Shannon Noll is an Australian singer and songwriter born September 16, 1975. He first gained widespread attention in 2003 when he finished in second place on the first season of Australian Idol. As a result of this accomplishment, Sony BMG signed Noll to a recording contract. He has recorded five albums that debuted in the top 10, including two that reached number one and were certified several times platinum. The top 10 positions on the ARIA singles chart were occupied by Noll’s first ten singles, including three number-one. He is the first male Australian artist in the history of Australian charts to have ten consecutive songs that peaked in the top ten.
The first song released by Noll, “What About Me,” was awarded a four-platinum certification and became the single that sold the most copies in Australia in 2004. Noll has achieved the third most significant degree of certification and sales for an Australian Idol participant, having received 17 platinum certifications and three gold certifications, as well as having over 1.3 million combined albums and single sales in Australia. In addition to winning five ARIA No. 1 Chart Awards, Noll has been nominated for six ARIA Music Awards, including the award for Best Pop Release for his second studio album, Lift.
Also, during the years 2005 and 2007, he was awarded the MTV Australia Video Music Award for Best Male Artist for three years in a row. Noll’s contract with Sony was terminated in 2010, and he subsequently signed with Universal Music Australia. Noll was born on September 16th, 1975 in the city of Orange, in the state of New South Wales, to parents Neil and Sharyn Noll. He was the youngest of three children and was raised in the rural community of Condo Bolin, which is located in the central western region of New South Wales. His elder brothers are Adam and Damian.
Noll spent his whole infancy and adolescence on the farm that his family operated, where they not only farmed grain crops but also reared sheep and cattle. Noll was an enthusiastic participant in school performances and liked taking acting lessons when he was in school. After finishing school, Noll moved to Sydney, where he played Australian football (AFL) and met his future wife, Rochelle Ogston. Shearing sheep was one of the many jobs that Noll did once he became an adult. Cypress is the name of the band that he and his brothers founded (named after the Cypress pine timber mill where they rehearsed).
Noll was responsible for the vocals and also played the guitar. The band performed in several rural pubs in the outback of Australia for their various engagements. The band mostly played cover songs, but each member also contributed original material to the album. In 2001, Noll’s father Neil was killed in a farming accident, which resulted in Noll and his brothers inheriting the property from their grandfather. During two years of catastrophic drought, Noll decided to lease out the farm so that he could survive off of the money he received from the government for the drought and odd jobs he did on the farm of a friend. In his album Lift, Noll wrote a song called “Now I Run” that was dedicated to the memory of his father.
“Hold Me in Your Arms” by Southern Sons was the song that Noll sang during his successful 2003 audition for the first season of Australian Idol. His performance left an impression on all three judges, notably Marcia Hines, who told Noll that she had just found “a voice,” and Ian Dickson, who assured Noll that “Australia will adore you” after hearing his audition. Noll has made it all the way through to the final twelve after the semi-final round of competition.
Due to the fact that another competitor Cosima De Vito withdrew from the tournament, he was finally able to make it all the way to the championship round with Guy Sebastian. The Sydney Opera House was the location of the grand final, which took place on November 19, 2003. After the tallying of the votes cast by the audience, it was revealed that Guy Sebastian had emerged victorious. Not long after Idol, Noll inked a contract with BMG Australia for a total of five albums; this label would subsequently combine with Sony. After that, in January 2004, he joined eleven other candidates who had placed in the top twelve of the Australian Idol competition on their respective national tours.
During the same month, Noll issued his first single, which was a cover version of the song “What About Me” by Moving Pictures. On the ARIA Singles Chart, it debuted at number one and remained there for four weeks in a row, making it the chart’s overall winner. In 2004, “What About Me” was the single that sold the most copies in Australia, earning it a four-times platinum certification for the number of copies it sold (280,000). Moreover, the song peaked at number two in Ireland and number 10 in New Zealand respectively.
That’s What I’m Talking About, Noll’s first studio album was released on February 9, 2004, and it quickly rose to the top of the ARIA Albums Chart, with a total of 131,680 copies sold in its first week of release. The album, which included a range of musical genres including pop, rock, and country, was certified five times platinum for sales of 350,000 copies and was in the top 10 charts for a total of fourteen weeks, including four weeks at number one.
The second single, titled “Drive,” is a fast-paced rock music that was written by Canadian singer Bryan Adams. It peaked at number four in Australia and was awarded the platinum certification for sales of 70,000 copies. Covering “Learn to Fly” by boy band A1, “Learn to Fly” by Noll was the third and final single to be released from the album That’s What I’m Talking About. It reached number one on the Billboard singles chart and was awarded the gold certification for sales of 35,000 copies. In the 2004 ARIA Music Awards, Noll was nominated for two awards, one of which was Highest Selling Single for the song “What About Me,” and the other was Highest Selling Album for the album That’s What I’m Talking About.
