Steve Bannon, the full name Stephen Kevin Bannon, was a senior adviser and top White House strategist for U.S. President Donald Trump from 2017 to 2018. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on November 27, 1953. Bannon grew up in a large Irish Catholic household in Richmond, Virginia. His father progressed through the ranks at a phone business, moving from lineman to middle management.

Before enrolling at Virginia Tech, Bannon attended an all-male Catholic military school in Richmond. There, he graduated in 1976 with a B.A. in urban affairs and held the office of student body president. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after getting his degree, rose to the rank of lieutenant, served aboard a destroyer, and was appointed as the Pentagon’s special assistant to the head of naval operations.

Bannon completed a master’s degree in national security studies at Georgetown University while serving in the military in Washington, D.C. After leaving the service in 1983; he went to Harvard Business School (M.B.A., 1985), where he later worked at Goldman Sachs in mergers and acquisitions. Bannon, who focuses on media and entertainment, moved to Los Angeles.

After working for Goldman Sachs for over three years, he co-founded the banking company Bannon & Co. Samsung, MGM, Polygram Records, Italian media tycoon, and politician Silvio Berlusconi were a few of its clientele. Bannon’s firm acquired a share in five television programs, including the then-relatively-new Seinfeld, as part of the negotiations to sell Castle Rock Entertainment from Westinghouse to Ted Turner in 1993. This investment would result in a sizable financial gain for Bannon’s business.

Bannon continued to work in entertainment-related financing after Bannon & Co. was sold to Société Générale in 1998. He also served as co-executive producer on the 1999 movie Titus, a cinematic version of Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare. With the release of In the Face of Evil: Reagan’s War in Word and Deed, Bannon began his career as a writer, director, and producer of conservative-leaning documentaries in 2004.

Bannon’s family had supported the Democratic Party when he was growing up, but after becoming disenchanted with Jimmy Carter’s administration, he turned to Ronald Reagan and conservatism. The Undefeated (2011), a laudatory biography of Sarah Palin, and Occupy Unmasked (2012), a film about the Occupy Wall Street movement, were two movies he produced. Bannon also became deeply disdainful of the financial and political establishment, including both those on the left and those in the Republican establishment, during this time.

The Government Accountability Institute was established by Bannon and Peter Schweizer in 2012 to investigate prominent politicians to uncover wrongdoing. The institute disseminated the findings of its investigations through well-known publishers and other media outlets, as it did with Schweizer’s divisive book Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich (2015).

Bannon and Andrew Breitbart, the creator of the controversial, anti-establishment, conservative website Breitbart.com, had become friends in the early 2000s. When Breitbart passed away unexpectedly in March 2012, just before the website was set to relaunch, Bannon took over as executive chairman and actively shaped Breitbart News’ editorial stance.

With Breitbart, Bannon, who self-identified as a populist, provided a platform for the “alt-right” (alternative right) movement, a loose association of relatively young white nationalists (who essentially disavowed racism but celebrated “white” identity and lamented the alleged erosion of white political and economic power and the decline of white culture in the face of nonwhite immigration and multiculturalism), white supremacists, extreme libertarians, and neo-Nazis. Breitbart was labeled as racist, sexist, and xenophobic by its detractors.

Breitbart supported Donald Trump’s rebellious bid for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination under Bannon’s leadership. Bannon was credited with providing discipline and a sharper emphasis on the message to Trump’s then-faltering campaign when he was appointed executive director in August 2016.

Trump appointed Bannon as senior adviser and top White House strategist after he shocked political analysts and pollsters by beating his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. Trump’s fans on the far right applauded Bannon’s selection, while many on the left and several mainstream Republicans opposed it out of concern for the influence of the far-right fringe in the White House.

Bannon was promoted to regular membership on the National Security Council’s “principals committee” in the second week of the Trump administration. This appointment drew criticism from various quarters due to Bannon’s inclusion as a political strategist in security meetings and the removal of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the director of national intelligence as regular members.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the director of national intelligence were reinstalled as permanent members of the principal’s committee early in April as part of a restructuring that saw Bannon removed from it. Bannon’s presence was among the most significant in the government throughout the first six months of the Trump administration. He was primarily seen as the impetus behind Trump’s contentious choices to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change and to put a “travel ban” on immigration from several Muslim-majority nations.

