Before entering the 2009 NBA draught and being selected by the Clippers, Griffin competed in college basketball for the Sooners for two years prior to his entry into the draught. As a result of breaking his left kneecap in the final preseason game of 2009, he required surgery and was sidelined for the entirety of the 2009–10 season. Griffin made his debut in the NBA the next season as a rookie. During his first year in the league, he was honored with multiple accolades, including selection as an All-Star, victory in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, and recognition as the NBA Rookie of the Year. In 2011, Sports Illustrated ranked him as one of the top 15 rookies in NBA history in terms of overall greatness.

When they were kids, Griffin was close with Sam Bradford, who would later become a quarterback in the NFL. The building that Blake and Taylor played basketball in was owned by Bradford’s father, who was also a basketball coach.  Prior to deciding to put his primary attention on basketball, Griffin dabbled in a variety of sports, including baseball (where he played first base) and football (where he played wide receiver, safety, and tight end).
