Roland Sebastian Martin was born on November 11, 1968, in the Third Ward of Houston, Texas, which is the centre of Houston’s African American community. Roland’s mother and father were the people he looked up to when he was growing up. His father was a big fan of newspapers and TV news. Roland found his passion for communications when he was 14. At Jack Yates High School, he was a part of the magnet programme in communications, which is where he found his passion.

Roland got an academic scholarship to go to Texas A&M University in 1987, where he studied journalism and worked for the Bryan-College Station Eagle and KBTX (Channel 3). Martin joined the Pi Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., when he was a junior in college, and he also went to the National Association of Black Journalists convention. Roland got his B.A. in Journalism from Texas A&M in 1991 and went to work at the Austin American-Statesman. Roland left Austin American-Statesman in the end and went to work for Forth Worth Star-Telegram as a city hall reporter.

In 1995, he started working as a sports reporter for KRLD radio as a morning driver reporter. During his time at KRLD, he won awards from the Houston Press Club and the National Association of Black Journalists for his sports reporting. Roland became the news editor at Dallas Weekly and the morning host for KKDA 730 AM. He also became the news editor at KKDA 730 AM. Roland was a freelance producer covering the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles in 2000 when his appendix burst. He had to file for bankruptcy to pay for his medical bills.

Mr. Martin has worked as a morning drive reporter for KRLD/1080 AM, as a news director and morning anchor for KKDA-AM in Dallas, as a city hall reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and as a county government and neighbours reporter for the Austin American-Statesman. He has also written for the magazines Ebony and Essence.

Mr. Martin is a life member of both Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the National Association of Black Journalists.
