Jim Nantz Biography and Career:

Jim William Nantz III is an American sportscaster born on May 17, 1959. Since the 1980s, he has worked for CBS Sports, covering telecasts of the National Football League, NCAA Division men’s basketball, the NBA, and the PGA Tour. His full name is James William Nantz III. Since 1989, he has served as the primary anchor for CBS’s coverage of the Masters Tournament, and since 2004, he has been the primary play-by-play announcer for CBS’s coverage of the NFL.

In addition, between 1990 and 2023, he served as the primary broadcaster for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Nantz began his career with CBS Sports in 1985, initially working as a studio host for the network’s college football and basketball coverage. He also worked as an on-course reporter for PGA Tour golf and called NFL games on Westwood One. From 1988 until 1990, when he was moved to television, Nantz called Sunday Night Football games for what was then known as CBS Radio Sports.

Since 1989, Nantz has served as the main anchor for CBS’s coverage of the Masters Tournament. After Brent Musburger was fired from CBS in 1990, Jim Nantz moved into the lead play-by-play job on the NCAA Final Four men’s basketball finals. He worked alongside Billy Packer, Clark Kellogg, Steve Kerr, and Greg Anthony in this capacity. Bill Raftery and Grant Hill were the commentators Nantz most recently worked with to cover the March Madness tournament.

In October of 2022, Nantz made public his plan to retire from basketball coverage to devote more time to spending time with his family. Ian Eagle will succeed him. As part of the recent shifts to the long-running game show to use product placement models and CBS crossovers, including sports packages, Nantz has appeared on episodes of The Price Is Right to present a Showcase prize that involves CBS Sports properties.

In 2009, he was presented a prize to attend the Final Four in Detroit; in 2010, he gave a tip to attend Super Bowl XLIV. Nantz played the role of himself in the film Tin Cup, which was released in 1996. He has also had guest appearances in episodes of many television programs, such as Arliss, Yes, Dear, Criminal Minds, and How Met Your Mother. In the short-lived series Clubhouse, he had a recurring role as the play-by-play announcer for a made-up baseball team, and his voice can be heard in the film Scrapple from 1998. Additionally, he played in the film Fantasy Football, produced by CBS’s sibling network, Nickelodeon.

Since 2009, Nantz has served as a guest commentator for the BBC during the final round of The Open Championship. Alongside Gary McCord, Jim Nantz provided substantial commentary for the golf video game Jack Nicklaus 6: Golden Bear Challenge, released for personal computers in 1999. Nantz’s writing is also in the Golden Tee Golf arcade game series. Phil Simms and Jim Nantz were the commentators for the Madden NFL games from 2012 to 2016 when Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis replaced them. During that time, Jim Nantz was the analyst for the series. In 2013, Nantz was featured in an advertisement for Papa John’s Pizza alongside the quarterback of the Denver Broncos, Peyton Manning, and the company’s creator, John Schnatter. In addition to that, he has appeared in an advertisement for Capital One’s March Madness promotion alongside Charles Barkley, Samuel L. Jackson, and Spike Lee.

“Hello, friends” can be heard at the beginning of each broadcast Nantz hosts. Nantz’s father, who had Alzheimer’s disease, struggled to recognize his son, so he came up with the greeting to introduce himself to his ailing father. After hosting the pre-game show The NFL Today for CBS from 1998 to 2003, he was promoted to lead play-by-play commentator for The NFL on CBS the following year. Because of this transfer, Greg Gumbel was reassigned to the studio, and Jim Nantz was moved to the stadium booth to work alongside Phil Simms.

As with Tim Brant, Jim Nantz worked with NFL commentator Hank Stram for the 1991 and 1992 seasons of the league’s broadcasts. Previously, in 1993, he had stood in for his predecessor, Greg Gumbel, as the presenter of NFL Today while Gumbel was away covering the American League Championship Series for CBS. Gumbel was the host of NFL Today before him. Most of the 1993 season was spent with Verne Lundquist and Dan Fouts holding the #2 spot in the rankings. The second-round playoff game between Dallas and Green Bay, which Pat Summerall and John Madden were not assigned to do, would instead be called by CBS’s Jim Nantz and Randy Cross. On the other hand, Tim Ryan and Matt Millen spent most of the 1993 season ranked third overall.

The play-by-play of Super Bowl XLI, which took place on February 4, 2007, was called by Nantz. Only three other play-by-play broadcasters in history—Curt Gowdy, Kevin Harlan, and Dick Enberg—have ever called both the Super Bowl and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Game. He now joins that exclusive club. Brent Musburger is the only other man except Jim Nantz to have hosted coverage of The Masters from Butler Cabin, an NCAA individuals’s Basketball Championship game, and a Super Bowl. Nantz is one of just two individuals to have done all three. Musburger was able to attain all three of his goals while working for CBS. During the Vince Lombardi Trophy presentation at Super Bowl XLVII, Joe Flacco accidentally smacked Jim Nantz with the trophy, but Nantz didn’t even bat an eye when it happened.

As part of a partnership agreement with CBS and the NFL Network, Nantz and his broadcasting colleague Phil Simms called Thursday Night Football games in 2014. Sideline reporter for CBS broadcasts of both Thursday and Sunday games was Tracy Wolfson, who also covered the games on Sunday. Tony Romo, a former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, took over for Phil Simms as Jim Nantz’s color commentator for National Football League games on CBS in 2017.

Both the Super Bowl LIII in 2019 and the Super Bowl LV in 2021 were called by Nantz and Romo. Tom McCarthy filled in for Jim Nantz for the broadcast of the 18th game of the NFL season, played between the Carolina Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on January 9, 2022. Due to COVID guidelines, Nantz was had to miss the last week of the regular season, much like Romo was required to do the previous year. Throughout a tournament, it is common for Jim Nantz to share various historical facts, statistics, and anecdotes concerning various athletes and circumstances with viewers and listeners.
