On January 17, 1982, in the city of Chicago, Illinois, Wade was born to his parents, JoLinda and Dwyane Wade Sr., as the second of their two children. The unconventional spelling of Wade’s first name, which he shares with his father, was inherited from Wade’s grandmother.  JoLinda already had two children when she married Wade’s father, so they had Dwyane and Wade’s older sister Tragil together. JoLinda also had Dwyane before she married Wade’s father. After four months of parenthood, Wade was raised by his mother alone.

Wade had a challenging upbringing on the South Side of Chicago, where he spent his early years. Following the divorce of his parents, JoLinda was awarded custody of both of their children. JoLinda battled drug addiction and was frequently caught in criminal behavior, both of which led to her incarceration. When Tragil was only eight years old, she deceived her younger brother by telling him that they were going to the movies, when in reality, she was taking him to live with their father and stepmother.

After his father moved the family to Robbins, Illinois, Wade did not see his mother for the next two years, despite the fact that he occasionally went to see her before the move. In order to avoid the temptations of gangs and drugs, Wade turned to the sports of basketball and football. Wade attributed the majority of his success to Tragil’s ability to point him in the right direction.  Wade spent his childhood looking up to Michael Jordan and trying to play the game as he did. On October 14, 2001, as Wade’s career as a basketball player was beginning to flourish, JoLinda made a solemn vow to make significant changes in her own life. She claims that she has not used any illicit substances since the year 2003.

Oak Lawn’s Harold L. Richards High School was Wade’s alma mater, where he excelled in both basketball and football. However, it took him longer to achieve success in basketball, despite the fact that he excelled right away as a wide receiver and also played as a backup quarterback.  After gaining four inches by the beginning of his junior year, he established himself as the leading scorer on the team with an average of 20.7 points and 7.6 rebounds. On February 3, 2007, Marquette put his jersey into retirement.

Although it is typically required for student-athletes to have graduated before their jerseys can be retired, an exception was made for Wade.  Wade led the Marquette Golden Eagles in scoring with an average of 17.8 points per game (ppg) and led Conference USA in both steals per game with 2.47 and 2-point field goals made with 205; he averaged 6.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Marquette finished the season with a record of 26–7, which was their best finish since the 1993–1994 campaign. As a result of his selection by the Miami Heat with the fifth overall pick in the 2003 NBA draught, Wade became the only player from Marquette to be selected in the first round.

Wade continued to get better throughout his senior season when he posted an average of 27 points and 11 rebounds per game. Under his direction, the Bulldogs compiled a record of 24–5 and qualified for the Class AA Eisenhower Sectional. Wade set new records for the number of steals made and points scored at the school (676). (106).  He acknowledged the significant role that coach Jack Fitzgerald played in his life and career.

Due to Wade’s struggles in the classroom, only Marquette, Illinois State, and DePaul offered him basketball scholarships to play for them.  Wade made his decision to play college basketball at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, under the direction of coach Tom Crean. The NCAA’s Proposition 48, which established the academic eligibility requirements for participation in Division I sports, kept Wade off the field during his first year as a collegiate athlete.

Because of his hard work and the assistance of a tutor, he was able to improve his academic standing to the point where he was qualified to participate when his sophomore year began. Once again, Wade finished with 21.5 points to lead the school in scoring, and the Golden Eagles finished the season with a record of 27–6. On March 8, 2003, just three days after JoLinda was released from prison, she witnessed Wade play basketball for the first time in five years as Marquette defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats to win the Conference USA championship.

The score of the game was 70–61. As a result of his contributions, the Golden Eagles qualified for the Final Four for the first time since the 1977 season in which they won the national championship. The Associated Press (AP) subsequently named Wade to the All-America First Team, making him the first basketball player from Marquette to receive this distinction since 1978. Wade is also the first player in any sport to receive this honor since 1978.

Wade’s performance in the Midwest Regional final garnered a lot of attention from people all over the country. He led Marquette to an upset victory over the number one-seeded Kentucky Wildcats, scoring 29 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing out 11 assists. He also had a memorable breakaway dunk during the game, which helped Marquette win 83–69 and advance to the Final Four for the first time since 1977.  In the history of the NCAA tournament, Wade’s triple-double was only the fourth to ever be recorded. The Golden Eagles’ finish at No. 6 in the AP Poll was Marquette’s highest in the poll since the 1976–1977 season when they were ranked No. 1. Wade received the Most Valuable Player award for the Midwest Regional. Because of his performance, he is expected to be selected highly in the NBA draught.

As a direct consequence of this, Wade did not complete his senior year in order to participate in the 2003 NBA draught. Wade rapidly established himself as a productive player, averaging 16.2 points on 46.5% shooting while also contributing 4 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.  The Heat started out with a record of 5–15, but they gradually improved their record to finish with 42–40 and qualify for the playoffs.  Wade delivered outstanding performances throughout the postseason, especially in the series against the Indiana Pacers that took place during the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Wade received a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team in 2004 and finished third in the voting for Rookie of the Year. His selection to the team was unanimous (after LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony). He finished in the top five among rookies in several statistical categories, including second in field goal percentage, second in steals, third in scoring, fourth in assists, and fourth in minutes played. In addition, he had the second-best field goal percentage among rookies.
