Kevin Harvick Biography and Career:
Kevin Michael Harvick is a stock car racing driver from the United States of America. He was born today, December 8, 1975. His most recent full-time competition was in the NASCAR Cup Series, where he drove the No. 4 Ford Mustang for Stewart–Haas Racing until recently. In addition to winning the Cup Series title in 2014, Harvick also won the Xfinity Series championship in 2001 and 2006, as well as the Daytona 500 in 2007.
As of right now, Harvick has won nine Cup Series races at Phoenix Raceway, making him the all-time leader in this category. While Harvick’s 60 Cup victories place him tenth in the history of the series, his 121 total national series victories now place him in third place all-time in NASCAR history, behind only Richard Petty and Kyle Busch, respectively. In the year 1992, Harvick started his career in NASCAR.
There are just six drivers who have won a championship in both the Cup Series and the Xfinity Series. He is the third of only six drivers to have won a championship in both series. Additionally, he is the fifth of 36 drivers to win a race in each of NASCAR’s three national series. For the last several years, Harvick has been working as a commentator for NASCAR on FOX, where he has been responsible for calling Xfinity Series events. Harvick has been under contract to call Cup Series races for Fox beginning in 2024, even though he has retired from racing.
Harvick was the former owner of Kevin Harvick Incorporated, a racing team that competed in the Xfinity Series from 2004 to 2011 and the Truck Series from 2001 to 2011. The firm fielded cars in both series. Many people in the media have referred to him as “the Closer” and “Happy Harvick” on various occasions. In 1992, Harvick started competing in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series as a part-time driver for late models while he was still a student in high school.
He participated on the North High School wrestling team during the offseason racing, and in his senior year, he was able to qualify for the CIF Central Section championship in the weight class that he had been competing in. Not only did Harvick play baseball, but he also played basketball, football, and soccer. Immediately after his graduation, he enrolled at Bakersfield College with the idea of studying in design. However, he ultimately decided to drop out of school to pursue a career in racing on a full-time basis.
In 1995, Harvick first competed in the Craftsman Truck Series at the Mesa Marin Raceway, which is located in his hometown of Bakersfield. He began the race in the No. 72 car that was owned by his family and finished 27th overall. During the next season, he competed in four races while driving the No. 72, and his best result was eleventh at Mesa Marin. He signed a contract with Spears Motorsports in the middle of the 1997 season to drive the No. 75 car, and he finished ninth twice during the season.
The next year, he competed in a full schedule, and he finished 17th in points while earning three top-five finishes. Harvick also advanced to the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series, in 1997. In 1998, Harvick won five races on his route to the Winston West Series title while driving for Spears. It was at this time that Harvick received his championship. The coverage of the NASCAR Winter Heat Series at Tucson Raceway Park that ESPN2 provided during the winter of 1997/1998 was the occasion that brought him his first significant exposure on a national scale.
During the 1999 season, he competed for Liberty Racing. He drove the No. 98 Porter Cable Ford and finished 12th in points with six top-five finishes. It was in the Kmart 200 at Rockingham Speedway on October 23, 1999, when Harvick made his debut in the NASCAR Busch Series. He was driving the No. 2 Chevrolet. The engine would fail, causing him to start in 24th place and finish in 42nd place. During the year 1999, he would only compete in one race. After signing with Richard Childress Racing in the year 2000, Harvick would drive the No. 2 Chevrolet for the whole of his debut season in the Busch Series.
After failing to qualify for the second race of the season at Rockingham, Harvick went on to win the NASCAR Busch Series Rookie of the Year award. He finished with three victories, eight top-five finishes, and sixteen top-ten finishes, and he also finished in third place in the points standings. Childress intended to run Harvick in the No. 2 Chevrolet in the Busch Series on a full-time basis in 2001. At the same time, Childress intended to prepare Harvick for the Winston Cup Series by allowing him to compete in up to seven races in the No. 30 Chevrolet.
In 2002, he intended to compete against Harvick by way of a full program. Harvick started his first Cup race the following week in the Dura Lube 400 at Rockingham, taking the position lost by Earnhardt’s demise in the renumbered No. 29 Chevrolet. Childress’s plans were altered as a result of the circumstances surrounding the death of Dale Earnhardt on the last lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001.
Only three weeks after Earnhardt’s passing, on March 11, 2001, Harvick won his first Winston Cup race in his career by barely beating Jeff Gordon in the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. This victory came only three weeks after Earnhardt’s passing. In the race, he won by a margin of barely six one-thousandths of a second (.006). To express his appreciation and admiration for Earnhardt, he drove backward on the track after he had won the race. He did this by holding three fingers in the air outside the driver’s window.
At the time, this was the record for the earliest career start for a driver to win a race in the Modern Era. Since then, the record has been eclipsed by Jamie McMurray and Trevor Bayne, both of whom achieved the feat in their second starts, and subsequently by Shane van Gisbergen in 2023, who won his first race. At the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, he triumphed in the Cup race for the second time in his career.
As the season came to a close, he ended with two wins, six top-five finishes, and sixteen top-ten finishes. In 2001, Harvick finished ninth in the points standings and was given the NASCAR Rookie of the Year Award. He also placed ninth in the overall points standings. In addition, he was the first driver to win the Busch Series title while simultaneously competing full-time in the Winston Cup Series and finishing in the top ten. He accomplished this feat by finishing in the top ten while competing in both series.
After the season, Harvick would finish with six pole positions and 69 starts. He would make 35 starts in the Cup Series, one appearance in the Winston Series, 33 starts in the Busch Series, and one start in the Craftsman Truck Series at Richmond International Raceway for Rick Carelli. By the end of the 2002 season, Harvick had devoted his whole season to competing in the Cup Series, and he would only start four races in the Busch Series.
When Harvick started the 2002 season, he made his first Daytona 500 start on the outside pole next to Jimmie Johnson. However, his day was cut short when he caused an 18-car incident on lap 148 when he was running second behind Jeff Gordon. As a result, he finished in 36th position. The incident that occurred after the race at Bristol Motor Speedway resulted in him receiving a fine later on in the season.
Harvick was also punished for harsh driving in a Truck race at Martinsville. During the race, he made a statement on his radio claiming he purposely spun out driver Coy Gibbs, which prompted NASCAR to quickly remove him from the competition. Harvick was penalized for his actions. Even though it was broadcast on the radio that he did, Harvick lied in an interview that took place after the race, claiming that he did not intentionally damage Gibbs.
The next day, Harvick was disqualified from the Cup Series race, and Kenny Wallace was appointed to take his place. In addition, he was given a fine of $35,000 and put on further probation (he had previously been placed on probation for the incident with Kyle Biffle). In the Pepsi 400 at Daytona, Harvick was able to recover and capture the pole position for the first time in his career in the Winston Cup. It was at Chicagoland Speedway where he accomplished his third Cup victory later in the season.