The president’s other top advisors and cabinet officials, most notably senior adviser Jared Kushner (Trump’s son-in-law) and national security adviser H.R. McMaster, were at odds with Bannon because of his unwavering emphasis on economic nationalism. After Trump reacted slowly to and subsequently blamed “both sides” for the murder of a counterprotester at a rally by white nationalists, white supremacists, and neo-Nazis on August 12, 2017, in Charlottesville, Virginia, criticism of Bannon from outside the government got louder.

Many observers believed that Bannon’s position in the White House helped legitimize far-right extremist organizations like those gathered in Charlottesville. There had been talking of Bannon leaving the administration just before the Charlottesville protests started. Bannon belittled other Trump advisers, called white nationalist organizations “clowns,” and undermined the president’s recent bellicose warnings to North Korea in response to that country’s aggressive pursuit of nuclear weapons in remarks published on August 16 by The American Prospect, a liberal publication.

On August 18, 2017, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Steve Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve’s last day,” despite the fact that it was generally believed Bannon had been pushed to quit.
Bannon swiftly assumed control of Breitbart again, aiming to utilize his position outside of government to further Trump’s agenda, with whom he was still in contact.

By supporting the campaigns of anti-establishment opponents in Republican primary elections, Bannon also made clear his aim to unseat establishment legislative Republicans, including Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell. In the Republican primary election to select a replacement for the U.S. Senate seat representing Alabama that had been vacated by Jeff Sessions when he was appointed U.S. attorney general, he actively supported the candidacy of controversial former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, which gave this project a jumpstart.

Moore won the Republican primary despite Trump’s unexpected backing for Luther Strange, a former Alabama attorney general and the nominee of the party’s establishment. However, during the general election campaign in December 2017, claims that Moore had pursued many young girls romantically and engaged in inappropriate behavior with several of them, including claimed sexual assault, while he was in his 30s came to light. Both Bannon and Trump actively supported Moore. Both experienced serious electoral defeats when Alabama voters rejected Moore and elected Doug Jones as the first Democrat to the Senate in more than 20 years.

The alleged remarks Bannon made about Trump’s adult children included in Michael Wolff’s book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, in which White House officials say Trump is hopelessly unqualified to be president, were much more detrimental to Bannon’s political future. The encounter between Donald Trump Jr. and Russians during the 2016 presidential campaign was allegedly described by Bannon as “treasonous” and “unpatriotic.”

Early in January 2018, the furious president attacked Bannon, claiming that he had nothing to do with his election and that when Bannon was sacked, “he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.” He also started referring to Bannon as “Sloppy Steve.” Bannon swiftly regretted his comments and praised Trump as a “great man,” but his political standing was rapidly lost. Rebekah Mercer, the daughter of hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, who has long provided financial support for Bannon’s political endeavors and is a co-owner of Breitbart, distanced herself from Bannon’s “recent actions and statements.” This was the beginning of the end for Bannon. Bannon was forced to resign from his job at Breitbart by January 9, and his Sirius XM radio program was canceled.

Later, Bannon became associated with We Build the Wall, a charity that raised funds to build a wall along the southern border of the United States. It has raised more than $25 million by August 2020. However, he and three other men were arrested that month on charges of scamming donors. Just before leaving office in 2021, Trump released Bannon.

Bannon played a crucial role in overturning the election results after Trump made baseless and repeated claims that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen from him by voter fraud. This included trying to persuade Vice President Mike Pence to delay or prevent the certification of the election on January 6, 2022, at a joint session of Congress. Bannon was subpoenaed to testify before the House’s Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol in part because he remarked on a podcast on January 5, “All hell is going to break loose tomorrow,” the day before the attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters.

Bannon at first declined to appear before the committee or provide any papers, claiming his role as a former presidential advisor and Trump’s assertions of executive privilege. Bannon’s claim, however, was challenged since, among other reasons, he had left Trump’s official White House staff years before the assault.

The Justice Department charged Bannon with two counts of criminal contempt of Congress in November 2021 due to his failure to comply with the congressional subpoena; the violations carried a potential fine of $200,000 and a two-year prison sentence. Around a week before his trial, on July 10, 2022, Bannon notified the House committee that he was ready to speak and that Trump had freed him to testify. But less than two weeks later, Bannon was found guilty of both counts of contempt. Bannon was given a four-month jail term and a $6,500 fine on October 21.
