Mia Kirshner is a well-known Canadian actress, writer, and social activist. She was born on January 25, 1975, in Canada. She is best known for her appearances on television as Mandy in 24 (2001–2005), Jenny Schecter in The L Word (2004–2009), Amanda Grayson in Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2019), and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2023), and Isobel Flemming in The Vampire Diaries (2010–2011). Her television career began in the late 1970s.

Love and Human Remains (1993), Exotica (1994), The Crow: City of Angels (1996), Mad City (1997), Not Another Teen Movie (2001), and The Black Dahlia (2006) are some of the movies in which she has appeared and for which she has received credit. Kirshner’s ancestors on his father’s side were Jews from Poland. Kirshner was raised in the middle class and first attended Forest Hill Collegiate Institute before transferring to Jarvis Collegiate Institute and earning his diploma there.

Kirshner attended McGill University in Montreal, where he focused his studies on Russian literature and the film business of the 20th century. Lauren Kirshner, a writer, and her younger sister participated in the I Live Here initiative. Kirshner began her acting career in 1989 with the episode “Loving the Alien” from the second season of “War of the Worlds.” In this episode, she plays the role of Jo, a teenage resistance fighter kidnapped and copied by the hostile aliens, as well as her counterpart.

At 18, Kirshner debuted in the film Love and Human Remains, directed by Denys Arcand and released in 1993. She successfully persuaded her father to agree to a “nudity waiver” so that she could play a dominatrix. The following year, she had a role in Exotica, which Atom Egoyan directed. She had an appearance in the film The Crow: City of Angels in the year 1996. In the 1997 film adaptation of Anna Karenina, she also performed the role of Kitty Scherbatsky.

In the first three episodes of the first season of 24 aired in 2001, Kirshner featured as the assassin Mandy. She would perform the part again for the conclusion of the second season and the second half of the program’s fourth season. In the film Not Another Teen Movie, released the same year, Kirshner portrayed Catherine Wyler, also known as “The Cruellest Girl in School.”

The character is mostly a parody of Kathryn Merteuil, who Sarah Michelle Gellar portrayed in Cruel Intentions. The feeling was partly inspired by Mackenzie Siler, who Anna Paquin represented in She’s All That. She had a cameo appearance as her character Catherine Wyler in the music video for “Tainted Love” by Marilyn Manson, which was included on the film’s soundtrack.

Kirshner was cast as the main character Jenny Schecter, a writer, in the drama series The L Word in 2004. She continued working on the program until the sixth and last season in 2009. In the film The Black Dahlia, directed by Brian De Palma and released in 2006, she played the role of Elizabeth Short, a young aspiring actress whose body was dismembered and murdered in 1947; the case is still unresolved. While the movie received mostly negative reviews, several critics praised her performance.

In a review unfavorable primarily, Stephanie Zacharek of Salon.com said that the eponymous character was “played wonderfully by Mia Kirshner…”Mick LaSalle commented that Kirshner “makes a real impression of the Dahlia as a sad, lonely dreamer, a pathetic figure.” Kirshner does this by portraying Dahlia as a miserable figure.J. R. Jones referred to her performance as “haunting” and said that the fake screen tests in the movie “deliver the emotional darkness that is sorely lacking in the rest of the movie.”

In the film 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, which started production in the autumn of 2009 and was released the following year in 2010, Kirshner played the role of a co-star. In 2010, she was given a recurring role in The Vampire Diaries as a character named Isobel Flemming.
In 2011, she provided the voice for the main character in the online documentary Bear 71, which was produced by the National Film Board of Canada and had its world debut at the Sundance Film Festival.

According to the official announcement, Kirshner’s participation in the brand-new Syfy series Defiance was confirmed on April 20, 2012.
On the Showcase blog on October 9, 2013, it was reported that Kirshner would be among the numerous guest stars in season four of the television series Lost Girl. The season four premiere occurred on October 16, 2013. In 2018, she started a recurring role on Star Trek: Discovery as Amanda Grayson, the foster mother of the series protagonist Michael Burnham and mother of Spock. This is a part that Jane Wyatt introduced in the first Star Trek film.

On September 5, 2019, the news outlet ET Online of Entertainment Tonight reported that Kirshner would play a character in the upcoming Lifetime movie The College Admissions Scandal along with co-star Penelope Ann Miller in roles inspired by real-life actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman’s involvement in a massive college admissions bribery scam.

Kirshner was cited as stating the following on her part: “This narrative is about privilege and corruption, and it’s about individuals who don’t obey the laws because they believe they’re above rules… My character [which was based on Loughlin but was given the name “Bethany” in the movie] is so dishonest, selfish, egotistical, and self-centered, and the dialogue is funny, so I’m delighted that they’re able to capture comedy about this as well.”

It was reported in September 2020 that Kirshner would be co-starring with Ben Savage in a Hallmark Channel holiday film titled Love, Lights, Hanukkah! The film’s debut occurred on December 12, 2020. Christina, the character that Kirshner portrays, is a restaurant owner who takes a DNA test and discovers that she has Jewish ancestors. I Live Here was finally released into the world by Kirshner in October 2008 after having been in the works for seven years.

She co-produced with former Adbusters staff members Paul Shoebridge and Michael Simons and author James MacKinnon. Four distinct groups of women and children refugees from diverse parts of the world, including Chechnya, Juárez, Burma, and Malawi, each share their life tales inside the pages of this book. The book contains brand-new work by renowned comic and graphic artists such as Joe Sacco and Phoebe Gloeckner.

Random House and Pantheon are responsible for the book’s publication in the United States. Amnesty International provided the organization with logistical help, and they will get some of the revenues from the book. After the book’s publication, Kirshner was asked by the Center for International Studies at MIT to teach a four-week “I Live Here” course beginning in January 2009.
