His mother, Leah (née Posner, subsequently Adler; 1920–2017), was a restaurateur and concert pianist, and his father, Arnold Spielberg (1917–2020), was an electrical engineer who was active in the invention of computers. Both of his parents passed away before he was born. His personal family was in a precarious position.  Jews who follow the Reform or Orthodox traditions.  Spielberg’s paternal grandparents were Jews from Ukraine who had migrated to Cincinnati in the 1900s; his grandmother was from Sudylkiv and his grandfather was from Kamianets-Podilskyi.  Spielberg’s father was born in Cincinnati.  Steven Spielberg is the oldest of four siblings; his younger sisters are named Anne, Sue, and Nancy.  After his father was hired by RCA in 1952, his family uprooted and moved to Haddon Township in the state of New Jersey.

Spielberg received his Hebrew education from Rabbi Albert L. Lewis during the years 1953 and 1957 while he was enrolled in Hebrew school. Spielberg’s passion for motion pictures began when he was very young. His first home video was a train accident involving his toy Lionel trains, and he made it when he was 12 years old. He signed up to be a Boy Scout in 1958, and one of the requirements for earning the photography merit badge was to produce a nine-minute, 8-millimeter film titled “The Last Gunfight.”

In the end, he was successful in earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Spielberg began using the movie camera that belonged to his father to create his own amateur films, and he started bringing the camera on every Scout outing.  At the age of 13, Spielberg collaborated with a group of his schoolmates to create a war movie named “Escape to Nowhere,” which ran for forty minutes. The movie was awarded first place in a competition that was held across the state.  Spielberg began making 8 mm “adventure” films when he was in his early teens and continued doing so after he started high school. He produced perhaps fifteen to twenty of these films.

The family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, at the beginning of 1957. When Steven Spielberg was thirteen years old, he participated in a bar mitzvah ceremony. His family was quite active in their local synagogue and they had a large number of Jewish friends. According to him, his parents “spoke about it all the time, and therefore it was always on my mind.” This was mentioned in reference to the Holocaust. His grandfather had suffered the loss of sixteen to twenty relatives as a result of the Holocaust.  Spielberg had a hard time reconciling his Jewish history; he explained it this way: “It is not something that I take pleasure in confessing, but when I was seven, eight, or nine years old—please forgive me, God—I felt embarrassed because my family was Orthodox Jewish.

I felt ashamed because of how other people perceived the Jewish customs that my parents observed. I never truly felt ashamed of being Jewish, but there were occasions when it made me uncomfortable.” Anti-Semitism was also a problem for Steven Spielberg: “When I was in high school, I was frequently punched and assaulted. Two of their noses are bloody. It was a terrible situation.”  During his teenage years, he became estranged from Judaism as a result of his family’s relocation to other communities, when they discovered that they were the only Jews living there. Every Saturday throughout his time in Phoenix, Spielberg could be found at the community theatre seeing movies.

He identified a number of movies as early influences, including Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956), films directed by Akira Kurosawa, Captains Courageous (1937), Pinocchio (1940), and David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962), which he referred to as “the film that put me on my trip.”  In 1961, he was a student at Arcadia High School for a total of three years. In 1963, he created and directed his first independent film, which was a science fiction adventure titled Firelight and lasted for a total of 140 minutes. This picture would eventually serve as the inspiration for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. His father provided most of the funding for the movie, which had a budget of less than $600, and it was screened in a neighborhood theatre for just one evening.

During the summer of 1964, he was an assistant in the editorial department of Universal Studios, but he was not compensated for his labor. Sometime later, he and his family relocated to Saratoga, California, where he attended Saratoga High School and received his diploma in the year 1965. Exactly one year later, his parents went through with a divorce. Spielberg uprooted his family and relocated to Los Angeles to live with his father, leaving his three sisters and mother behind in Saratoga. He had no interest in pursuing a career in academia and instead wanted to work in the film industry. He submitted an application to the film school at the University of Southern California but was not accepted due to his lackluster academic performance. He subsequently submitted an application and enrolled at California State University, Long Beach, where he later joined the Theta Chi Fraternity as a brother.
