SPM Biography and Career:
He Known professionally as SPM (an initialism for South Park Mexican), Carlos Coy is an American rapper, composer, founder of Dope House Records, and convicted sex offender. He was born on October 5, 1970, and his birth name is Carlos Coy. His moniker as a performer comes from the South Park area in Houston, Texas, which is where he spent his childhood decades.
1994 was the beginning of Coy’s career as a musician. Over the next year, he, his brother Arthur, and one of their mutual acquaintances established Dope House Records. It was in the same year that Coy made his debut as South Park Mexican with the album Hillwood, which was released by the same label.
Coy was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a minor in 2002 and was sentenced to 45 years in prison. He is presently serving his term at the Ramsey Unit in Rosharon, Texas, which is located in the state of Texas. In the year 2024, he will be eligible for release. Despite his incarceration, he has continued to record further songs.
It was Arturo, Coy’s father, who served in the Marine Corps and was originally from Falfurrias, Texas. Coy’s mother left high school to marry Arturo. It was three years after the birth of Coy that they eventually divorced. Sylvia, who is Coy’s sister, referred to herself as his “mother/sister” in her description. He received his primary education at many different schools before enrolling in the music magnet program at Welch Middle School.
He attended Woodson Middle School when his family relocated from southeast Houston to South Park. His ancestors came from the area. Under these circumstances (while he was still in his early teens), he started dealing crack cocaine. Scarface, whose actual name is Brad Jordan, was another student at Woodson University. Although he was in the ninth grade at the time of his expulsion in 1987, he continued his education at Milby High School.
Coy earned his General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and enrolled at San Jacinto Junior College to pursue an associate’s degree in business, but he was unsuccessful in all of his subjects there. once that, he worked at a chemical facility for the minimum salary, but once he found himself once again without a job, he began working as a door-to-door perfume salesperson and continued to be a crack cocaine dealer.
Although he started his career as a Christian rapper, Coy was under the impression that his faith caused him to be an outcast. South Park Mexican and SPM were the names under which Coy began rapping and recording songs around the year 1994. With the help of his brother Arthur Jr. and his friend Jose Antonio Garza, who was from McAllen, Texas, Coy established his own record company, Dope House Records, in the year 1995.
Coy released his first album, Hillwood, under the name South Park Mexican (SPM) in March of 1995. After promoting his first album for two years, Coy entered the studio in 1997 to begin production on his second record. When he released his second album, Hustle Town, it was in March of 1998. In the Houston underground rap scene, the album had a huge success upon its release.
It was on December 22, 1998, that Coy published his third album, titled Power Moves: The Table, which was successful in attracting the attention of the general public. He released his fourth studio album, titled “The 3rd Wish: To Rock the World,” on November 23, 1999. The album’s debut song, titled “High So High,” reached position #50 on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks list.
Within February in the year 2000, he negotiated a joint venture agreement between his record company and Universal Music Group, which resulted in him receiving a $500,000 advance and nationwide distribution. The albums Time is Money and The Purity Album (2000), as well as Never Change (2001), were all issued by Universal Records under their label. Purity Album included the track “You Know My Name,” which reached its highest position on the Billboard R&B chart at number 99 and the rap list at number 31.
“SPM delivers raunchy lyrics about growing up in the barrio and living the party life,” Ramiro Burr, a journalist for the San Antonio Express-News, said in a profile that he wrote in 2001 after analyzing the lyrical content of South Park Mexican. However, he claims that he also places a strong emphasis on working hard and feeling optimistic about the future.
When asked about his Universal records, Jason Birchmeier of Allmusic claimed that “Coy’s hardcore rapping proved to be too harsh for the masses.” His Universal recordings did not get much attention from the mainstream. Dope House was the label that distributed his album Reveille Park, which was a collection of freestyles, in the year 2002.
When Devils Strike, which was published in 2006, opened at number 46 on the Billboard 200, and The Last Chair Violinist, which was released in 2008, were both new albums that were released by Dope House. Both albums were recorded by Coy while he was jailed. On September 30, 2014, he published The Son of Norma, which was his first major release after a break of six years.
Coy was taken into custody by the Houston Police Department on September 25, 2001, and charged with aggravated sexual assault of a kid who was nine years old at the time. However, shortly after posting bond, he was released from the county prison. In that particular year, the event took place during the Labor Day weekend. On December 10, 2001, a jury in Harris County, Texas, indicted Coy and added another charge as a result of an event that occurred in 1993, when he reportedly impregnated a girl who was 13 years old at the time.
who then asked that he make child support payments to them. Two further accusations were brought against Coy in March 2002 for the sexual assault of two girls who were 14 years old; he was detained without bail. The trial of Coy started on May 8, 2002, when the mother of the nine-year-old child testified that the kid withdrew from a sleepover due to mistreatment.
The girl testified the next day that Coy had improperly touched her while she was asleep because she was sleeping.A jury in Houston chose to convict Coy of aggravated sexual abuse of a minor on May 18, 2002. In addition to being compelled to pay a fine of $10,000, he was given a sentence of forty-five years in jail on May 30.
