Sania Mirza Biography and Career:

Sania Mirza is a professional tennis player from India. She was ranked number one in the world for doubles for many years and won six major titles overall, including three in women’s doubles and three in mixed doubles.  She was listed as the Indian No. 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association from the year 2003 till the year 2013, when she retired from playing the solo game.  Mirza has carved out a niche for herself as one of the most well-known, well-compensated, and prominent athletes in India during the course of her career. In singles competition, Mirza achieved victories over Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva, and Marion Bartoli. She also defeated Martina Hingis, Dinara Safina, and Victoria Azarenka, all of whom had previously held the position of world number one.

She reached a career high of world No. 27 in the middle of 2007, making her the highest-ranked Indian female player in the history of the sport. However, she was forced to switch to doubles after suffering a significant wrist injury. Mirza has accomplished a number of firsts for women’s tennis in India, including reaching the one million US dollar mark in career earnings (currently over US$7.2 million), winning a singles WTA Tour title, and winning a major title. Additionally, Mirza has qualified for (and eventually won) the WTA Finals in doubles competition in 2014 with Cara Black, and she defended her title the following year partnering Martina Hingis.

In the 2023 campaign, Mirza intends to call it quits from the world of professional tennis. She is the only Indian woman to be rated within the top 100 in singles and is one of just two women from India to have ever won a title on the WTA Tour. In the Open era, Mirza is the third Indian woman (after Nirupama Mankad and Nirupama Sanjeev, and the second in singles after Sanjeev) to compete in and win a match at a major tournament. However, she is the first Indian woman to get past the second round of a major tournament.

Mirza now holds the record for most WTA doubles titles won on the tour with 43 victories, more than any other active player. In addition to that, she has held the position of world No. 1 in doubles for a total of 91 weeks. Mirza was honoured by the WTA with the title of Newcomer of the Year in 2005. In 2015, she and Martina Hingis were named the Doubles Team of the Year, and they went on to record a 44-match winning streak, which is one of the longest in the annals of tennis history. In addition, Mirza has amassed a total of 14 medals (including six golds) during the course of three significant multi-sport competitions. These competitions include the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games, and the Afro-Asian Games.

After defeating the ninth-seeded Alona Bondarenko in the final of her local event in February, Mirza made history by being the first woman from India to ever win a WTA Tour championship. The event in question was the Hyderabad Open. In Dubai, she reached the biggest quarterfinal of her career by defeating Svetlana Kuznetsova in round two.
