Rob Blake Biography and Career:

Robert Bowlby Blake is a former player and current executive in Canada’s professional ice hockey league. He was born on December 10, 1969. The Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League have appointed him as their general manager. After being chosen by the Kings in 1988, he spent his first 11 seasons with the club, during which time he led the Kings to the Stanley Cup Finals, won the James Norris Memorial Trophy, and served as team captain for five seasons. All of these accomplishments came during his time with the Kings. Blake was a part of the Colorado Avalanche club that won the Stanley Cup in 2001 after being acquired by the Avalanche in a trade in 2001.

It was the only Stanley Cup he ever won when he was a player, but in 2014, as a member of the Kings’ front office, he won the Cup again. After playing with the Los Angeles Kings for two more seasons, Blake signed with the San Jose Sharks in 2008 and served as the team’s captain until the end of the 2009–10 season. In 2014, after being nominated for the first time in 2010, Blake was finally inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. In the same year when an injury limited Blake’s playing time to only six games, the Kings sent team captain Wayne Gretzky to the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline in 1995–1996. This left the Kings without a leader to serve as club captain.

Before the start of the 1996–1997 season, Blake was given the honor of being the 11th captain in the history of the squad. After collecting a career-high 23 goals and 50 points during the 1997–98 season, Blake was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy, given to the National Hockey League’s finest defenseman. After posting 59 points in his third season, Blake helped guide the Kings to the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals, where the Montreal Canadiens ultimately eliminated them in five games. Blake’s 59 points helped propel the Kings to the Finals. The year after that, in 1993–1994, Blake set a new career best with 48 assists and 68 points, but the Kings could not make the playoffs. After spending the previous 11 seasons in Los Angeles, After being dealt to Colorado late in the 2000–01 season, Blake had an instant impact for the Avalanche, earning 10 points in the last 13 games of the regular season.

After playing a second-round series against his previous team, the Kings, in the 2001 playoffs, he won his first and only Stanley Cup with the Avalanche, adding 19 points in 23 playoff games. After that, he retired from professional hockey. Blake was named to the NHL’s second All-Star team after finishing the regular season with a point total of 59 after participating in 67 games. After spending the previous five years with the Colorado Avalanche, the club ultimately decided not to exercise the player’s contract option for the 2006–07 season, which resulted in his becoming a free agency. On July 1, 2006, he re-signed with the Los Angeles Kings, the club he had previously played for, for two years at a salary of $6 million per year.

After having a season in which he scored 51 points while playing for Colorado the year before, Blake’s performance dropped significantly when he moved back to Los Angeles. His tally of 34 points in the 2006–07 season was his lowest since the 1996–1997 season. Despite this, on September 28, 2007, only days before the start of the 2007–08 season, Blake was given the club’s captaincy, succeeding Mattias Norstrom, who had previously held the position but had since moved on to play for the Dallas Stars. On June 18, 2010, Blake officially announced that this would be his last season playing professional hockey.

The Los Angeles Kings announced on August 11, 2014, that they would retire Blake’s number 4 jersey on January 17, 2015, and the date was set. After that, he was chosen to be a part of the Colorado Avalanche’s 20th anniversary squad, celebrated on December 8, 2015. Blake re-signed with the Avalanche in the off-season on July 1, 2001, agreeing to a five-year deal with the Avalanche that included an optional sixth year. Blake scored his most excellent total with the Avalanche in earning 56 points in 75 games, which ranked third amongst NHL defensemen, in the 2001–02 season. However, the Avalanche’s attempt to defend the Stanley Cup was unsuccessful as the Detroit Red Wings defeated them in the Western Conference finals. Blake was the top defenseman for the Avalanche. Blake was chosen for the NHL’s second All-Star team for the third season, continuing his streak of success.

On October 29, 2002, during the next season of 2002–03, Blake tallied his 500th career point while competing against the Minnesota Wild. Blake finished in second position among Avalanche defensemen with 45 points in 79 games, which led to him ranking fifth in the vote for the Norris Trophy. He was named for the NHL All-Star Game in each of his first three seasons with the Avalanche, and in the 2003–04 season, he was picked as a starter for the NHL All-Star Game held in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He skated the last game of the season with the Avalanche, finishing the year with 46 points to place ninth in the NHL among defensemen.

Blake returned to the Avalanche for the last season of his contract in 2005–06, having missed the previous season due to the lockout during the 2004–05 NHL season. He had 51 points for the Avalanche in 81 games, marking the seventh time in his career that he exceeded the 50-point level in scoring. He maintained his scoring presence among the Avalanche. On April 3, 2006, he scored his 200th career goal in the National Hockey League while playing against the Chicago Blackhawks. This made him only the 17th defenseman in the history of the NHL ever to accomplish this milestone.

Blake was about to become a free agent in the 2001 off-season, so the Kings decided to sell him to the Colorado Avalanche on February 21, 2001. The Kings also sent Steven Reinprecht to the Avalanche at the same time. In return, the Kings received Adam Deadmarsh, Aaron Miller, Jared Aulin, and a first-round selection, which they used to choose Dave Steckel.
