Not only has he participated in the NASCAR Truck Series in the past, but he has also been a part of the ARCA Menards Series, the ARCA Menards Series East, and the ARCA Menards Series West on several occasions. After completing his high school education at Hillsborough High School in Tampa, Almirola went on to seek a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Central Florida. His subsequent performance in 2003 included five pole positions. With his participation in the NASCAR Drive for Diversity initiative in 2004, he was one of the first drivers to take part in the program. In addition, he became a development driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, entering into a collaboration with Reggie White, a former player in the National Football League.

During the season, Almirola competed at Ace Speedway, where he won two races and ultimately finished 11th in the points standings. The next year, in 2005, he won five additional races at the track, made his debut in the Truck Series with Morgan-Dollar Motorsports, and finished in the top ten in two of the four races he competed in. As a participant in the JGR development program, Almirola competed in the Craftsman Truck Series in 2006 while driving the No. 75 Chevrolet that was sponsored by Spears Manufacturing and driven by Spears Motorsports.

In the end, he finished the season in 18th place, having started every race and finishing in the top ten three times, including his best performance of ninth. The eleventh-place result he achieved at Dover International Speedway was his best.

Additionally, he was a test driver for J. J. Yeley and Denny Hamlin, who were teammates of Gibbs, at times when their schedules for the Nextel Cup and Busch Series conflicted with one another. Additionally, he achieved his first pole position of his career at the Milwaukee Mile, when he qualified for the No. 20 car belonging to Denny Hamlin, who was a competitor in the race. Even though Hamlin ended up winning the race, Almirola was given credit for his maiden victory in the NASCAR Busch Series. This was because Almirola was the driver that began the race. Since Almirola had already departed the track by the time the team celebrated their triumph, he did not take part in the festivities that took place after the race.

Soon after, he initiated the process of requesting his release, and subsequently, after the sale of Ginn Racing, he joined Dale Earnhardt, Inc. After that, he entered into a contract with Key Motorsports to drive their No. 40 Chevrolet Impala SS in the Nationwide Series for a total of five races over the season. He made his comeback to the Truck Series, driving for Billy Ballew Motorsports in the No. 15 Graceway Pharmaceuticals-sponsored Toyota Tundra. In October of 2009, he submitted documentation to the Superior Court of North Carolina saying that he was involved in a dispute with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc. over a violation of contract. Between the years 2009 and 2010, Almirola was a member of the team that raced in seven Sprint Cup races. However, his No. 8 Chevrolet vehicle was parked due to a lack of funding. As a result of the settlement reached outside of court, the case was dismissed one month later.

The No. 09 Cup series Chevrolet Impala that he was going to race for Phoenix Racing in 2010 was going to be his full-time job. The first race that Almirola competed in was the Camping World Truck Series, and he won it at Dover International Speedway. He then went on to win another race at Michigan International Speedway, this time by fending off Kyle Busch and Todd Bodine. In terms of points, Almirola would come in second place, after Bodine.

If Jimmie Johnson needed to depart for the birth of his daughter, Hendrick Motorsports appointed Almirola as a backup driver for the No. 48 squad. Having Almirola was not required.
