Angela James Biography and Career:

Angela Diane James OC is a Canadian ice hockey player who played at the top levels of senior hockey between the years 1980 and 2000. She was born on December 22, 1964, and graduated from the Ontario College of Hockey. Beginning in 1980 and continuing until 1998, she was a part of several teams that competed in the Central Ontario Women’s Hockey League (COWHL). She concluded her career by playing in the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL).

She received the title of most valuable player in her league on six separate occasions. Additionally, James is a coach and a licensed referee in the country of Canada. Richmond Hill, Ontario is where she makes her home. At the international level, James participated in the inaugural women’s world championship, which was an unofficial competition that took place in July of 1987. In the first ever IIHF World Women’s Championship, which took place in 1990, she was a member of Team Canada and she established a new scoring record with 11 goals. She also led Canada to victory and won the gold medal.

She competed in three more world championships, and she won gold medals in 1992, 1994, and 1997 after competing in those competitions. It was a contentious decision to exclude her from the squad that competed in the inaugural women’s Olympic hockey competition, which took place in 1998. 1999 was the year that she participated in her last international event. In addition to being honored by several halls of fame, James is widely regarded as the pioneering superstar of the current era of women’s ice hockey.

In 2008, she was one of the first three women to be admitted into the Hockey Hall of Fame of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). In 2010, she was one of the first two women to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Her induction into the Sports Hall of Fame of Canada took place in the year 2009. In the year 2021, James was honored with a place in the Order of Hockey in Canada.

James is now serving as the Senior Sports Coordinator at Seneca College in Toronto, in addition to his role as co-owner and General Manager of the Toronto Six of the Premier Hockey Federation, which he has held since the year 2022. Donna, who was raising Angela and her two half-sisters by herself, received financial aid from the government to do so. In the Flemingdon Park district of Toronto, they resided in a townhouse that was receiving government subsidies.

Both as a bookkeeper and at the concession stand of the local arena, Donna gained experience in the field.[8]: Because she struggled with depression and mental illness, her oldest daughter, Cindy, had two part-time jobs when she was 16 years old to assist the family in meeting their financial commitments. Even though they often clashed when they were younger, Angela was very loyal to her sister Kym. While she was growing up, her father was never a continuous presence in her life. He did not give financial support to the family, but he was always accessible to her if she needed his assistance.

Even though she was a mixed-race kid with a white mother and sisters, Angela was often subjected to insults. This was especially true because she was one of the few Black children living in Flemingdon Park. She was known to get into confrontations over the insults regularly, which helped her develop a confrontational mindset that she took over into the game of hockey. Even though they were kind to Angela’s sisters, her maternal grandparents never acknowledged her as a kid.

In a short amount of time, James acquired an interest in sports. As a token of his appreciation for her first holy communion, her godfather presented her with a baseball bat and glove. As a young girl, she was a talented athlete who excelled in the sports of hockey, baseball, and synchronized swimming. Due to the limited chances available to female hockey players in the 1970s, her mother encouraged her daughter to concentrate on swimming instead.

Her love, on the other hand, was hockey, and ever since she was in kindergarten, she was making a habit of playing ball hockey with the guys in the neighborhood. When James was eight years old, she participated in her first organized hockey game, which was a boy’s house league at Flemingdon Park. That was only after her mother threatened to take legal action against the referees who were opposed to her presence.

Throughout the Flemingdon Park league, James was unbeatable. She began off in the novice age group, which is comprised of children aged seven to eight years old; however, because her skill level was far greater than that of her colleagues, she was promoted to the atom age group and then to the peewee age group, which is comprised of children aged eleven and twelve. It was because of the jealousy of the parents of the boys who were participating in the Flemingdon Park league that James’s involvement in the league came to an end halfway through her second year.

Particularly irritated by the fact that his son was being eclipsed by a girl, the president’s son was a member of James’s team. He gave the order to amend the policy of the league so that it would no longer allow females to participate. Annunciation, a Catholic organization located in the Don Mills neighborhood, was the only one of James’s options for a female league that was even somewhat conceivable. Because her mother did not have a car that she could use to bring her to the games, she would take her to and from the games at the different rinks via bus.

Due to the limited size of the girls’ hockey program, teams needed to consist of players from all age groups to field entire rosters. James did not participate in the bantam age group at any point in his hockey career; instead, he began his play with the Newtonbrook Saints. At the time, she was just 13 years old, and she was competing against ladies who were 16 years old or older. As of that moment, the Saints were competing at the Senior C level, which was the fourth-highest level of women’s hockey in the Toronto region.

Due to her preoccupation with hockey, her frequent involvement in fights, and her exposure to substances like alcohol and drugs, James paid little attention to her schooling and came dangerously close to dropping out of school. She was able to graduate from Overlea High School, which is now known as Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute, and pursue further education at Seneca College in Toronto as a result of the encouragement she received from Ross Dixon, who was the vice principal at Valley Park Middle School.
