Lorde Biography and Career:

Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, who was given the stage name Lorde upon entering the music industry and was born on November 7, 1996, is a singer and songwriter from New Zealand. She chose a stage name that was based on aristocracy because of her unique musical styles and introspective lyricism, both of which have earned her a reputation. Although Lorde was still in her early teens, she demonstrated interest in performing at local venues. In 2009, she became a member of the Universal Music Group (UMG), and the following year, in 2011, she began working with producer Joel Little to record music. Prior to the commercial publication of their first work by UMG in 2013, they had their first release, an extended play (EP) titled The Love Club, which they had self-released in 2012 and made available for free download on SoundCloud. Lorde’s rise to stardom was aided by the fact that the single “Royals” from her EP topped the charts worldwide.

That same year, she released her first studio album, titled Pure Heroine, which was met with widespread acclaim and economic success. The next year, Lorde was in charge of putting together the soundtrack for the movie “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” which was released in 2014, and she also contributed numerous tunes, including her single “Yellow Flicker Beat. Melodrama, Lorde’s second studio album, was released in 2017 and quickly rose to the top of the US Billboard 200 Albums chart upon its initial release. She experimented with indie folk and psychedelic influences for her third studio album, Solar Power (2021), which was released in 2021. Despite receiving mixed reviews from both music critics and fans, the album was a commercial success and placed in the top 10 in a number of countries around the world. It topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand.

Two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, and a nomination for a Golden Globe are among the many honors that Lorde has received. She was included on the list of the most influential teens published by Time in 2013 and 2014, as well as the list of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 for the year 2014. In addition to her work under her own name, she has also contributed to the songwriting of other musicians, such as Bleachers and Broods. As of June 2017, Lorde has clocked in sales of more than five million albums around the globe. The poet Sonja Yelich (Croatian: Jeli) and the civil engineer Vic O’Connor are Ella Marija Lani Yelich-parents. O’Connor’s Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor was born on November 7, 1996, in Takapuna, New Zealand, which is a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. While her father is of Irish origin, her mother was born in Croatia to immigrant parents from the province of Dalmatia.

After being together for thirty years, they made their engagement public in 2014, and two years later, in 2017, they wed in a small, intimate ceremony at Cheltenham Beach. Lorde was born in New Zealand but also holds citizenship in Croatia. She has an elder sister named Jerry, a younger sister named India, and a younger brother named Angelo. Lorde is the middle kid out of the four children. They spent their childhood in the suburbs of Devonport and Bayswater located on Auckland’s North Shore. She began participating in theatre productions at the age of five, where she honed her abilities in front of an audience. Her mother inspired her to read across a variety of literary subgenres, which Lorde noted as an influence on her lyrical writing. She notably mentions the young adult dystopian novel Feed (2002) by M.T. Anderson as an influence on her songwriting, in addition to authors J.D. Salinger, Raymond Carver, and Janet Frame.

Her mother put her through the Woodcock–Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities to measure her level of intellect after receiving a recommendation to do so from a teacher at her daughter’s school. According to the findings, Lorde, who was 6 at the time, was a talented child.  For a short period of time, she was a student at the George Parkyn Centre, an institution that caters to bright students. But, Sonja took her out of school, citing concerns about her social development.  When Lorde was younger, she went to Vauxhall School. When she was in her early teens, she transferred to Belmont Intermediate School. While she was a student at Vauxhall, she competed in the North Shore Primary Schools’ Speech competition, which is a nationwide competition, in both 2006 and 2007. In both years, she earned third place, and in 2007 she won first place.

Lorde and the Belmont team that she was on finished in second place in the 2009 Kids’ Lit Quiz World Finals, which was a global literature competition for youngsters between the ages of 10 and 14. As a member of a duo with her close friend Louis McDonald, Lorde took first place at the annual talent competition held at Belmont Intermediate School in May of 2009. In August of that same year, Lorde and McDonald appeared as special guests on the afternoon program hosted by Jim Mora on Radio New Zealand. Cover versions of “Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)” by Pixie Lott and “Use Someone” by Kings of Leon were among the songs they played there.  Following this, McDonald’s father forwarded his recordings of his sons performing a cover of “Mama Do” and “Warwick Avenue” by Duffy to the A&R executive for Universal Music Group (UMG), Scott Maclachlan.

