Jonathan Van Ness is an American hairdresser, podcaster, and television personality. He is most known for his role as the grooming expert on the relaunched version of the Netflix series Queer Eye, in which he co-stars with Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown, and Bobby Berk. Van Ness does not identify as either a man or a woman and is openly homosexual. Earlier in his career, he had achieved success with his online parody series, Gay of Thrones, which was modeled after the very successful HBO series Game of Thrones.

He is the presenter of the podcast Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, and more recently, he contributed his voice to the original series Heads Will Roll that Audible produced. He made his debut as a writer with the release of his book titled Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love. During an interview, he disclosed that he is HIV + to combat the societal stigma associated with the condition. In addition to being quite loud about politics, he is also very vocal about the rights of the LGBTQ community.

After gaining experience as a hairdresser while working for Sally Hershberger, he created his own studio and is now the proprietor of MoJoHair and Stile Salon in the city of Los Angeles. On March 28, 1987, in Quincy, Illinois, United States, Jonathan Van Ness was born to Mary Winters, who worked as the vice president of Quincy Media, and Jon Van Ness, who was employed in sales at the time of Jonathan’s birth. His mother is a member of the Oakley family, who, since the 1890s, has owned the broadcasting and newspaper company Quincy Media. She is a member of the family’s fifth generation.

His parents divorced when he was just five years old, and four years later, his mother married the man she had been in love with since she was a youngster. He is the youngest of her mother’s four children from her first and second marriages. While he was growing up, he suffered from being bullied and even received death threats, but he never felt frightened to embrace his femininity because of the unwavering love he had for his mother, whom he regarded as his greatest friend for the rest of his life. He often dressed up like a “baby queen,” putting on “every nail polish, every heel, and every scarf.” Despite this, he had swiftly learned to play dress up with his Barbie dolls “behind closed doors.” As a Quincy Senior High School student, he defied social conventions by becoming the school’s first male cheerleader. In addition to taking swimming courses and violin lessons, he participated in school talent shows by doing gymnastics and ballet.

After having a sexual encounter with a closeted youngster from his swim class and then being sexually molested by an older guy at church, he started to exhibit self-destructive behaviors, and this caused him to feel ashamed. As a young teenager, he often spent numerous hours in AOL chat rooms trying to meet new people. Sometimes, he would even give sex to much older guys than himself. Because he was so anxious to leave his hometown, he worked hard throughout his junior year of high school to acquire more credits. This allowed him to bypass his final year of high school and enroll immediately in college. He was awarded a scholarship for cheering at the University of Arizona, where he planned to spend a semester studying political science. However, he disregarded his studies in favor of watching television and squandered his stipend on cocaine.

After being thrown off the cheering team, he signed up for another semester, only to drop out of school at the last minute to become a hairdresser. He then returned to selling his sexual services in exchange for money. After graduating, he decided to study at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis. However, his parents would not fund the tuition, so he was forced to take out a loan from the Federal Student Aid Program (FAFSA) and work at Sun Places Tanning Solutions.

When Jonathan Van Ness was 15 years old, he got his first work, instructing children in gymnastics at a summer camp at the community college in his hometown. He continued to perform this job for the next several summers after that. Even though he was the only brother who did not join the family company, his second job was to work in the circulation department of the family newspaper, where he was responsible for resolving consumer complaints and subscriptions. In 2005 and 2006, he worked as a hairdresser at Aveda and earned the majority of his pocket money from tips. However, he finally relocated to Arizona without finishing his training and worked as a hairdresser in Phoenix and Scottsdale for a total of five years. In 2009, he made the impulsive decision to go to Los Angeles without any preparations. He got employment as an assistant at Sally Hershberger, but the money was inadequate, so he spent most weekends in Arizona.

In 2012, he was working in a salon when he abruptly passed out while applying highlights to a customer’s hair. The following day, after feeling flu-like symptoms, he went to Planned Parenthood to be tested, and the results showed that he was HIV positive. He decided to “get clean” from his drug usage and, at the same time, began a new chapter in his professional life by “co-founding” the hair business MoJoHair with Monique Northrop in November 2013. The funding for this new endeavor came from a family trust. In 2013, when Jonathan Van Ness was styling the hair of his friend Erin Gibson, a director for the comedy syndicate Funny or Die, he casually performed a high-energy review of Game of Thrones. Erin Gibson was listening intently to every word.