In April of 2004, in order to promote the record, he went out on his very first solo headlining tour, which was termed The Overdrive Tour. Up Close with Shannon Noll was a television special that featured Noll and was shown on Network Ten in August of 2004. The program was presented by Ian Dickson. At the end of 2004, the Nine Network had initiated contact with Noll in the hopes of having him re-record the Australian cricket song “C’mon Aussie C’mon” with new lyrics. His rendition reached number two on the charts and was later awarded the platinum certification. All of the money made from the sale of the single was donated to the Good Start Breakfast Club, which is a community program run by the Red Cross and was established to guarantee that all Australian schoolchildren begin their day with a nutritious meal.
Early in 2005, Noll embarked on a composition tour that took him to the United States as well as the United Kingdom, where he met up with Desmond Child, Dianne Warren, and Wayne Hector to work on his second album. Later on, Noll came to the conclusion that he would not use any of the material that he had written with Child. He also decided against using a song that Warren had written for him because he preferred his collaborations with local Australian songwriters. For the Australian leg of Bryan Adams’ Room Service Tour, which took place in February and March of 2005, Noll served as the opening act.
Lift, his second studio album, was released on October 16, 2005, and immediately went to the top of the charts. The album featured a wide range of issues, including discovering love, dying, overcoming obstacles, and believing in oneself, and 11 out of the album’s 13 songs were co-written by Noll. It was certified three times platinum after having sold 210,000 copies, earning it a spot in the top ten for nine consecutive weeks. The album’s first song, titled “Shine,” likewise had a number-one debut and was later awarded the platinum certification. The album’s title track and second single, “Lift,” reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was awarded the gold certification.
After some time, it ended up being selected as the theme music for the Australian edition of the reality series The Biggest Loser. Two further singles were taken from the album and released: “Now I Run,” which reached number six on the charts, and “Lonely,” which reached number eight on the charts. In the 2006 ARIA Music Awards, Noll was nominated for two awards: one was for Highest Selling Single for the song “Shine,” and the other was for Best Pop Release for the album Lift. In order to raise awareness of the record and its accompanying tour, he started his second solo headlining tour in January of 2006 and called it the Lift Tour.
While Noll was offered a role in the movie King of the Mountain, which was based in some ways on the life of the Australian racer Peter Brock, he turned down the opportunity. Noll parted ways with the Sydney-based management company Caplice Management in September 2006 and signed a contract with the New York-based management business Worldwide Entertainment Group (WEG). After putting on showcase concerts for music business executives in the past without any success, it was believed that Noll’s action was a part of his endeavors to achieve success in the United States.
During the following month, he served as the opening act for the American rock band Live on their tour of Australia. After spending eleven weeks in a row in the top ten, Noll and Natalie Bassingthwaighte released a cover of the Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush duet “Don’t Give Up” in December of 2006. This version of the song was performed by Noll and Bassingthwaighte. The song reached number two on the charts and was later certified platinum. It was included in the compilation album Home: Songs of Hope & Journey, which was created in order to collect money for the depression research efforts carried out by beyondblue. It served as the first single for the album. At the ARIA Music Awards the following year, “Don’t Give Up” received Noll a nomination for Highest Selling Single, which she ultimately did not win.
Noll made his debut in the theatre as Parson Nathaniel during the Australian tour of the stage musical, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The Battle of the Worlds, in September of 2007. Crank It Up, Noll’s third studio album, was released on September 15, 2007, and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart. The album has now been certified platinum. Earlier in same year, Noll made the trip across the pond to the United States to collaborate on the album with a number of composers and producers, including Richard Marx, Luke Ebbin, and Richie Sambora, guitarist for Bon Jovi.
The first song from Turn It Up was the anthemic rock track “Loud,” which made its debut at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Although the third song, “Everyone Needs a Little Help,” did not chart, the second single, “In Pieces,” reached number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. To promote the album and his third solo headlining tour, which he dubbed the Turn It Up Tour, Noll set out on the road in June 2008 for the first time.
An episode of the Australian edition of “This Is Your Life” was devoted to Noll’s honour and recognition. On September 27, 2008, he published his first compilation album titled No Turning Back: The Story So Far, which made its debut at number seven on the Billboard 200 chart. The CD included Noll’s 10 most successful hits in addition to five brand new tracks. Noll’s rendition of “Summertime,” originally performed by Brian Melo, was the album’s lone single and reached a high position of number 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In order to spread awareness about the new record and his tour, he started the No Turning Back Tour.
Noll played the role of Parson Nathaniel once again for the UK tour of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Adaptation of The War of the Worlds, which took place in June 2009. The publication of Noll’s second compilation album, titled What Means the Most, in the UK to coincide with the tour did not result in the album entering any charts. The CD included songs from all of Noll’s prior albums. With the release of the album in the UK came the reissue of two of Noll’s previously released singles, namely “Shine” and “Now I Run.” The following month, he made his way back to Australia for his acoustic In the Raw Tour, which also included an unique question and answer session with the show’s presenter, Nick Bennett.
