Kenny Easley Biography and Career:

Kenneth Mason Easley Jr. is a retired strong safety who played in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons during the 1980s. He was born in the United States on January 15, 1959, and his football career ended in the decade of the 1980s. He was a three-time consensus All-American while playing college football for the UCLA Bruins and was a team member.

Easley was selected by the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL) in the first round of the 1981 NFL Draft, and he went on to play professionally for the team from 1981 until 1987. Easley, who earned the moniker “the Enforcer” during his tenure with the Seahawks, is widely regarded as one of the franchise’s all-time great players and one of the finest defensive backs of his period.

During the 1980s, Easley was considered one of the best defensive players in the National Football League (NFL) when he played for the Seahawks. In 1984, the Associated Press selected Easley as the Defensive Player of the Year for the National Football League. Throughout his career, he was chosen for All–Pro honors four times and was selected to play in the Pro Bowl five times. After the 1987 season, Easley’s career was cut short due to a severe renal condition he was diagnosed with.

Following his retirement, Easley owned a Cadillac dealership and, subsequently, the Norfolk Nighthawks AF2 team, which he ran from 1999 to 2003. His induction into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame occurred in 1998. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame the following year (2017).

He was the first athlete in the history of high school football in Virginia to run and throw for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. As a quarterback, he was recognized as an all-state and All-American pick. On September 6, 1996, the football stadium at Oscar F. Smith High School was renamed “Beard–DeLong–Easley Field” in Easley’s honor, along with those of two other football grads, Ed Beard and Steve DeLong.

Easley reportedly had offers from 350 universities but decided to attend the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he played football for the Bruins. In his first season as a true freshman in 1977, he started all ten games, finished the year with nine interceptions, and was chosen to his first all-Pac-10 team. His 93 tackles set a new school record for the most tackles by a true freshman in a single season.

Later, he made history by being the first player in the league to be recognized as an all-conference for four years. Easley’s collegiate career spanned from 1977 through 1980, and he concluded with a school record of 19 interceptions, 324 tackles, and 45 punt returns for 454 yards. He also set the record for most punt returns with 45.

Easley was voted into the All-American team by his peers three times (1978, 1979, and 1980) and came in ninth place in the voting for the Heisman Trophy in 1980. The Bruins honored him by retiring his No. 5 jersey, and he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in the same year, 1991.

In addition to that, he participated in basketball for UCLA, playing on the junior varsity team. The Chicago Bulls picked him up in the tenth round of the 1981 NBA draft, although he never played for them. The Seattle Seahawks picked Easley with the fourth overall choice in the 1981 NFL Draft. He went on to have a successful career in the National Football League.

In his first season with the team, 1981, he was immediately thrust into action as a starter and finished with three interceptions, 155 yards returned for a touchdown, and AFC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Chuck Knox, a former coach for the Buffalo Bills, was appointed as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks in 1983. Easley immediately became known as the “backbone” of Knox’s defense.

Easley earned the American Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year Award in his debut season playing for Knox, during which he also collected seven interceptions. 1984 Easley led the National Football League in interceptions with 10, tying a club record. He was given the NFL Defensive Player of the Year title and was the first safety to win the honor since Dick Anderson in 1973. He scored touchdowns on two of the interceptions he recovered.

In 1984, the Seattle Seahawks broke the record for the most touchdowns scored from an interception in a game by returning four interceptions for touchdowns. Easley caught one of these touchdowns, and the game ended with a score of 45–0 in favor of the Seahawks against the Kansas City Chiefs at the Kingdome on November 4. In addition, when Paul Johns suffered an injury early in the season, he stepped up to take over the primary punt returner job for the club.

Easley re-signed with the Seahawks after the season’s conclusion on a new five-year deal that will pay him an average of $650,000 per year in addition to incentives. Because of the agreement, he is now one of the league’s defensive players with the highest salary. When defensive lineman Cortez Kennedy was picked for his fifth straight Pro Bowl in 1995, the franchise record for most consecutive selections to the Pro Bowl was broken. Easley’s history stood until then.

Easley was sidelined for most of the 1986 season due to injuries; on October 11, he suffered a knee injury while playing against the San Diego Chargers, and the following month, he missed the balance of the season due to ankle surgery. When the Seattle Seahawks were trying to acquire the #1 overall choice in the 1987 NFL take from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to take quarterback Vinny Testaverde, rumors were circulating in December that Easley would be put up for trade.

Before the 1988 season, the Seahawks attempted to acquire a quarterback by trading Easley to many teams hoping to receive one in exchange. Easley was deemed disposable due to his deteriorating performance, primarily attributed to his efforts during the strike and the development of Paul Moyer, who served as Easley’s backup.

Easley was dealt to the Phoenix Cardinals on April 22, 1988, in exchange for quarterback Kelly Stouffer by the Seattle Seahawks. Easley had idiopathic nephrotic syndrome at the required team physical, a severe kidney illness that caused the transaction to be null and void. Easley informed Moyer that Easley believed that his time spent with the Seahawks was ending directly due to his participation in the player’s strike.

The diagnosis of renal disease “shocked” him, in contrast to the fact that he was not astonished when the deal occurred. Easley announced his retirement a few months after the deal was finalized. The Seahawks had given the Cardinals numerous draft selections as compensation for completing the transaction. In 1991, Easley purchased a stake in a vehicle dealership, which he did in partnership with Rick Johnson.

Alderwood Oldsmobile & Cadillac was established in Lynnwood, Washington, to take advantage of a program offered by General Motors that simplified the process of dealership ownership for African-Americans and other members of underrepresented minority groups. The dealership eventually relocated to Shoreline, Washington, in the year 1996. As a result of the dealership’s growing prosperity, Easley was elevated to the position of president of the African American Dealers Association.

In 1999, Easley and Buffalo Bills defensive end Bruce Smith were announced as the new owners of the Norfolk Nighthawks of the AF2. The AF2 was a semi-professional arena football league that split from the Arena Football League.

A disagreement erupted between the city of Norfolk, Virginia, and Mark Garcea and Page Johnson, the owners of the Hampton Roads Admirals minor league hockey club, the day after the city of Norfolk, Virginia, announced that Easley and Smith would be taking over ownership of the team. Garcea and Johnson indicated they were present at the first AF2 meetings and applied to the city for the sole right to control the franchise. They have also provided a down payment of $5,000.

Instead, the city agreed to let Easley and Smith pay the league’s franchise fee of $75,000 out of their own pockets. During the summer of 2000, the AF2 began their competitive career by competing in their first games. The Nighthawks played in front of an average of 6,500 people at their home field every game during his first season as owner, and he was able to sell 3,200 season tickets. Easley pointed the finger at “rookie mistakes” and starting fees for the team’s financial loss in their first season, even though they qualified for the AF2 playoffs. Before the start of the 2004 season, the team was dissolved.