Because she enjoyed it so much, she decided to propose the concept, which led to the creation of the online series Gay of Thrones, which is a spoof recap series of the popular HBO program and debuted in April 2013. The initial series was done only for fun, and he was not compensated for his work. However, as the series gained popularity, they continued the program for a total of five further seasons until the original series came to an end. Because of his work on the online series, he was considered for a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award in 2018 for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series.

Because of the series’s popularity, he took advantage of additional chances, such as landing Margaret Cho, one of his favorite comedians, as a client and styling her hair for two years on Fashion Police. In addition to that, he was a series regular on I Love the 2000s (2014). In 2015, he presented the weekly podcast Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, even though the show didn’t become famous until much later. He excitedly tried out for the reincarnation of Queer Eye that was shown on Netflix. He was selected to be the new grooming expert, making him one of the Fab Five along with Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown, and Bobby Berk. Upon its first release in February of 2018, the series was held up to favorable comparisons to its predecessor, and it has since been running successfully for five seasons. Throughout his career, he has been featured as a special guest on several different television programs and podcasts, in addition to making cameos in music videos for artists such as Kesha and Taylor Swift.

In the year 2020, he had a cameo as himself in the documentary film Miss Americana, which was about the life of Taylor Swift. He also had a co-starring role in the Audible original audio comedy ‘Heads Will Roll’ opposite Meryl Streep, Peter Dinklage, and Kate McKinnon. Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love was the title of Jonathan Van Ness’s book, which was released in October of 2019, and it detailed how the many events that occurred during his life molded him. In 2020, a children’s picture book named “Peanut Went for the Gold” was published, which told the story of a gender nonbinary guinea pig.

In 2012, Jonathan Van Ness lost his step-father to cancer, which made him more aware of healthcare problems. Later, in September 2019, it drove him to back Elizabeth Warren as a presidential contender. Van Ness’s stepfather had been a longtime advocate for universal healthcare. Psoriasis, a long-term skin disease, is one of his ailments, as he disclosed in a picture post on Instagram in March of 2018. Jonathan Van Ness was engaged to prepare the cast of Game of Thrones for Comic-Con while he was still shooting the first season of Game of Thrones. Even if it was nothing more than a lucky accident, he was taken aback by the fact that some of the show’s producers had seen his recaps and recognized him right away.

In 2013, Van Ness was styling the hair of his friend Erin Gibson, who was employed for the comedy website Funny or Die. Erin Gibson worked in the hair department. She requested that he do his review of an episode of “Game of Thrones,” which resulted in the birth of the “Gay of Thrones” online series, which is a humorous social commentary series that recaps the HBO drama. Van Ness was considered for a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Short Form Variety Series in both 2016 and 2018. This nomination was for the series.

Additionally, Van Ness hosts a podcast titled “Getting Curious,” which is a monthly investigation of current events, activism, and topics that he is interested in. Topics covered on the program range from the history of the Armenian Genocide to the opioid problem in the United States. The podcast was first released in 2015 but didn’t gain traction until the first episode of “Queer Eye” was broadcast.

Van Ness is currently starring in the grooming expert role on the Netflix relaunch series “Queer Eye.” He also appears with four other homosexual guys in the film, all of whom are attempting to change the lives of primarily heterosexual males. Early in 2018, the program’s first episode debuted, and it was met with acclaim from both viewers and critics. The second season premiered in the summer of 2018, not long after the conclusion of the first. In 2018, “Queer Eye” was honored with three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Structured Reality Program, Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program, and Outstanding Writing for a Reality Program.

Early in 2019, the third season of “Queer Eye” was made available on Netflix for streaming. Van Ness also published an encouraging and important memoir titled “Over the Top: A Raw Journey to Self-Love.” In this book, he discusses his experiences as a drug addict, a victim of sexual assault, and someone who lives with HIV. The book is titled “Over the Top.”
