Additionally, he is a hitting coach for the farm system of the Cleveland Guardians’ baseball team. Between the years 2008 and 2010, as well as in 2015, he was the manager of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
Lexington, Kentucky is the place where Fryman was born. His father, Bill Fryman, was a basketball coach and the manager of a tire company. Fryman was three years old when his family relocated to Pensacola, Florida. Since then, they have resided in both Pensacola and Orlando on many occasions. While Fryman was a youngster, he went to a Baptist church on a Sunday every week. After leading Gonzalez Tate High School to victory against Lake Mary High School at Rollins College in 1986, he was able to lead the school to the Florida high school title.
The Detroit Tigers selected Fryman in the first round of the 1987 Major League Baseball draft. Fryman was a graduate of Tate High School in Pensacola, Florida.[3]: He played shortstop for the Tigers in his first game with the team, which took place on July 7, 1990, at Tiger Stadium, in a game against the Kansas City Royals that finished in a 4–0 defeat. However, he ended up seeing more time at third base throughout his first season in the big leagues.
In 1991, Fryman played both shortstop and third base. However, in 1992, he was able to take over the starting shortstop position when Alan Trammell suffered an injury. In addition to earning his first All-Star selection, he also won the American League Silver Slugger Award at his position. He did this by hitting 20 home runs and driving in 96 runs this season. In 1993, Fryman began the season playing shortstop, but by the conclusion of the season, he had won the position of third baseman.
Before joining the Arizona Diamondbacks in a deal for Matt Drews after the 1997 season, he continued to play third base for the Detroit Tigers. Another trade took place two weeks after Fryman joined the Diamondbacks. This time, he was sent to the Indians along with pitcher Tom Martin in exchange for third baseman Matt Williams. During his first season in Cleveland, Fryman contributed to his club’s success by hitting 287 with 28 home runs and 96 RBIs. This helped his team win the American League Central Division championship.
When Fryman made his first postseason appearance, the Indians were defeated by the New York Yankees in the 1998 American League Championship Series. Fryman’s batting average was only 167, he did not have any runs batted in, and he had one error on the field.1999 was a difficult year for Fryman due to injuries. He bounced back and had his finest season ever in the year 2000. His batting average (.321), slugging percentage (.516), on-base percentage (.392), hits (184), doubles, and runs batted in (106), all set new career highs under his watch.
When he was on his way to receiving a Gold Glove Award, he had a string of sixty games in which he finished without error. In addition, he made just eight mistakes on the field. Additionally, he was the starting third baseman for the American League team that participated in the All-Star Game. In recognition of his efforts, his teammates presented him with the Gordon Cobbledick Golden Tomahawk Award, and the Cleveland Baseball Writers Association honored him as their Man of the Year.
Again, Fryman could not play in 2001 due to injuries, and he made his first appearance on June 2 of that year. Both his range factor (2.31), which was the lowest of all third basemen in the big leagues, and his zone rating (.680), which was also the lowest, were recorded in 2002. Throughout his career, which spanned 13 seasons, Fryman had a batting average of.274, 223 home runs, and 1,022 RBIs while playing in 1,698 games. Fryman hung up his cleats after the 2002 season.
Since 2008, Fryman has been serving as the manager of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, who are the Indians’ short-season A affiliate in the New York–Penn League. It was his first time managing the Indians after he had previously served as an infield teacher for the team during the spring training season of that particular year. The Cleveland Indians have shown their interest in Fryman as a potential candidate for the position of manager. In 2011, David Wallace got the job of managing the Scrappers.
Fryman is now serving as a hitting instructor for the Guardians farm system. In this capacity, he is responsible for traveling to all of the Guardians’ minor league clubs on the AAA, AA, and A levels. Mason, Branden, and Cole are the three children that Mister Fryman has. Kathleen, his future wife, was the one he wed in the early 1990s. After meeting Cathy, Frank Tanana’s wife, Kathleen, and Frank Tanana became devoted followers of the Christian faith.
