Kevin Michael Harvick is a stock car racing driver from the United States of America. He was born today, December 8, 1975. His most recent full-time competition was in the NASCAR Cup Series, where he drove the No. 4 Ford Mustang for Stewart–Haas Racing until recently. In 2002, he intended to compete against Harvick by way of a full program. Harvick started his first Cup race the following week in the Dura Lube 400 at Rockingham, taking the position lost by Earnhardt’s demise in the renumbered No. 29 Chevrolet. Childress’s plans were altered as a result of the circumstances surrounding the death of Dale Earnhardt on the last lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001.
Only three weeks after Earnhardt’s passing, on March 11, 2001, Harvick won his first Winston Cup race in his career by barely beating Jeff Gordon in the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. After the season, Harvick would finish with six pole positions and 69 starts. By the end of the 2002 season, Harvick had devoted his whole season to competing in the Cup Series, and he would only start four races in the Busch Series.
When Harvick started the 2002 season, he made his first Daytona 500 start on the outside pole next to Jimmie Johnson. However, his day was cut short when he caused an 18-car incident on lap 148 when he was running second behind Jeff Gordon. As a result, he finished in 36th position. The incident that occurred after the race at Bristol Motor Speedway resulted in him receiving a fine later on in the season.
Harvick was also punished for harsh driving in a Truck race at Martinsville. During the race, he made a statement on his radio claiming he purposely spun out driver Coy Gibbs, which prompted NASCAR to quickly remove him from the competition. Harvick was penalized for his actions. Even though it was broadcast on the radio that he did, Harvick lied in an interview that took place after the race, claiming that he did not intentionally damage Gibbs.
The next day, Harvick was disqualified from the Cup Series race, and Kenny Wallace was appointed to take his place.