After that, MacLachlan got her signed to UMG so that she could further her career. In addition, Lorde was a member of the band Extreme, which represented Belmont Intermediate School, and competed in the North Shore Battle of the Bands finals on November 18, 2009, at the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna, Auckland. Extreme finished in third place. In 2010, Lorde and McDonald collaborated under the moniker “Ella & Louis” to establish a duo that played live renditions of cover songs at a variety of local places. These venues included cafés in the city of Auckland as well as the Victoria Theatre in Devonport.  Frances Dickinson was employed as a vocal coach by UMG in 2011 to provide her with singing sessions twice a week for a period of one year.

Around this time, Maclachlan made a number of unsuccessful attempts to team Lorde up with a variety of producers and composers. Reading short stories helped her develop her ability to “put words together” as she worked on her songwriting career. [In November of 2011, Lorde gave her debut performance at the Victoria Theatre, during which she sang her own original songs. Maclachlan introduced Lorde to Joel Little in December. Little is a songwriter, and record producer, and was formerly the lead singer for the band Goodnight Nurse. The duo spent three weeks at Little’s Golden Age Studios in Morningside, Auckland, recording five songs for an extended play (EP), and they were successful in completing the project.  Between the years of 2010 and 2013, she attended Takapuna Grammar School and earned her high school diploma, all while pursuing a career in music.  She later made the decision to skip Year 13 in 2014 and not return to school.

The debut studio album for vLorde, titled Pure Heroine, was released in September 2013, and it was met with widespread acclaim; it was included on a number of year-end best album lists. The album includes the single “Royals.”The representation of suburban adolescent disillusionment and critiques of contemporary popular culture earned the album a significant amount of attention when it was released. As of February 2014, the album had already sold more than one million copies in the United States, making it the first debut album by a female artist to accomplish this feat since Adele’s album 19 was released in 2008. In addition to receiving a nomination for a Grammy in the category of Best Pop Vocal Album, Pure Heroine had already sold four million copies around the globe as of May 2017.

Other singles taken from the album include “Tennis Court,” “Team,” and “Glory and Gore,” the latter of which was only distributed to radio stations in the United States. “Tennis Court” topped the charts in New Zealand, and “Team” landed at number six in the United States. After a competitive bidding process that included Sony Music Entertainment and her record company UMG, Lorde settled on a publishing agreement with Songs Music Publishing in November of 2013. The contract was reportedly valued at $2.5 million US dollars. The publisher was granted the right to license Lorde’s music for use in films and advertisements as a result of the deal.  Towards the end of the month, Lorde contributed to the soundtrack for the film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, delivering a cover of the song “Everyone Wants to Conquer the World” by Tears for Fears, which was originally released in 1985.

In 2013 and 2014, Time magazine ranked her as one of the most influential teenagers in the world, and she was on both of that years’ lists.  She was the youngest person to be featured in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list from 2014, which she landed after being selected for that list. She was included in 2013, 2014, and 2015 editions of Billboard’s list of the “21 Under 21.” Lorde gave performances at a number of music festivals in the first half of 2014, including the Laneway Festival in Sydney, the three South American editions of Lollapalooza (in Chile, Argentina, and Brazil), and the Coachella Festival in California. Thereafter, she embarked on a concert tour across the world, which started in the United States of America at the beginning of 2014.

In the midst of her solo endeavors, Lorde joined the remaining members of Nirvana to perform “All Apologies” during the band’s induction ceremony at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2014.  Members of the band Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl claimed that they chose Lorde because her songs embodied a “Nirvana aesthetic” due to the observant lyrics that they contained. In addition, Lorde was the music supervisor for the album that accompanied the film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, released in 2014. She was in charge of the compilation of the album’s songs and also contributed four original recordings, one of which was the album’s lead single titled “Yellow Flicker Beat.” In 2015, the song was responsible for Lorde being nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Original Song. By the end of that same year, she was featured on the song “Magnets” by the British electronic duo Disclosure, which was included on their album Caracal in 2015.

In January 2016, Lorde uprooted her life and moved to the wealthy suburb of Herne Bay in the city of Auckland. In February of 2016, during the Brit Awards, Lorde and David Bowie’s final touring band delivered a tribute performance of his song “Life on Mars.” The song was first released in 1971.  Pianist Mike Garson, who was a frequent band member for David Bowie, claimed that Lorde was chosen by Bowie’s family and management because he admired her and felt that she represented “the future of music.”  Later on, in 2015, New Zealand music duo Broods included the song “Heartlines” on their album Conscious, which Lorde contributed to the song’s writing.
