Ray Lewis Biography and Career:

Raymond Anthony Lewis Jr., who was born in the United States on May 15, 1975, is a former professional football player who spent his whole 17-year career in the National Football League with the Baltimore Ravens. He played the position of middle linebacker for the Ravens (NFL). All-American honours were bestowed upon him during his time spent playing college football for the Miami Hurricanes. Lewis was selected by the Ravens in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft. When he retired following the 2012 season, he was the only active player from the Ravens’ first season still on the roster. Lewis was drafted by the Ravens. Lewis quickly established himself as a defensive leader and led the club in tackles as a rookie, the first of 14 times he would go on to lead the Ravens in tackles during his career with the organisation.

Lewis entered a guilty plea to the charge of obstructing justice in connection with the deaths of two men who were stabbed in the year 2000. The following year, he received the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award and led the Baltimore Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XXXV. He was a key member of the Ravens’ record-setting defence, which set a single-season record for the fewest points allowed (165) and the fewest rushing yards allowed (970) across all 16 games of the season. Lewis was also the first linebacker to earn the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award while playing for a team that ultimately ended up victorious in the game. He was the second linebacker overall to win the award.  Lewis became the sixth different player to win the Defensive Player of the Year title more than once in 2003, as he took home the trophy for the second time.

Lewis made his comeback for the Ravens’ playoff run in 2012 after suffering a triceps tear that kept him out of action for the majority of the regular season. He went on to win his second Super Bowl in his final game as an NFL player. Lewis was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility on February 3, 2018, which was the fifth anniversary of the day that he played his final game. Lewis produced 14 solo tackles, four tackles for loss, an interception, and a sack in the first game of the 1999 regular season, which was played against the St. Louis Rams. Despite the loss by a score of 27–10, Lewis had a productive game.

In Week 2 of the season, when the Pittsburgh Steelers were the opponent, he finished with a team-high 13 combined tackles, which was a loss by the score of 23–20. In Week 3 of the season, when the Baltimore Ravens played the Cleveland Browns, Lewis recorded ten combined tackles and one sack in the team’s 17–10 victory.  During the game against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 4, Lewis ended with a total of 12 tackles, helping the team to a 19–13 victory in overtime. In week 5’s game against the Tennessee Titans, Lewis recorded 13 tackles and a safety despite the team’s loss by a score of 14–11. In Week 8’s game against the Buffalo Bills, Lewis recorded 14 tackles and a sack despite the team’s loss by a score of 13–10.

Both his career total of 2,059 combined tackles and his career total of 1,568 solo tackles are both records in the National Football League. He set both marks while playing with the Baltimore Ravens. Lewis is widely regarded as the best middle linebacker in NFL history due to the multiple honours he has received over the course of his career as well as his phenomenal football play.  He was a member of the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro team a total of ten times, and he holds the distinction of being one of the few players in NFL history to appear in a Pro Bowl in each of the last three decades (the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s). In addition to this, he is often regarded as the best defensive player of all time, as well as the best Baltimore Raven of all time. Raymond Anthony Jenkins is the eldest of five younger siblings. He was born in Bartow, Florida, which is located in Central Florida.

His mother was a young girl only 16 years old when he was born, and his father was missing from his life for the majority of it. His father had been a record-setting high school wrestler until he was sent to prison for drug-related offences, but other than that, not much was known about his life or his father.  When Lewis was a boy, he eventually became the older brother of four younger siblings, and as a result, he swiftly assumed the role of the head of the household. He assisted his sisters in doing their hair and made certain that his younger brother arrived on time at the daycare centre. When his father’s contact with him became less frequent, he gave up his last name and changed it to the surname of his mother’s lover, Ray Lewis, when he enrolled in Kathleen High School in Lakeland. This was done so that he would not be confused with his biological father.

He is the older brother of Keon Lattimore, who played running back for the University of Maryland in the past.  Lewis overcame his tiny size to become an All-American linebacker for the football team at Kathleen. He did this by using his intensity and instincts on the field.  In addition to that, he was an outstanding wrestler for the school and won the state championship for wrestling in Florida. In a later revelation, he stated that his stepfather had been highly aggressive towards his mother and that he had purchased a deck of 52 playing cards to begin his push-up routine in order to become stronger so that he could defend his mother. This was another factor in his decision to wear the number 52 shirt throughout his entire career.

Lewis attended the University of Miami, where he participated in the football programme and was a member of the Hurricanes football team.  He had an early impact on the Hurricanes as a freshman and was given the nod in the starting lineup for the team’s final five games. On his way to being named to the freshman All-American team, he recorded 81 tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss, and four pass deflections. Lewis was named to the first team of All-Americans and All-Big East after his performance in his sophomore year. Lewis finished first in the Big East with 153 tackles and contributed nine tackles for a loss, two sacks, and an interception to a Hurricanes team that had the best defence in the country and placed sixth in the rankings compiled by both the writers and the coaches.

Lewis had an even more successful junior year, as he was named to the All-American and All-Big East teams again. In addition, he finished as the runner-up for the Butkus Award, which is presented to the college football linebacker considered to be the best in the nation. Lewis concluded his junior year with 160 tackles, which was the second-greatest total in the history of the University of Miami football team, behind only Ed Weisacosky’s 164 in 1965. Despite playing for only three seasons, Lewis had the seventh most tackles in Miami Hurricanes history and was the leader in the Big East in tackles for the last two seasons he played. Following the conclusion of the 1995 season, Lewis made the decision to bypass his senior year of college and instead join the NFL draught.

Lewis was taken by the Baltimore Ravens, who were just starting their franchise’s first season, with the 26th overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft in 1996. After offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, who was chosen fourth overall in the same draught, Lewis was the second player the Ravens have ever selected in the draught. After much hard work, Lewis attended the University of Maryland University College and received his bachelor’s degree in Arts and Science in the year 2004. Lewis entered the 1996 NFL Draft as the highest-rated inside linebacker prospect, a year in which Kevin Hardy was regarded as the lone outstanding linebacker prospect.

Lewis was the fifth linebacker taken in the draught because scouts said he possessed speed, tackling ability, and intensity. Additionally, his ability to go into pass coverage was applauded, and he was lauded for his ability to play the position. However, the fact that he was undersized was seen by many as a possible disadvantage.  Lewis was awarded the title of AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in his first professional game, which was a 19–14 victory over the Oakland Raiders in Week 1. Lewis had seven tackles and had an uncommon interception during the game.  Lewis was named to the All-Rookie team by USA Today in 1996 after he led the NFL with 15 tackles for loss and led the Ravens with 110 tackles during that season.  At the end of his rookie season, he finished with two and a half sacks, six pass deflections, and an interception for the Ravens, who concluded the season with a record of 4–12 overall.
