Lou Carnesecca Biography and Career:
Luigi P. Carnesecca, born in the United States on January 5, 1925, is a former collegiate basketball coach who previously worked at St. John’s University. Additionally, Carnesecca coached professionally, serving as the head coach of the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association for three seasons. In 1992, Carnesecca was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Throughout 24 seasons (1965–1970, 1973–1992), he led the St. John’s men’s basketball team to 526 wins and 200 defeats. The flamboyant “Looie,” as he was affectionately nicknamed by fans and the media, led the team to the postseason in every season he coached, including a run to the Final Four in 1985. The United States Basketball Writers Association honored him by bestowing the National Coach of the Year title in 1983 and 1985.
Carnesecca is well-known for his wry sense of humor and the sweaters that have become his trademark. The ancient Alumni Hall on the St. John’s University campus was formally dedicated and renamed Carnesecca Arena in November 2004. St. Ann’s Academy in Manhattan, today known as the intellectual and athletic powerhouse Archbishop Molloy High School, was where Carnesecca completed his secondary education.
After receiving his diploma, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served for the next three years during World War II. He was stationed aboard a troop carrier in the Pacific theater. After completing his service in the Coast Guard, he enrolled at St. John’s University and received his degree in 1950. In addition to that, he was a coach at the high school he had attended, St. Ann’s, until Jack Curran replaced him.
Carnesecca moved to the professional ranks shortly after starting his coaching career at St. John’s in 1965. Between 1970 and 1973, he served the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association as its head coach and general manager for three seasons. During the three seasons that Carnesecca was the baseball team’s manager, the club earned a berth in the playoffs in each of those seasons.
The 1971–1972 Nets finished third in the regular season but advanced to the ABA Finals, where the Indiana Pacers ultimately eliminated them in a best-of-seven series. In the 1972–1973 season, the Nets defeated the Memphis Tams to claim fourth place in the Eastern Division and the last playoff slot. This was accomplished even though the Nets had a record of 30–53.
On March 27, 1973, Carnesecca announced that he would return to St. John’s. Frank Mulzoff, his successor from three years earlier who had resigned following a campaign with a score of 19–7, was the one who he succeeded. He had two years left out of five on his deal with the Nets, and he was scheduled to get around $200,000 spread out over seven years.
Because his compensation at St. John’s was $22,000 per year, he incurred a financial loss due to the move. He said, “I’ve tried my hand at pro ball, and I’m very pleased with it.” However, when the chance presented for me to return to St. John’s, I jumped at the event.
Carnesecca was also an announcer for a significant portion of the 1980s for USA Network’s coverage of the annual NBA drafts. Carnesecca, the coach with the most victories in St. John’s history, has a record of 526-200 throughout 24 seasons, and he is hopeful that he will choose the Johnnies. Over the last three years, Pitino, now 70, has guided Iona University to victory in the MAAC regular-season championship game and the MAAC Tournament title game.
Iona’s season they ended with a record of 27 wins before losing to Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
According to a source, the president of St. John’s University, Rev. Brian Shanley, who came close to hiring Pitino at Providence 12 years ago and has been “relentless” in his pursuit of the great coach, is a big reason for the search of Pitino by St. John’s.
It has been claimed that St. John’s is working toward finalizing a contract with Rick Pitino in the days ahead. FOX Sports reports that the institution intends to formalize an agreement with the Hall of Famer and that the decision now rests with the player on whether to accept the offer. After falling to UConn in the first NCAA tournament round on Friday night, the Iona Gaels concluded their season with an overall record of 87-63.

Brian is hampered by his inability to prepare enough and his lack of game-related instincts. From what I’ve been told, I have some sympathy for a guy who is a good person. However, he is still working on strengthening the foundations of his basketball game. I hope he gets there quickly.
LovThere is a friendly voice and an aggressive demeanor; nonetheless, the emphasis should be on understanding the components. I hope everything gets better soon and he has better future success.
