Nicola Roberts is an English singer and songwriter who rose to prominence after appearing on the ITV reality talent programme Popstars: The Rivals. This show was responsible for the formation of the female pop group Girls Aloud and was hosted by Simon Cowell. Nicola Roberts had a significant amount of success while performing with Girls Aloud. The band issued a total of five studio albums and charted twenty songs, all of which reached number one on the UK Top 10 Singles list. After seven years of working together, the band broke up so that each member could concentrate on their own profession (they briefly reunited later but split again eventually).
Around this period, Roberts developed her own cosmetics business and released her highly acclaimed solo album Cinderella’s Eyes. Both endeavours received widespread praise from music critics. In addition to this, she was included in a BBC documentary titled Nicola Roberts: The Truth About Tanning, in which she pushed (together with British MP Julia Morgan) for the prohibition of tanning beds for anyone under the age of 18.
In addition to writing lyrics for her own record, she contributed to the albums of both Little Mix and Cheryl Ann Tweedy, as well as writing songs for Cheryl Ann Tweedy. In the year 2020, she was crowned the winner of the reality competition The Masked Singer UK, which was broadcast on ITV, and she was offered a starring part in the West End production of the musical comedy City of Angels. Nicola Roberts was born on October 5th, 1985 in the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire, however she spent most of her childhood in the town of Runcorn, Cheshire. Frankie, the youngest of her sisters, and Harrison and Clayton, both the youngest of her brothers, are her sisters’ younger siblings.
Just seventeen years old when she was born, her mother was a teenager when she gave birth to her. Her father had a career with the Royal Air Force, but he left that position to work for Ford Motor Company so that he could better the family’s financial situation. Her mother started working in the photography industry for the same reason as she did. Nicola attended St. Chad’s High School and was a strong student there; despite this, she was not really interested in her academic pursuits. Instead, her passion centred upon music from the very beginning of her life.
She decided to pursue her passion for the performing arts by enrolling in the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. In addition to that, she started going to auditions and competed in a number of other events. In the beginning of their career, Nicola Roberts led her own female band, which she called The 5 Musketeers, and they played at a local disco. When Nicola was just 16 years old, she tried out for the ITV reality talent programme Popstars: The Rivals in the year 2002. Originally, she was unable to crack the top ten; however, when another competitor, Nicola Ward, was eliminated from the competition, she was allowed to return as a wild card participant.
In the end, she was selected to become a member of the band that was known as Girls Aloud, making her the second participant to do so. Sarah Harding, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh, and Cheryl Cole were the group’s other members in addition to Cheryl Cole.
After the band’s first song, “Sound of the Underground,” debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, Polydor Record offered them a recording contract shortly after the single’s release. Sound of the Underground (2003), What Will the Neighbours Say? (2004), Chemistry (2005), Tangled Up (2007), and Out of Control (2009) were the five studio albums that Nicola and the group produced between 2003 and 2009. (2008). Each of these albums was awarded the platinum certification.
During that time span, the band had 20 straight singles that were in the top 10 in the UK, including four that were number one, in addition to two albums that were number one in the UK. In addition to this, they took home the Brit Award for “Best British Single” for “The Promise.” By May of 2009, the group had amassed a combined worth of 25 million pounds and had established themselves as one of the most successful reality television acts.
In addition to this, it achieved two records that were recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records: the first was for the Most Successful Reality Television Group, and the second was for the Most Consecutive Top 10 Entries in the UK by a female group. After completing Girls Aloud’s “Out of Control” tour in July 2009, the members of the band decided to pursue separate careers and broke up the band. As part of the documentary television series The Passions of… Girls Aloud that aired on ITV2 in 2008, Nicola Roberts introduced a new cosmetics brand known as Dainty Doll, which was designed specifically for young women with fair complexion.
Nicola Roberts has fair skin and red hair, so in the beginning, when she was trying to seem more appealing, she would deepen her skin tone using fake tan. It was in 2010 that she made her debut in the investigative documentary Nicola Roberts: The Truth About Tanning, which was shown on BBC Three. In the show, she investigated the tradition of tanning in the UK. In it, she explained the dangers linked with using tanning beds and described her own experience with faking a tan with self-tanning products.
With another member of the National Assembly for Wales, Julie Morgan, she was a supporter of a measure that would have prohibited those under the age of 18 from using tanning beds. Beat of My Drum was her first solo song, which she released in June 2011, and Lucky Day was her second solo single, which she released in September 2011. Both singles were well received by critics, with the first reaching its highest place in the UK charts at number 27, and the second reaching its highest position at number 40.
