Born Kurt Vogel Russell on March 17, 1951, in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States, Kurt Russell is an American actor who rose to fame as a child actor in the 1960s, starring in a number of Disney films. He then shifted to a successful career as a leading man, possibly best known for his roles in action dramas. His full name is Kurt Vogel Russell. After Russell reached age four, his family uprooted and relocated from Massachusetts to California. There, his father, Neil “Bing” Russell, who had previously played baseball professionally, embarked on a career in acting, most notably making an appearance in the television series Bonanza.

The younger version of Russell had a passion for athletics, particularly baseball, but he also had a passing interest in acting. It was in 1962 that he made his first television appearance, and his first two shows were Dennis the Menace and The Dick Powell Theatre. He tried out for the role of Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris, two of the greatest baseball players of all time, in the 1962 film Safe at Home!, but he was ultimately unsuccessful. Later in his career, Russell became known for his part as the lead of the television series The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters (1963–1964). He also appeared on other popular television programs, including The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Gilligan’s Island. In addition, he made his debut in the film industry the same year, appearing in It Happened at the World’s Fair.

Follow Me, Boys! was the first of Russell’s roles in a Walt Disney production, including The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969) and Superdad (1973). The film debuted Russell as an actor in 1966. Throughout this time, he kept playing baseball, and in the years that followed, he was a member of a few minor league teams. However, in 1973 he suffered a tear to his rotator cuff, and this injury effectively ended his baseball career. After that, he decided to concentrate on his acting, and, in contrast to many other young actors, he had no trouble making the move to parts involving adults. Particular praise came his way for his work in two television movies: “The Deadly Tower” (1975), in which he played Charles Whitman, the mass killer responsible for the event known as the Texas Tower shooting of 1966, and “Elvis” (1979), a biography about the renowned artist. Both of these movies were shown on television.

The latter picture was helmed by John Carpenter, and the two men went on to work together on several films in the years that followed, including possibly their most famous project, 1981’s Escape from New York. Russell plays the role of Snake Plissken, a former military hero turned criminal who is taken to Manhattan, which has been transformed into a maximum-security prison, in that action thriller. However, the authorities have promised that they will release him if he successfully rescues the president of the United States, whose plane has just crashed in the borough. The movie went on to achieve cult classic status, which helped Russell solidify his position as a celebrity. After starring with Meryl Streep in Mike Nichols’ critically acclaimed drama Silkwood (1983), Russell collaborated with John Carpenter once again on the science fiction horror picture The Thing (1982). He had a role in the romantic comedy Swing Shift, released in 1984, and starred in Goldie Hawn.

Even though the movie was a failure, Russell and Hawn became one of Hollywood’s most successful couples. After that, he had starring roles in other criminal dramas, such as The Mean Season (1985) and Tequila Sunrise (1988). The latter film, a financial success about distributing drugs, also starred Mel Gibson and Michelle Pfeiffer. Tango & Cash (1989), an action comedy starring Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone, was met with negative reviews from film critics but was a commercial success at the box office. Backdraft (1991), an action drama directed by Ron Howard and centered on firemen in Chicago, was where Russell received his best praise. In the 1993 Western Tombstone, he played the role of Wyatt Earp, which helped make the film very successful. Following his performance in the science fiction film Stargate (1994), Kurt Russell returned to the role of Snake Plissken in John Carpenter’s Escape from L.A. (1996). Despite this, the movie was not well received by audiences.

Even far into the 21st century, Russell continued to be in demand as an actor. In 2004, he had a starring role in the box office hit Miracle, based on the true story of the United States men’s ice hockey team that shocked the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympic Games held in Lake Placid, New York. After that, in 1974, he appeared in Poseidon, an updated version of the cult classic film from 1972 about an ocean liner that sinks. After that, he was offered a role in Quentin Tarantino’s film Death Proof (2007), in which he played a violent stunt driver. In 2015, he collaborated with Quentin Tarantino on the film The Hateful Eight. In 2016, he appeared in the action film Deepwater Horizon, based on the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.

During this time, he was also cast in multiple installments of the critically acclaimed film series The Fast and the Furious, including Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), and F9: The Fast Saga (2021). In addition, Russell had a part in the Marvel Comics superhero team film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), which was a commercial success. James Gunn directed this film. In the 2018 holiday comedy The Christmas Chronicles, he played Santa Claus, while Hawn played Mrs. Claus; the two of them also featured together in the sequel, which is set to be released in 2020. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood is a drama directed by Quentin Tarantino and set in Los Angeles in 1969. In 2019, Russell had a cameo appearance in the film as a stunt supervisor.

Russell’s work as a supporting actor in Mike Nichols’s film Silkwood (1983) earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. In the 1980s, he starred in several films that John Carpenter directed. These films included anti-hero roles such as the army hero-turned-robber Snake Plissken in the futuristic action film Escape from New York (1981) and its sequel Escape from L.A. (1996). He also starred in the horror film The Thing (1982) and the kung-fu comedy action film Big Trouble in Little China (1986). He was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance as rock and roll legend Elvis Presley in the 1979 film Elvis. This nomination was in recognition of his work.

Used Cars (1980), The Best of Times (1986), Overboard (1987), Tango & Cash (1989), Backdraft (1991), Tombstone (1993), Stargate (1994), Executive Decision (1996), Breakdown (1997), Vanilla Sky (2001), Miracle (2004), Sky High (2005), Death Proof (2007), The Hateful Eight (2015), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) are some of the other movies in which Russell has had starring roles. He portrayed Ego in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) installments Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) and What If…? (2021), and subsequently portrayed Santa Claus in The Christmas Chronicles (2018) and The Christmas Chronicles 2 (2020). He also appeared in the Fast and Furious franchise as Mr. Nobody, having starred in Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), and F9 (2021).
