Lita Ford Biography and Career:

Lita Rossana Ford was born on September 19, 1958.  is a guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who was born in England and now lives in the United States. After playing lead guitar for the all-female rock band Runaways in the late 1970s, she went on to have a successful glam metal solo career that reached its apex in the late 1980s. She is considered one of the pioneers of the glam metal genre. The track “Shut My Eyes Forever,” which was released in 1989 and featured Ozzy Osbourne, is still considered to be Ford’s most popular song. It peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Ford was born in London, England to parents Harry Lenard Ford and Isabella Benvenuto; her father was of British descent, while her mother was of Italian descent.

She migrated to the United States with her family when she was in the second grade, and they eventually settled in the city of Long Beach in the state of California. At the age of 11, she started learning how to play the guitar after being influenced by Ritchie Blackmore’s work with Deep Purple. Her voice range is mezzo-soprano. In 1975, while Ford was just sixteen years old, recording mogul Kim Fowley approached her about becoming a member of the all-female rock band The Runaways. The band quickly signed a recording contract and put out their debut album the following year, in 1976. During their peak in the late 1970s, the Runaways were a successful recording and touring group. The band received a great amount of media attention, which contributed to their success.

The band eventually disbanded in April 1979, but until then, Ford’s lead guitar playing was an indispensable part of their style. 1977 saw the beginning of internal strife within the Runaways, who by that time had already broken company with producer Fowley, lead singer Cherie Currie, and bassist Jackie Fox. Despite these losses, the band continued on without Fowley, Currie, and Fox. Singer and guitarist Joan Jett desired for the band to adopt a punk rock style that was more influenced by the Ramones, although guitarist Ford and drummer Sandy West desired for the band to continue performing the hard rock-oriented songs for which it had been known.

The band finally disbanded in April of 1979 due to the fact that neither group was willing to compromise.  In 1982, Ford began his solo career by joining Mercury Records and getting his solo career off the ground. Out for Blood, her first album issued under her own name, was not successful commercially when it was released in 1983. The next year, in 1984, she released Dancin’ on the Edge, which was met with some degree of success and marked the beginning of a boom in Ford’s popularity. The single “Fire in My Heart,” which was included in Dancin’ on the Edge, made it into the top 10 of the charts in a number of nations other than the United States. The subsequent single, “Gotta Let Go,” enjoyed greater success and climbed all the way to the top spot on the Mainstream Rock charts. During an interview, Ford stated that she worked with RCA Records to make an album that was never published and that Tony Iommi did not perform on the album.

Ford reemerged with a more radio-friendly pop-metal sound after signing a record deal with RCA Records, hiring Sharon Osbourne Management, and restructuring their sound. Her self-produced album Lita, which she published in 1988, is considered to be her most financially successful work. Singles from the album included “Kiss Me Deadly,” “Back to the Cave,” “Shut My Eyes Forever,” and “Falling in and Out of Love,” which was co-written by Nikki Sixx of Motley Crüe. The album also featured a number of other singles. The ballad “Shut My Eyes Forever,” which was a duet with Ozzy Osbourne, continues to be her most popular single. It peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.  Stiletto was the album that followed in Ford’s footsteps after the success of Lita (1990). The songs “Hungry” and “Lisa” were released as singles by Stiletto (a song dedicated to her mother).

Despite this, the album did not achieve the same level of success as her prior offering. Ford’s next album, which was released in 1991 and was titled Dangerous Curves, had her most recent charting hit, which was titled “Shot of Poison.” Black, released on the German label ZYX Records, was Ford’s penultimate album before taking a significant break from recording. By the middle of the 1990s, Ford had shifted the focus of her attention away from her music profession and to the upbringing of her two young sons, which resulted in her music career becoming less of a priority. Ford did not release any new music until 2009’s Wicked Wonderland, which was his first album of new material since the release of Black in 1995.

In June of 2008, Ford reappeared with a new band featuring Stet Howland (W.A.S.P. ), who was playing drums. The band went by the name Kiss Me Deadly and played many warm-up performances in the weeks leading up to Rocklahoma in Pryor, Oklahoma. She played her final fourteen performances in June 2009 with a new band that featured former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, drummer Dennis Leeflang, and Deepfield bassist PJ Farley. The band toured the United States and Europe. On October 6, 2009, Ford made his return to the recording industry with the release of Wicked Wonderland, which was issued on the JLRG Entertainment label. Ford discussed her new work in an interview with ExclusiveMagazine.com, in which she said the following: “I just wanted to give someone the boot! I have no idea what people are talking about or what’s trending right now.

I simply desired the music to be intense. The lyrics are entirely autobiographical, and that sums it up nicely. That was never going to happen that you’d see me with sandals and armpit hair!”  In May of 2011, Ford made a promise to release a “real comeback album” later in the year with drummer Chuck Spradlin. She explained that 2009’s nu metal-inspired Wicked Wonderland was too much of a collaborative project with her ex-husband Jim Gillette, and that’s why it wasn’t a “real comeback album.” “I’ve heard from a lot of folks who say they want a genuine Lita Ford album, and I can see what they mean by that. They are going to get what they deserve “, it was reported that she had said at the time.

The record titled Living Like a Runaway was issued by SPV/Steamhammer Records in the month of June 2012. The record, which she had promised would be more similar to her earlier work, lived up to her expectations. The title is also intended to be celebratory in nature due to the fact that Ford had recently resolved disagreements with her former comrades in the Runaways.  Guitar Player magazine recognized her as a Certified Legend and gave her their award that year (2014). Patrick Kennison, the guitarist for Heaven Below, started playing with Ford and his band in November 2014. In 2016, Ford released Time Capsule, a collection of songs she had found on old analog tapes from the 1980s. The album featured recordings she had made with Billy Sheehan, Gene Simmons, Bruce Kulick, Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Dave Navarro, Rodger Carter, and Jeff Scott Soto.

Time Capsule was a collection of songs she discovered on old analog tapes from the 1980s. Around the middle of the 1980s, Ford was momentarily engaged to the guitarist for the band Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi. Iommi was a co-producer on her album The Bride Wore Black, which was shelved without being distributed to the public. In an interview that took place in 1989 with the magazine Kerrang!, Ford stated, “There’s a certain degree of ill blood between Tony and me. In the early 1990s, Ford shared her life with W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes for a brief period of time during their marriage. After the couple split, in 1994, Ford began a relationship with former Nitro frontman Jim Gillette; the couple wed despite having known each other for only two weeks at the time of their wedding. James and Rocco, their sons, are the couple’s only children.

Following the move, Gillette established a modest construction and real estate development company in Turks & Caicos, where the family eventually settled. Once he began discussions with TLC for a reality TV show, which was provisionally going to be called The Gillettes: An Extreme American Family, the marriage to Gillette started to fall apart and eventually ended. During an interview that took place in March 2011 on the website of Classic Rock Revisited, Ford stated that she had gone on a business trip to Los Angeles to discuss the show with the executives of TLC, and when she got home, she found that her husband and sons had stopped speaking to her.

Ford also alleged that Gillette turned the couple’s children against her by hinting that she was going to cause harm to them after she had gained a greater level of influence in the proposed series. She stated that this happened after she had accepted more responsibility for the project. She then asserted that Gillette had begun pushing her sons to physically assault her, a circumstance that ultimately led to her filing for divorce from her husband. Ford admitted in a radio interview in February 2011 that her marriage to Gillette had ended, putting a stop to any preparations for a television series that had been in the works. Ford became an advocate for the knowledge of parental alienation after the breakup of her relationship with Gillette, which led to their separation.
