Squire Fridell Biography and Career:

Squire Fridell is a well-known American actor and spokesman born on February 9, 1943. Since the 1970s, he has starred in supporting parts in many movies and has also made guest appearances on many television episodes. Between 1986 and 1990, he represented Ronald McDonald in several commercials and the roles of Ronald McDonald in the films Mac and Me and The Adventures of Ronald McDonald: McTreasure Island, all of which were animated.

Squire is most well-known because of his contagious excitement in more than three thousand television ads. One of the most prominent commercial characters he created was that of the “Toyota Man,” who portrayed an individual who was content with his Toyota when the Japanese manufacturer attempted to penetrate the market in the United States. Fridell applied for the part of Ronald when King Moody stepped down from his post as King Moody in Oakland, California, and retired. This allowed him to relocate to Sonoma Valley.

He received his education at the University of the Pacific, where he participated in the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity throughout his time there. Currently, Squire and his wife, Suzy, make their home in Glen Ellen, located in the Sonoma Valley area of that state. Since 1989, they have been operating the GlenLyon Vineyards and Winery together.

Lexy, the daughter of Squire and Suzy, a professional dancer and dance instructor for many years, respectively, is now residing in New York City and pursuing a career in the acting industry. In this video, uploaded to YouTube in 2011, Squire can be seen performing the role of Ronald for RMHC. If there were a Mount Rushmore for legendary clowns, Pennywise and his toothy smile from It would be right in the middle of it in the year 2018.

If you turn the clock back thirty years, you’ll see that a kinder, gentler jester once ruled the landscape of popular culture. This jester dished out hamburgers rather than nightmares to the billions and billions of youngsters alive then. What’s his name? Of course, we’re talking about Ronald McDonald, the clown with the fiery hair who represents McDonald’s fast food company.

In recent years, good ol’ Ronald has had less of a presence in the marketing efforts that the firm has run, but in the 1980s, it was almost impossible to avoid his dazzling grin and equally dazzling yellow jumpsuit. The clown’s visage might be seen staring at children from Happy Meal boxes, advertisements on television, animated shorts, and even 8-bit video games.

This past weekend, on August 12, 1988, Ronald made his debut in Mac and Me, an E.T. imitation (or, if you prefer, rip-off) that, to this day, justifies its prominent place on the list of horrible movies for children. This weekend also marks the 30th anniversary of Ronald’s big-screen debut. Every time Paul Rudd appears on Conan, he promotes a different film, but he always plays a clip from Mac and Me instead of the one he’s there to sell. This further solidifies the film’s reputation as a go-to joke.

“It was kind of a disappointment,” says Squire Fridell, the actor who donned Ronald’s white facepaint in roughly 50 advertisements that ran during the height of his ubiquity in the 1980s, which lasted from 1985 to 1991. These commercials aired during the period in which Ronald was the most popular in the 1980s. That’s also him in the movie “Mac and Me,” when he makes an appearance in the middle of a scene in which the movie’s disabled hero, Eric (Jade Category), is trying to sneak his alien companion, Mac (which stands for “Mysterious Alien Creature”) into a birthday party/dance-off that’s being hosted at his local McDonald’s restaurant.

The fast-food company was heavily engaged in the movie’s production after being persuaded by the film’s producer, R.J. Louis, to lend the name to a significant motion picture to increase revenue at the box office and sales of hamburgers. In addition, Ronald McDonald served as the face of Mac and Me due to his position as the mascot of McDonald’s. The trailer’s opening scene has Fridell in full makeup, bragging that he is “on the set of my very first motion picture ever.”

The trailer was a little bit of a bait-and-switch, and not only because it made the movie appear like it may be attractive to some degree. Even though Ronald portrays himself as a co-star on par with the eponymous bug-eyed extraterrestrial in the film, Stewart Raffill has directed the movie. Ronald’s part in it is nothing more than a glorified cameo.

According to what Fridell has revealed to Yahoo Entertainment, earlier screenplay versions gave his alter ego a larger share in the action. “[In] the first script that we got, Ronald was featured all the way through,” says the now-retired actor, who these days supervises the GlenLyon Vineyards & Winery in California’s Sonoma Valley. “the second script that we got, Ronald was featured all the way through,” says the now-retired actor. “He turned into this otherworldly presence for the young boy,” the narrator says.

Then, as time went on — and every time you have meetings of a committee — things changed significantly. Fridell claims that the original screenplay justified Ronald’s presence, lacking in the final product, even though he cannot recall the scenes cut from the movie. “I didn’t understand my role in the thing,” he says of his presence, which amounts to around two minutes out of the movie’s total duration of 99. “I didn’t understand my role in the thing,” he adds of his appearance.

After rolling up to the McDonald’s where the birthday celebration is taking place, which is already in full swing, Eric and Mac — who is not so skillfully concealed in a teddy bear suit — are briefly welcomed by Ronald with a joyful, “Hiyah coach, how’s it going?” After that, the clown leaves to announce that the dancing competition has begun just as the alien-hunting FBI bad guys, Wickett and Zimmerman (Martin West and Ivan J. Rado), enter the restaurant.

The place is quickly filled with youngsters and McDonald’s workers dancing, encouraging Mac to break out of his disguise and go down on the dance floor himself. It would seem like a trivial quibble to question the plausibility of Ronald McDonald appearing in a film about a child who meets a rowdy extraterrestrial. However, criticizing the movie for its lack of reality would be a mistake. Fridell, who had an extensive career on episodic T.V. and commercials before McDonald’s came calling, succeeded in the part throughout his six-year stint, during which he became the Ronald McDonald for a generation of children. One of the reasons for this success was Fridell’s devotion to the character of Ronald McDonald. He had a lengthy career on episodic T.V. and commercials before McDonald’s came calling.
