Kathryn Bigelow Biography and Career:

Kathryn Ann Bigelow is a well-known American director. She was born on November 27, 1951, in the United States. Films such as Near Dark (1987), Point Break (1991), Strange Days (1995), K-19: The Widowmaker (2002), The Hurt Locker (2008), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), and Detroit are examples of the diverse variety of genres that she has explored in her work (2017). Bigelow made history when she won the Academy Award for Best Director for her work on The Hurt Locker. She also became the first woman to win the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing and the BAFTA Award for Best Direction for the same film. With the film Strange Days, she made history by becoming the first woman ever to receive the Saturn Award for Best Director.

In addition to this, Time magazine recognized her as one of the 100 persons in the world who had the most influence in the year 2010. Bigelow was the only child of her parents, Gertrude Kathryn (née Larson; 1917–1994), who worked as a librarian, and Ronald Elliot Bigelow (1915–1992), who worked as a paint factory manager. Bigelow was born in San Carlos, California. Her mother’s family was originally from Norway. She received her high school education at Sunny Hills, which is located in Fullerton, California. The painting was Bigelow’s primary medium of exploration during his formative years as an artist. She began her studies at San Francisco Art Institute in the fall of 1970 and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree four years later in December 1972.

She was admitted into the Independent Study Program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City while she was a student at the San Francisco Art Institute. For a period of time, Bigelow led the life of a destitute artist. During this time, she shared the loft of performance artist Vito Acconci with painter Julian Schnabel. She played a little part in the video Prisoner’s Dilemma which was directed by Richard Serra (1974). Bigelow and Philip Glass collaborated on a real estate business in which they purchased run-down flats in the downtown area, made necessary repairs, and then resold the properties for a profit.

Bigelow continued her education by enrolling in the master’s program in cinema production at Columbia University, where she focused on film theory and criticism while working toward her master’s degree. Her teachers included Vito Acconci, Sylvère Lotringer, and Susan Sontag, as well as Andrew Sarris and Edward W. Said, and she collaborated with Lawrence Weiner and the Art & Language group.  In addition to that, she was a professor at the California Institute of the Arts. During her time spent working for Art & Language, Bigelow published an article titled “Not on the Development of Contradiction” in the Art & Language magazine known as The Fox.

She also began production on a short film titled “The Set-Up” (1978), which was praised by the director Milo Forman, who was at the time teaching at Columbia University. Bigelow later used this film as part of the requirements for her Master of Fine Arts degree at Columbia.  The Set-Up, a short film by Bigelow, is a deconstruction of violence in the film that lasts for twenty minutes. In the film, “two guys fighting each other as the semioticians Sylvère Lotringer and Marshall Blonsky dissect the pictures in voice-over,” this conflict is depicted on screen. During the course of the film’s all-night production, Bigelow requested that her cast members physically assault and attack one another.  The Loveless (1981), a movie about bikers, was her first as a director of a feature-length film. She collaborated with Monty Montgomery on the project.

Willem Dafoe made his debut in the position of leading man in this production. After that, in 1987, she directed the film Near Dark, which she had also co-written the story for with Eric Red. It was with this movie that she started what would become a lifetime passion for playing with film conventions and genres. There were three performers in the primary cast that were previously seen in the movie “Aliens.”  She directed a music video in the same year for the song “Touched by the Hand of God” by New Order. The music video is a parody of the visual imagery associated with glam metal. Bigelow’s following works, including Blue Steel, Point Break, and Strange Days, “merged her philosophically oriented manipulation of speed with the market needs of popular film-making.”

Ron Silver portrayed a psychopath who preys on Jamie Lee Curtis’ character, a rookie police officer who is being followed by the killer in the film Blue Steel. Similar to his work on Near Dark, Eric Red contributed to the writing of the screenplay. The film was shot on-site in New York owing to financial reasons and because Bigelow doesn’t “like movies where you see a poverty apartment and it’s the size of two football fields.” The initial financing for the film was set at $10 million. Bigelow’s next film was the cult classic Point Break (1991), which starred Keanu Reeves as an FBI agent who poses as a surfer to catch the “Ex-Presidents.”

The “Ex-Presidents” are a team of surfing armed robbers led by Patrick Swayze who wear masks of Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, and Jimmy Carter when they hold up banks. Bigelow followed Blue Steel with Point Break (1991). Point Break was Bigelow’s most profitable “studio” film, taking approximately $80 million at the global box office during the year of its release; however, it is still one of her lowest-rated films, both in commercial reviews and academic analysis. This is due to the fact that the film focuses on a group of young adults who are involved in a dangerous activity. The film was criticized for allegedly adhering to a number of the worn-out tropes and cliches associated with the action genre. Furthermore, it was said to have strayed far from the stylistic content and subtext of Bigelow’s prior works.

She directed one episode of the television series Wild Palms in 1993, and she also acted in the series as Mazie Woiwode in one episode (uncredited). Next, Bigelow took the helm of The Hurt Locker, which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2008, went on to be a part of the Closing Night lineup at the Maryland Film Festival in May 2009, and was made available in theatres across the United States in June 2009. Because it did not make its debut in Los Angeles in a run that qualified for the Academy Awards until the middle of 2009, it was eligible for consideration. The movie, which is about the time after the invasion of Iraq, was given a “fresh” rating of 97% by the critics that were aggregated by Rotten Tomatoes and garnered “universal acclaim”. Cameo appearances are made by Guy Pearce, David Morse, and Ralph Fiennes in the movie, which also stars Jeremy Renner, Brian Geraghty, and Anthony Mackie.

She was the first woman to ever win the Directors Guild of America award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures, and she also garnered a Golden Globe nomination for her direction of the film. At the 63rd British Academy Film Awards in 2010, she has given the prize for Best Director, and the film The Hurt Locker was given the award for Best Picture.  For her work on “The Hurt Locker,” she made history by becoming the first woman to win the Academy Award for “Best Director.”She was just the second woman in the history of the United States to be considered for the distinction, making her the fourth woman overall to be considered for the honor. Her ex-husband James Cameron, who directed the science fiction movie Avatar, was one among the competitors in this category.

Bigelow took many people in the audience by surprise when, during her acceptance speech for the Academy Award that she had won, she did not mention the fact that she was the first woman to ever be awarded the Oscar for Best Director. Bigelow has, in the past, steadfastly declined to refer to herself as either a “woman filmmaker” or a “feminist filmmaker.”  Writers such as Mark Salisbury, who questioned in The Guardian, “Why does she make the kind of movie she makes?” have been among many who have criticized her for the violent content of her films. and by Marcia Froelke Coburn, who queried in the Chicago Tribune, “What’s a kind woman like Bigelow doing making sexy violent vampire movies?” Bigelow has been criticized for her work in both of these areas.
