After Ja Rule was let go from TVT, he kept in touch with DJ Irv, who was working at the time as an executive producer for Def Jam. Ja Rule was a member of Def Jam. DJ Irv, who is now known as Irv Gotti, was recruited to work as an A&R for the record company, and he was successful in securing a recording contract for Ja Rule with Def Jam.  In 1995, he had his first performance as a solo artist on Mic Geronimo’s “Time to Build” alongside Jay-Z and DMX, who were both in the beginning phases of their respective careers at the time. Later on, he was featured alongside The Lox, DMX, and Tragedy Khadafi on the track “Usual Suspects,” which was included in Mic Geronimo’s second studio album, Vendetta, which was released in 1997.

In addition, he appeared in a cameo capacity in the music video for “Walk In New York,” which was created by the Queens-based hardcore rap group Onyx. Later on in the year 1997, Def Jam agreed to let Irv Gotti operate his own record label under the name Murder Inc. Records. In addition to continuing to make guest appearances on songs by other artists, such as Method Man, Redman, Nas, DMX, LL Cool J, and Dru Hill, Ja Rule was promoted to the position of being the flagship artist for the label. Later, he was featured on Jay-hit Z’s single “Can I Get A…” from 1998, for which he had previously written the hook. After Jay-Z heard the track, he asked for it to be used for himself instead of Ja Rule’s debut single, which had been set for release.

During this time, he performed under the stage name Jah, which was a small modification of his own name. Returning to the Ja Rule moniker, his first single, “Holla Holla,” was out in March 1999. The song was an instant success, reaching its highest position on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 35. Venni Vetti Vecci, Ja Rule’s debut album, was released in 1999 and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 with 184,000 copies sold in its first week. This success was fueled in large part by the popularity of Holla Holla. Because of how successful “Holla Holla” was, the album was eventually certified platinum in the United States.  Later on, a new version of “Holla Holla” featuring Jay-Z, Vita, Cadillac Tah, Black Child, Memphis Bleek, and Busta Rhymes was released.

The song “Between Me and You,” which featured Christina Milian and was Ja Rule’s second single, was released in June of 2000 as the first single from his second studio album. It went on to become his first major crossover hit, receiving airplay on the Top 40 radio stations and peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The following single from the album, “Put It on Me,” was released in December of 2000 and went on to become one of the biggest hits of 2001. It peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and was Vita and Ja Rule’s first top 10 hit. The song “Put It on Me” also featured Lil’ Mo and featured both of those artists. Also, the music video for “Put It on Me” spent one week on the MTV Video Countdown chart, and it was the first music video to ever be removed from the countdown on BET’s 106 & Park after being featured there for more than sixty days. Moreover, the video achieved the number one spot on BET’s Notarized: Top 100 Videos of 2001 list.

Rule 3:36 was Ja Rule’s second studio album. It was released on October 10, 2000, and it took a very different stylistic path than Venni Vetti Vecci did. Ja Rule shifted away from his almost trademark hardcore hip-hop sound and towards a more mainstream-oriented pop-rap sound. As a result, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 276,000 copies sold in its first week, becoming Ja Rule’s first album to debut at number one. The Recording Industry Association of America later awarded the record with a triple-platinum certification after it was released (RIAA). Blood in My Eye, Ja Rule’s fifth studio album, was released on November 4, 2003, under the Murder Inc. label. The label changed its name to “The Inc.” three days after the album’s release. Blood in My Eye was Ja Rule’s fifth studio album overall.

The content was originally conceived of as a simple mixtape, but it was ultimately published as an album in order to meet Ja Rule’s contractual obligation to Murder Inc. to release at least one album every year. This album signaled a return to the hardcore style that Ja Rule had utilized in his early career. It was labeled as a “hate” album directed at numerous rappers, including 50 Cent, G-Unit, Eminem, Proof, Dr. Dre, DMX, Busta Rhymes, and others. This album also marked a return to the hardcore style. It gave rise to one major single, “Clap Back,” which was recognized as the best “Fat Tape” song of the year at the Source Music Awards and peaked at number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It reached its highest position on the Billboard Top 200 at number six, selling 139,000 copies in its first week of release, and by the year 2008, it had sold over 468,000 copies in the United States. R.U.L.E., Ja Rule’s sixth studio album, was released in November of 2004, making its debut at number seven on the Billboard 200 chart and selling 166,000 copies in its first week of availability. On the Billboard Hot 100, the lead track “Wonderful,” which also featured Ashanti and R. Kelly, reached its highest position at #5. The street anthem “New York,” which featured Fat Joe and Jadakiss, was the next single to be released, and it peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The third single was a love song called “Caught Up,” which featured Lloyd but did not fare well on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. On January 14, 2005, the RIAA awarded R.U.L.E. with the gold certification, and by October 2007, the album had already sold 658,000 copies.
