Micah Bowie Biography and Career:

Former Major League Baseball pitcher Micah Andrew Bowie was born on November 10, 1974. He pitched left-handed for the Major League Baseball team. They selected him in the eighth round of the 1993 draft by the Atlanta Braves. He made his debut in Major League Baseball on July 24, 1999, and despite having been a starter for most of his career up to this point, he made three relief appearances before being moved to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Terry Mulholland and José Hernández. Ruben Quevedo and a minor league player to be named later (Joey Nation) were also included in the deal.

He started 11 games for the Cubs and finished with an earned run average of 9.96. After spending the next year pitching in the minor leagues as a starter, he signed with the Oakland Athletics and began his career as a relief pitcher. In 2002, Bowie was a member of the A team that completed a victory run of twenty games in a row. The Arizona Diamondbacks signed him to a minor league deal after the conclusion of the 2003 season; however, he had Tommy John surgery and could not participate in the 2004 season.

It was in December of 2004 that the Washington Nationals announced that they had signed him to a minor league deal. Following his successful performance as a reliever with the Nationals’ Triple-A club, the New Orleans Zephyrs, Bowie was promoted to the main leagues in July. Before landing on the injured list and missing the remainder of the season, he was successful as a set-up man in 15 relief appearances, with an earned run average of 1.37.

In 2007, the Nationals re-signed him, and he began the season as a regular set-up reliever from the beginning of the season. Midway through May, he had already participated in 20 games and had a 3.71 earned run average. However, he was immediately forced into duty as a starter when four Nationals starters landed on the injured list. On the 20th of May, Bowie made his first start in the Major Leagues since 1999. He pitched three and one-third innings, surrendering two runs, and the game ended with no decision.

With a record of 4–0 and an earned run average of 3.82 after six appearances, Bowie had shown that he was the most reliable starter for the Nationals by the 17th of June. He was, however, put on the injured list on July 2 due to a hip injury that he sustained. On October 17, 2007, Bowie was sent down to the minor leagues without any conditions. Instead of accepting the assignment, he decided to become a free agent.

On December 21, 2007, the Colorado Rockies invited Bowie to participate in spring training as part of a minor league deal the team had signed. As a bullpen member, the club decided to have him on the season’s opening-day roster. On June 26, the Rockies sent Bowie with an outright assignment to the minor levels; however, Bowie declined the assignment and became a free agency later that day.

Additionally, on July 3, 2008, Bowie inked a deal with the Houston Astros to play in the minor leagues. Around the middle of August, the Astros decided to let him go. Bowie has been running a baseball school since he retired in 2008. In 1995, in the middle of a doubleheader featuring the Durham Bulls, Bowie tied the knot with Keeley Kolacek. The couple has two children together.

In August 2016, Bowie decided to have a spinal cord stimulator inserted to alleviate the discomfort he was experiencing. This decision was made since he had experienced back issues throughout his playing career and did not want to endure disk fusion surgery, which may have to be repeated. After about one month, the gadget eventually failed; the battery moved around, causing damage to his liver, diaphragm, and one of his lungs.

The Mayo Clinic discovered that his lungs had been burned by electrical currents when he continued to have difficulties breathing. In May 2019, the device was removed from his lungs at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, by the same physician who had earlier healed his groin damage in 2007.

His lung capacity is just 8% of what it was before. However, the Major League Baseball Assistance Team and the Oakland Athletics Community Fund helped Bowie and his family with the medical expenditures that resulted from his injury. Bowie was 20 days shy of the four years on the roster that the Major League Baseball Players Association requires to issue a disability claim automatically automatically.
