Prior to earning his degree from Weston College in 2011, he had his education at Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar. Shelley is the oldest of six children overall, with two biological brothers, two step-sisters named Anabelle and Louisa, and four half-brothers. Harriet, his younger sister, was killed in 2017 when she was struck by a car and passed away as a result of her injuries.  Shelley received his BTEC Extended Diploma in Graphic Design from Weston College in Weston-super-Mare, which he attended from 2010 through 2011. She performed the song “Toxic” at her audition, but she and the boy band Triple J were both removed during the boot camp stage. In spite of this, Rough Copy was forced to pull out of the competition, which resulted in an additional spot becoming available in Louis Walsh’s category for judges’ houses. The producers of The X Factor reached out to Triple J’s manager, Blair Dreelan, and made an offer for the group to return to the competition on the condition that Shelley would be added to the three-piece lineup. The deal was approved by all sides, and the band, which was now a four-piece, changed their name to Union J and moved on to the judges’ houses along with another recalled group called Times Red.  After that, Union J made it to the live shows, where they came in fourth place, behind Christopher Maloney, Jahméne Douglas, and James Arthur, who ended up winning the competition.
