys II album did so in August of 2003, and it was the first soundtrack for an animated film to do so since the Pocahontas soundtrack did so in July of 1995. Sleep Through the Static is Johnson’s fourth full-length studio album, and it was produced by J.P. Plunier with Johnson’s assistance. The Solar-Powered Plastic Plant in Los Angeles, California served as the location for the recording, which was powered entirely by the sun. Topol, Podlewski, and Gill all contributed to the record in various instrumental capacities (drums, percussion). After the initial release of Sleep Through the Static on February 1, 2008, the band went on the road all over the world. Johnson was the driving force behind the Kua Festivals (2004–2008 and 2010). The Kkua Hawai’i Foundation is a philanthropic organization that supports environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaii.

These six years of festivals generated support for the foundation, which often occurred around Earth Day. The festivals lasted for a total of six years. The early Kkua Festivals were featured on the DVD Kkua Festival 2004/2005, which was produced by Jack Johnson Music and published in 2004/2005. In addition, he was a participant in the documentary titled Kkua 2008: 5 Years of Change (2009), which was produced by Brushfire and Three Foot Giant Productions and broadcast on Sundance Channel. Other participants in the film included Willie Nelson, Jackson Browne, Dave Matthews, Eddie Vedder, and others.

It was on April 17, 2012, just prior to his tour of the Hawaiian Islands 2012, that he released the live Kkua Festival collection titled Best of Kkua Festival. The fifth studio album from Animal Liberation Orchestra, titled Man of the World, was released on February 9, 2010, with Johnson serving as the album’s producer. Additionally, Johnson contributes his vocals to the CD. On February 1, 2010, Johnson revealed on his official website that his fifth studio album, titled To the Sea, was now being recorded at the Mango Tree Studio, with a worldwide release scheduled for the first week of June 2010.  In addition, the website revealed that there will be an accompanying tour in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand to coincide with the release of the album at midnight on May 31.
