Mike Tirico Biography and Career:

Mike Tirico is a well-known sports commentator born in the United States on December 13, 1966. After Al Michaels’ retirement in 2022, he became the play-by-play announcer for the National Football League on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Tirico was a broadcaster for ESPN’s Monday Night Football as a play-by-play announcer from 2006 through 2015. Throughout his career, Tirico has been a commentator for various sports, including the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, college football and basketball, golf, tennis, and the World Cup.

During the summer of 2016, Tirico’s contract with ESPN ended, marking the end of his 25-year tenure at the network. Shortly after, NBC Sports decided to recruit Tirico. Tirico made his television broadcasting debut during NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Open Championship. Since then, he has acted as the network’s primary host for golf coverage. Tirico began his career at ESPN in 1991 as an anchor for SportsCenter. Before that, he worked for four years as the Sports Director at the CBS affiliate WTVH in Syracuse, New York. This was during his time as a student at Syracuse University.

It was well known that Tirico could undertake a wide array of tasks for SportsCenter, which contributed to his reputation as a versatile individual. The very first host to appear on ESPN News was Tirico. Play-by-play duties for ESPN’s Thursday night college football package, college basketball coverage, NBA coverage, and golf coverage for ESPN/ABC were all handled by Tirico. Tirico also presented studio coverage of numerous events broadcast on ESPN and ABC, including a run from 1993 to 2001 on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown and several NBA studio broadcasts on ABC. Additionally, he did play-by-play for the NBA Finals on ESPN Radio and was a broadcaster for NBA games on ESPN and ABC.

He co-anchored the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and the UEFA Euro 2016. He also anchored the 2009 U.S. Open, which was held in New York City. Following a leak the previous month, it was formally revealed on May 9, 2016, that Mike Tirico would begin working for NBC Sports on July 1, 2016, with the move taking effect immediately. Tirico bowed out of his role as an analyst for ESPN for the final time on June 30, 2016, after the conclusion of the network’s coverage of the UEFA Euro 2016 soccer competition for that day. Tirico made his first on-air appearance on an NBC property at the 2016 Open Championship on NBC’s Golf Channel. He provided play-by-play commentary for the first three hours of programming, including the first and second rounds. Tirico took over as the studio host during the afternoons of both Thursday and Friday, and he hosted all of the coverage that aired on NBC during the weekend. This job began on Thursday.

During the NBC broadcasts of the 2016 Summer Olympics, which took place in August from Rio de Janeiro, Tirico served as a studio host and contributed content. Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated proposed that Mike Tirico would be able to take over for Bob Costas as the primetime host of NBC’s coverage of the Olympics. After the Winter Olympics in 2014, NBC Sports chairman Mark Lazarus revealed that the division has began “thinking about what life after Bob might be, whether post-Rio, post-Pyeongchang, or post-Tokyo, whenever he does not want to do it anymore.” Additionally, Deitsch thought that Tirico’s background in radio may make him a valuable contributor to the NBC Sports Radio network.

Initially, it was claimed by Sports Business Journal that Tirico would be NBC’s principal play-by-play commentator for Thursday Night Football and that he was likely to be a future successor to Al Michaels. The National Football League later declared that according to its deal with NBC, the network was compelled to utilize the NFL’s primary play-by-play commentator for all primetime broadcasts. In the interim, Tirico called the two preseason games allotted to NBC.

He was also placed on play-by-play for NBC’s first three Notre Dame college football games to fill in for Dan Hicks. This was necessary since Hicks had scheduling problems with his lead play-by-play duty on NBC’s golf coverage, including the 2016 Ryder Cup. Tirico would join Hicks in hosting the broadcast of the event that will take place on Sunday. On May 31, 2017, it was announced that Mike Tirico would permanently replace Al Michaels as the play-by-play commentator for all of NBC’s Thursday Night Football games. Michaels had held the position since the show’s inception. Tirico took over for Tom Hammond as the play-by-play announcer for Notre Dame football and Triple Crown coverage in 2017.  He also became the full-time play-by-play announcer for Notre Dame football in 2017.

Tirico decided to attend Super Bowl LII to give his whole attention to preparing for the 2018 Winter Olympics, which started the following Friday. Following NBC’s loss of the Thursday Night Football broadcast to Fox during the 2018 NFL season, Tirico was assigned to broadcast the Thanksgiving game on NBC. His fellow analysts from Football Night in America, Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison, joined him. In December, he also worked as a commentator for two NFL Network Special games that Fox Sports produced.

On February 20, 2019, Tirico called his first National Hockey League game on NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Hockey between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings. Eddie Olczyk joined him as the color commentator and Brian Boucher as the “Inside-the-Glass” reporter for the broadcast. This was his first broadcast as a commentator, even though he has previously worked as a studio presenter for many NHL broadcasts. Viewers and sportswriters alike had positive things to say about his performance. In January of that year, he hosted coverage of the 2019 NHL Winter Classic in all three segments: pregame, intermission, and postgame.

Tirico sat in for Al Michaels on a few Sunday Night Football games during the 2020 season, similar to what happened in 2016. Because the COVID-19 epidemic is still active, NBC has agreed to grant Michaels 3–5 “bye weeks” to reduce the time he spends traveling. Michaels was suspended for one of those weeks because he did not meet the criteria set forth under NBC’s COVID-19 guidelines. In addition, he worked one of NBC’s two Wild Card games, albeit from a remote location due, once again, to COVID-19 protocols.

In addition, Tirico was supposed to work the Thanksgiving game that NBC was broadcasting, but the game was moved to Sunday instead. After that, Tirico worked the game that was supposed to take place on Sunday night alongside Tony Dungy and Kathryn Tappen. Tirico was not only maintained on duty for the fun scheduled initially on Sunday night but also placed back on duty for the game that was later postponed to take place on Wednesday. Michaels had initially intended to work the postponed game, but that game was postponed once more to Tuesday.

Tirico was the host of both the 2022 Winter Olympics and the Super Bowl LVI. He traveled to Los Angeles in the middle of the Games to provide coverage of the Olympics from outside SoFi Stadium on the weekend of the Super Bowl. Tirico was tasked with commenting on two late-season games that were part of the Thursday Night Football package created for NFL Network. These games took place on a Saturday and Christmas Sunday, respectively, and also featured Doug Flutie and Tony Dungy. In November of 2016, NBC announced that Tirico would be standing in for Al Michaels as the play-by-play announcer for three Sunday Night Football games, including the primetime game on Thanksgiving and one Thursday Night Football game. Tirico would work with Cris Collinsworth. As a result of the increased NFL coverage on NBC, Michaels had asked for some time off.

Bob Costas said that he would be stepping down from his role as the primetime host of NBC’s Olympics coverage on February 9, 2017 and that Mike Tirico would take over in that role beginning with the Winter Olympics in 2018. Tirico will take over from Costas starting with the 2018 Winter Olympics. After Costas stepped down, Tirico also took Costas’ place as the studio host for NBC’s coverage of the NFL and Football Night in America. Tirico has become the lead primetime host of the Olympics on NBC since joining NBC Sports. He has also served as the lead play-by-play announcer for Notre Dame Football on NBC, the host of Triple Crown races on NBC, the host of NBC’s Football Night in America, and the host of NBC’s coverage of the Indianapolis 500. Additionally, he hosted NBC’s coverage of the Stanley Cup.
