Rick Adelman Biography and Career:

Richard Leonard Adelman is a well-known former professional basketball player and current coach from the United States. He was born on June 16, 1946. He was a head coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 23 seasons. The Portland Trail Blazers, the Golden State Warriors, the Sacramento Kings, the Houston Rockets, and the Minnesota Timberwolves have all had Adelman as their head coach at one point or another.

He is a member of the class of 2021 that will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Adelman was the son of Gladys (née Olsen) and Leonard Joseph “L. J.” Adelman, both born in North Dakota and worked as teachers and farmers. Adelman was born in the city of Lynwood in the state of California. Adelman played basketball while attending Pius X High School in Downey, California during high school. He became a college standout while attending Loyola University of Los Angeles, now known as Loyola Marymount University.

In the seventh round of the 1968 National Basketball Association draft, he was chosen by the San Diego Rockets, now known as the Houston Rockets. After spending his first two seasons in San Diego, he was selected by the Trail Blazers in the 1970 expansion draft. He went on to play his next three seasons in Portland after being traded there. In addition, he played for the Chicago Bulls, the New Orleans Jazz (e now in Utah), and the Kansas City/Omaha Kings now in Sacramento). 1975 was the year he retired from playing professionally.

After that, the Portland Trail Blazers, who were coached then by Jack Ramsay, decided to sign him on as an assistant coach. Adelman was kept from Ramsay’s firing and Mike Schuler’s hiring as his replacement in 1986. Two years later, during the 1988–1989 season, Adelman was promoted to interim coach after Schuler’s dismissal. Adelman was offered the job of head coach on a full-time basis during the offseason of the 1989 season after he successfully guided the club into the postseason the previous year, despite having a record of 39–43.

Adelman and the Trail Blazers had great success over the following three years. In 1990 and 1992, the team competed in the NBA Finals but was ultimately defeated by the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls, respectively. In 1991, the club competed in the Western Conference finals but was ultimately defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers. Adelman remained with the squad for two more years until being let go after the 1993–1994 campaign.

Adelman was given the position of head coach of the Golden State Warriors in the year 1995 after being hired for the job. After two years of working for the club, he was let go because he could not replicate his previous success in Portland. In 1998, the Sacramento Kings appointed Adelman as their head coach after he had been away from the team for the last year. The Kings were one of the most successful teams in the Western Conference when Adelman was the head coach. During his time in Sacramento, the Kings made the playoffs in every one of his seasons there.

The Kings faced up against Phil Jackson and the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs in the year 2000. As soon as Adelman discovered that Jackson had likened him to Adolf Hitler, he began to doubt the methods Jackson used to motivate his employees. The Kings had a legitimate shot of making it to the NBA Finals 2002. after securing the top spot in the Western Conference’s standings, the competition was fierce.

The Kings cruised through the first two rounds of the playoffs with ease but ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in a contentious series that included biased refereeing in favor of the Lakers. The Kings qualified for the postseason under Adelman’s direction in 2006, the last year of his contract. Even though the club struggled early on in the regular season, the Kings were able to turn things around and earn the eighth seed in the playoffs. Despite their competitive play, the San Antonio Spurs won the game 4–2 and retained their title as champions.

After the 2005–2006 season, Adelman’s agreement to play with the Kings ended. The information that his contract will not be extended was reportedly made public on May 9 by the Sacramento Bee. The Kings did not return to the playoffs until the year 2023, which is over 17 years after their last appearance. Adelman was hired as the new head coach of the Houston Rockets on May 23, 2007, only five days after Jeff Van Gundy was let go from his position as head coach.

Van Gundy had led the Rockets to the postseason three times in the previous four years, but they had never won a series under his watch. Adelman led the Rockets to their third-longest winning run in NBA history during his first season as head coach, which spanned from January through March 2008 and consisted of 22 consecutive victories. However, they were eliminated in the first round after losing all six games.

The Rockets concluded the 2009 season with a record of 53–29, enough for fifth place in the Western Conference. Because of an injury, they went into the playoffs without their star shooting guard, Tracy McGrady. Despite suffering this setback, the Houston Rockets were able to eliminate the Portland Trail Blazers in a best-of-seven series and go on to the semifinals of the Western Conference for the first time since 1997.

Even though the Los Angeles Lakers ultimately defeated them, the fact that they pushed the series to seven games demonstrates that they are a resilient team. This was the case even choosing center Yao Ming was in Game 3 of that series. On March 24, 2008, Adelman defeated the Sacramento Kings to earn his 800th career victory, making him the 13th-winningest coach in the history of the NBA.

According to a story published in the Houston Chronicle on April 18, 2011, the Rockets decided not to offer Adelman a new deal. Adelman and the organization parted ways after four seasons together and two trips to the playoffs. Adelman was officially introduced as the new coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves on September 13, 2011, after the team announced his hire.

In a game against the Detroit Pistons on April 6, 2013, Adelman won his 1,000th career game, making him only the sixth coach in the history of the NBA ever to accomplish this feat. Adelman announced retiring from coaching in the NBA on April 21, 2014. Additionally, it was disclosed that he would continue his association with the Timberwolves as a consultant.

In both the number of games coached and the number of games won, Adelman is ranked eighth. He finished the playoffs with a record of 79–78 (.503) and proceeded to the NBA Finals twice, both with the Portland Trail Blazers. Both times, they were defeated in the NBA Finals by the Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons, respectively. The National Basketball Coaches Association handed the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award to Adelman on Sunday, and it was revealed that he would be the 18th person to receive this honor.

It occurred before Game 2 of the NBA Finals, played between Denver and Miami. Nuggets assistant coach David Adelman is Rick Adelman’s son, while Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is a native of Portland and vividly recalls Adelman’s time coaching the Trail Blazers. Two of his former players are now competing in the championship series. Heat guard Kyle Lowry and Heat forward Kevin Love played under Adelman in either Houston or Minnesota before joining the Heat.
