Alex Bowman Biography and Career:
Alex Michael Bowman is a professional stock car racing driver and team owner from the United States. He was born on April 25, 1993, in the United States. In addition to competing full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, where he drives the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Hendrick Motorsports, he also competes part-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, where he drives the No. 17 Chevrolet Camaro for HMS, and he competes in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, where he drives the No. 7 Chevrolet Silverado for Spire Motorsports.
Alexander Bowman Racing is a Dirt Midget and Sprint car racing team that he owns and operates. After capturing the pole position in 2018, 2021, and 2023, he is famous for making a record-breaking six straight front-row starts in the Daytona 500. This record spans from 2018 to 2023. With Bowman the Showman being the most common of his numerous nicknames, he is recognized by a variety of names. Denny Hamlin referred to him as “just a hack” after a late-race crash at Martinsville in 2021 eliminated him from the running for the victory.
Because Bowman won the race by using two tires during a pit stop under a late-race yellow, Kyle Busch said that Bowman was “all luck, no skill” after the race that took place in Las Vegas in 2022. Having been born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Bowman began his racing career in the year 2000, when he was only seven years old, by competing in United States Auto Club (USAC) competitions while driving quarter midget cars on short tracks in the states of Arizona and California.
As of the year 2006, he had collected 165 feature victories and had won nine national championships. During the year 2008, he was victorious in both the USAC National Focus Midget championship and the California Dirt Focus Midget title. He earned 11 victories during the year. He received the title of USAC National Midget Rookie of the Year in the year 2009. An accident that occurred during a USAC race in February of 2010 resulted in Bowman incurring injuries, including a broken collarbone and a rib break. It is still Bowman’s intention to compete in some races with a midget.
He won races at Salem Speedway, Winchester Speedway, Iowa Speedway, and Kansas Speedway throughout the year. In 2012, he accepted a full-time position with Cunningham Motorsports as a development driver for Penske Racing. He transferred to the American Racing Association (ARC) for the year. At Mobile International Speedway, he also earned the pole position for the first-ever ARCA Mobile 200 race.
Bowman had his first appearance at the national level of NASCAR racing in the year 2012 when he competed for Turner Motorsports in the Nationwide Series at Chicagoland Speedway. This was his first race, and he finished seventeenth. Towards the close of 2012, he also raced for RAB Racing in the Nationwide Series at Kentucky Speedway and Phoenix International Raceway, as well as for Turner at Dover International Speedway.
Announcing in January 2013 that Bowman would be contending for Rookie of the Year honors in 2013, it was confirmed that Bowman would be running the whole Nationwide Series season for RAB in 2013. He would go on to earn the Nationwide pole position for the first time in his career at the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 in Texas. The organization decided to dismiss Bowman ahead of the season-ending race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, even though he would go on to earn another pole position at Texas later in the time of the season.
After the season, Bowman finished six times in the top 10. On November 11, Bowman became a member of JRM and drove the No. 88 car for the 2016 Xfinity season. He competed in nine races. In every race except two, he finished in the top 10 and earned the pole position in Michigan. The fact that Bowman was successful did not prevent him from having a difficult time securing sponsorship that would allow him to compete for JRM on a full-time basis.
Bowman joined GMS Racing in 2017 to fill in for Justin Haley, who was unable to compete at the track due to his age. Haley was competing in the Truck Series event at Atlanta in the No. 24 car. Bowman competed in Charlotte and Phoenix races while driving the No. 42 Xfinity car for Chip Ganassi Racing during October and November. Bowman won his first NASCAR National Series race at Charlotte after dominating the latter section of the race after a late restart. This was Bowman’s first race in the whole series.
Following the announcement that Bowman will be driving the No. 7 car for Tommy Baldwin Racing during the whole of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, which took place on January 30, 2015. Because he was involved in a collision with many vehicles during his dual race, he was unable to qualify for the Daytona 500. After material from a blown tire made its way into the engine of his vehicle, which was located in New Hampshire, the vehicle caught fire.
He could go back to the track. When he was on the penultimate lap, he blew a tire, which caused him to collide with the wall before the caution signal was sent. On the 21st of January 2016, Bowman announced his departure from Tommy Baldwin Racing, resulting in the loss of his Sprint Cup ride. As an interim driver for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who would miss the balance of the 2016 season due to concussion difficulties, Bowman made his comeback to the Cup Series at Loudon in the New Hampshire 301. He was driving the No. 88 for Hendrick Motorsports. Bowman’s return to the Cup Series was a step in the right direction.
On lap 272, Bowman had a tire blowout and struck the wall in turn one, which resulted in his finishing in 26th position. This occurred even though he had been racing in the top ten, reaching as high as eighth. Throughout the remaining races in the 2016 season, Bowman and Jeff Gordon would take turns driving the No. 88 vehicle. At Phoenix, Bowman earned his first pole position of his career. Bowman led the most laps in the race with 197, and with six laps remaining, he attempted to make a move on Matt Kenseth that would have been the winning pass.
Kyle Busch hit Bowman from behind when he was overtaking Kenseth, which caused Kenseth to spin out of the race. Bowman responded by finishing sixth in the race. Richard Hendrick announced in December 2016 that Bowman would be driving the No. 88 for the 2017 Advance Auto Parts Clash at Daytona. Although Earnhardt Jr. had already qualified to compete in the race, Hendrick chose to let Bowman drive the car out of gratitude for Bowman’s ability to fill in for him in 2016.
Despite being in a head-to-head battle with Kyle Busch for second place, Bowman ended up finishing third in the race. When Earnhardt Jr. announced that he would be retiring in the spring, he voiced his support for Bowman to take over the No. 88 car for the 2018 season. Hendrick Motorsports officially announced Bowman’s appointment as the driver of the No. 88 vehicle for the 2018 season on July 20.
