Additionally, he served as the Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom from 2015 to 2020. Before his current position, McDonnell was a member of the Labour Party and held the positions of Deputy Leader of the Greater London Council and Member of the Greater London Council for Hayes and Harlington.
During his time in parliament, he served as the chairperson of the Labour Representation Committee, the Public Services Not Private Profit group, and the Socialist Campaign Group. Gordon Brown beat him in the leadership election for the Labour Party in 2007, which took place after Tony Blair resigned from his position. MacDonnell is a prominent figure on the left wing of the party, and he also serves as the parliamentary convenor of the Trade Union Co-ordinating Group, which is comprised of eight trade unions that are on the left.
Following his election as leader of the Labour Party in 2015, Jeremy Corbyn appointed John McDonnell to the position of Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer within his Shadow Cabinet. During the time that he served as Shadow Chancellor, McDonnell was the driving force behind the creation of Labour’s new economic policy and committed to boosting expenditure on research and infrastructure.
John Martin McDonnell was born on September 8, 1951, in Liverpool, England, into an Irish Catholic family. His father, Bob, was a docker, and his mother, Elsie, was a cleaner. John Martin McDonnell was the son of Bob and Elsie. On the occasion of the Second World War, McDonnell’s father was a member of the Sherwood Foresters and held the rank of sergeant.
When his father was having trouble finding employment at the docks, his family relocated to Great Yarmouth, which is located in Norfolk. Great Yarmouth is the hometown of his mother, and it was there that his father began working as a bus driver. When McDonnell’s mother was working at the British Home Stores, the latter also held the position of branch secretary for the Transport and General Workers’ Union.
The Great Yarmouth Grammar School was where McDonnell received his education. Initially, he began his studies to become a priest in the Catholic Church. Later, when he was perhaps 15 or 16 years old, he changed his mind about attending St. Joseph’s College, a Roman Catholic boarding school in Ipswich, Suffolk, although he had already secured a grant from the local council to attend the school.
While attending grammar school, where he was unsuccessful in his attempts to pass his A-levels, he worked part-time jobs in pubs and a bingo hall. Following his first marriage, he took a break from his studies and worked several jobs that required little to no ability before returning to his studies at Burnley Technical College, where he attended night classes for his A-level. When he was 23 years old, he relocated to Hayes and enrolled at Brunel University, where he eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in government and politics.
While he was attending the university, he aided his wife in running a small children’s home in Hayes. In addition, he continued to be actively engaged with his local community and the National Union of Public Employees, which is a trade union in the United Kingdom. After completing his undergraduate studies, he went on to receive a master’s degree in sociology and politics from Birkbeck University of London.
Between the years 1977 and 1978, John McDonnell labored for the National Union of Mineworkers as a researcher and official. His association with the Trades Union Congress continued until 1982, following which he left the organization. In the meanwhile, John McDonnell came into office as a member of the Greater London Council for Hayes and Harlington on May 7, 1981. He remained in that post until March 31, 1986.
While McDonnell was serving in this capacity, Ken Livingstone, the Leader of the Greater London Council, promoted him to the position of crucial chair of finance. Livingstone appointed McDonnell to the position of Deputy Leader of the Greater London Council on May 7, 1984. The latter, on the other hand, fired McDonnell in 1985 due to the tactic of opposing rate-capping.
Following the dissolution of the Greater London Council in 1986, John McDonnell was appointed to the position of head of the policy section of the Camden London Borough Council. He was appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Association of London Authorities the following year. After serving in that capacity until 1995, he went on to succeed him as Chief Executive Officer of the Association of London Government, a post he held until 1997.
During this time, he attempted to run for office both in the general election of 1983 from Hampstead and Highgate and in the general election of 1992 from Hayes and Harlington, but both of his attempts were unsuccessful. During the general election that took place in 1997, he ran for a seat representing Hayes and Harlington once again, and he was successful in gaining election as a Member of Parliament for Hayes and Harlington.
His victory in the ensuing elections in 2001, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2017, and 2019 has allowed him to maintain his position as the incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency, which he has held since May 1, 1997. Following his election as Mayor of London in the year 2000, Livingstone appointed McDonnell to his cabinet and gave him the job of overseeing the administration of local government in London.