Cinderella’s Eyes, her first album under her own name, was released in September of 2011. The album was met with favourable reviews from music reviewers and reached position number 17 on the album chart in the UK. It contained the well-received song “Sticks and Stones,” which was about her being bullied, and it dealt with the subject (she was bullied for her looks and red hair and was called the ugly one). The third single, titled “Yo-Yo,” was met with more praise from reviewers but was unsuccessful financially.
On the television show Styled To Rock that aired on Sky Living in 2012, she participated as both a judge and a coach. The recording artist Rihanna served as an executive producer for the competition reality show, which featured fashion designers competing against one another to design the greatest clothes for a music act (or acts) each week. She collaborated with other songwriters to produce the song “Going Nowhere” for the first studio album of the British girl group Little Mix (which was created in 2011).
Something New was first made available to the public by the Girls Aloud band in the month of November in 2012. The song, which is the official charity record for Children in Need, has gone all the way up to the number two place on the UK Singles Chart. Later on in the same month, the band celebrated their tenth year in the music business by releasing their second greatest hits collection titled Ten. ITV aired a documentary special titled “10 Years of Girls Aloud” in December 2012, which chronicled the band’s journey from the early days of their formation to their comeback after a hiatus of three years.
During their sixth and last performance tour in 2013, which was called Ten – The Hits Tour, the band members decided to officially part ways. Little Mix’s second studio album, titled Salute, was released in 2013, and Roberts contributed to the writing of two songs for it: See Me Now and They Just Don’t Know You. She also worked with her friend and fellow ex-member of Girls Aloud, Cheryl Ann Tweedy, on songwriting, and the two of them contributed four tracks to Tweedy’s fourth studio album, Only Human, which was published in 2014. It’s About Time, Throwback, Goodbye Means Hello, and Yellow Love were the four songs that were featured in the set.
After a hiatus of four years, Nicola Roberts and Cheryl reunited in 2018 to collaborate on the lyrical content of two of Cheryl’s songs, namely Love Made Me Do It and Let You. She will play the character of Avril/Mallory in the musical comedy City of Angels, which will premiere on the West End in 2020. In 2018, she also took part in the reality singing competition The Masked Singer, which was shown on ITV, and she emerged victorious.
She contributed to the composition of lyrics for Little Mix’s first album DNA, which went on to sell more than 700,000 copies throughout the globe, and as a result, she was presented with a disc award. Since Nicola Roberts struggled with hypoglycemia, she was restricted in the kind of foods that she could consume. Her ex-boyfriend followed and harassed her from 2012 until 2017, at which point a permanent restraining order was issued against him, prohibiting him from coming within 100 yards of Ms. Roberts or any member of her family.
As part of her role as ambassador for the organisation Barnardos Young Supporters, she makes frequent appearances at events for children and the schools in which they are enrolled. Nicola Roberts may have been the less tabloid-friendly member of Girls Aloud due to her pale skin, striking red hair, and quiet personality; however, due to her songwriting skills, eclectic taste, and effortlessly cool demeanour, her solo career was significantly more interesting than those of bandmates Nadine Coyle and Cheryl Cole.
Roberts was born in Runcorn, Cheshire in 1985. She started singing when she was 11 years old, went to the dancing school in her hometown, and created her own female band, the Five Musketeers, before she tried out for the ITV talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. She didn’t make it to the live stages at first, but she was brought in as a substitute when another competitor, Nicola Ward, dropped out of the competition. She ended up coming in second place, which earned her a spot in the band that would later become Girls Aloud.
Over the course of seven years, the five-piece band achieved a remarkable 20 consecutive Top Ten hits (including three chart-topping singles), six Top 20 albums (including Chemistry, on which Roberts became the only member to receive a sole writing credit, for “It’s Magic), and a Brit Award for Best British Single (“The Promise”) before the members decided to pursue various solo projects. Roberts presented the BBC3 documentary The Truth About Tanning, which was about the risks of tanning beds, and she became an enthusiastic backer of legislation that would restrict unsupervised tanning beds for children. Roberts established a cosmetics brand for girls with fair complexion called Dainty Doll.
In 2010, she became the third member of the group to establish a solo career when she signed a contract with Universal and began working on tracks with the likes of Joseph Mount from Metronomy, Dragonette, and Diplo. This marked the beginning of her solo career. Her first single, “Beat of My Drum,” was released a year later, and it was followed by the album Cinderella’s Eyes, which served as the parent album for the single.
