John Terry Biography and Career:

John George Terry is an English professional football coach and former player who played as a center-back. He was born on December 7, 1980, and his full name is John George Terry. Previously, he captained Chelsea, England’s national team, and Aston Villa. He also captained England. Most recently, he served in the capacity of assistant head coach at the latter. He is regarded as one of the greatest central defenders of his generation as well as one of the best English and Premier League defenders in the history of both competitions. He was once thought to be one of the best defenders in the world when he was at the height of his career. Terry was honored with the title of UEFA Club Defender of the Year in 2005, 2008, and 2009, PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2005, and selection to the FIFPro World XI for five consecutive seasons, beginning in 2005 and continuing through 2009, respectively.

Additionally, he was the only English player to make the all-star team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup and was selected for that squad’s all-star team. The most successful captain in Chelsea’s history is John Terry. During his 19 years with the club, he led them to five victories in the Premier League, four victories in the FA Cup, three victories in the League Cup, one victory in the UEFA Europa League, and one victory in the UEFA Champions League. He is one of only five players in Chelsea’s history to have played in more than 500 games for the club, and he is also the all-time leader in scoring among Chelsea defenders.  In 2007, he made history by becoming the first player to score an international goal at the new Wembley Stadium.

He scored a header for England in their 1–1 draw with Brazil, making him the first player to score an international goal at the stadium. He also became the first captain to win the FA Cup at the new Wembley Stadium.  In 2017, during his final season with Chelsea, he became the only player in Premier League history to ever captain a team to the league championship on five separate times. After leaving Chelsea, John Terry played one year in the Championship for Aston Villa before calling it quits. During his time with Aston Villa, the team competed in and ultimately lost the 2018 Championship play-off final. A few months later, he went back to Aston Villa and took the position of assistant manager under Dean Smith. The team went on to triumph in the 2019 Championship play-off final, earning promotion to the Premier League as a result of their victory.

In July 2021, Terry stepped down from his post. At the moment, he holds the position of coaching consultant at the youth academy of Chelsea. Terry joined West Ham United in 1991 as a midfielder after having been a member of the club’s development program when he was younger.  At the age of 14, he moved to Chelsea and began playing for the youth and reserve teams at the club. It was because there was a lack of central defenders that he was transferred to the position of center-back, and it was the position he played for the entirety of his career. At the age of 16, he began his career with the club after completing his schooling and signing professional terms the next year.

Terry made his debut for Chelsea on October 28, 1998, coming in as a late substitute in a League Cup matches against Aston Villa. Later that season, in the third round of the FA Cup, Chelsea defeated Oldham Athletic 2–0, and it was Terry’s first start for the club. In the year 2000, he was given the opportunity to gain first-team experience by spending a short time on loan at Nottingham Forest. At the time, the managers of both Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest, David Platt and Steve Bruce were interested in the player. In 2002, Terry was embroiled in an argument with a bouncer at a nightclub in West London along with Chelsea teammate Jody Morris and Wimbledon’s Des Byrne, which led to him being charged with assault and affray. Jody Morris and Des Byrne were also present during the incident. Terry was found not guilty of the allegations and acquitted in court in August of 2002.

As a consequence of the scandal, he was suspended from the England national team for the time being by The Football Association. Previously, in September 2001, Terry was fined two weeks’ wages by Chelsea along with his Chelsea teammates Frank Lampard, Jody Morris, and Eiur Gujohnsen as well as his former teammate Frank Sinclair for drunkenly harassing grieving American tourists in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Frank Sinclair was also a member of Chelsea. When Terry first started playing for Chelsea, Andrew Crofts was his roommate at the apartment he shared. Beginning with the 2000–2001 season, Terry began to establish himself as a regular member of Chelsea’s first squad.

He went on to make 23 starts and was selected as the club’s Player of the Year.  He continued to make strides forward during the 2001–02 season, and by the end of the year, he had established himself as a regular member of the defense, playing alongside club captain and France international Marcel Desailly. In a Premier League game against Charlton Athletic on December 5, 2001, he led Chelsea for the first time as captain. The game was part of the Premier League.  Chelsea advanced to the final of the FA Cup after victories against their London rivals West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth and sixth rounds respectively, as well as Fulham in the semi-final, where John Terry scored the lone goal in a 1–0 triumph over the Blues’ opponent. Terry was unable to start the championship game due to illness caused by a virus, but he did come on as a substitute in the second half of Chelsea’s match against Arsenal, which they lost 2-0.  Due to his outstanding play during the 2003–2004 season, manager Claudio Ranieri promoted him to the position of vice-captain while club captain Marcel Desailly was sidelined with an injury.

In the absence of the French national team player, he performed admirably and formed a formidable defensive tandem with William Gallas. After the departure of Desailly, the new manager of Chelsea, José Mourinho, selected Terry as the club captain. This choice was validated throughout the 2004–2005 season, during which Chelsea won the Premier League title in record-breaking fashion with the best defensive record in Football League history, including the cleanest sheets and the most points accumulated. His fellow professionals in England named him Player of the Year, and he finished the UEFA Champions League with eight goals, one of which was the game-winning goal in a late comeback against Barcelona. He was chosen by the fans of the Champions League to be the league’s finest defender for the season.  At the FIFPro awards ceremony that took place in September 2005, he was chosen to be a part of the World XI. The team was selected through a poll conducted among professional football players residing in forty different nations.

During the 2005–2006 season, Chelsea successfully defended their title as champions of the Premier League by accumulating 91 points and claiming victory over Manchester United by a score of 3-0. Terry was forced to take over in goal for Chelsea during the last minutes of their game against Reading on October 14, 2006, because both Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini, Chelsea’s other goalkeepers, sustained injuries throughout the game, and Chelsea was out of available substitutes at that point. Chelsea secured a one-nil victory thanks in large part to Terry, who did not allow an opponent to score. Terry was shown two yellow cards during the match against Tottenham Hotspur on November 5, 2006, which led to him being sent off for the first time in his career with Chelsea.

This loss at White Hart Lane was the first time the Blues had been defeated there since 1987. The FA has accused Terry of improper conduct for his comments made after the game in which he questioned the honesty of the referee who oversaw the game, Graham Poll.  After changing his mind and pleading guilty to the FA, Terry was sentenced to pay £10,000 for the inappropriate behavior on January 10, 2007. This came about as a result of his decision to pay the fine. Terry was sidelined for a number of games for Chelsea during the 2006–2007 campaign because of recurrent back issues. On December 26, 2006, José Mourinho suggested that it was possible that his captain may undergo surgery in order to resolve the issue. Over the Christmas break, Chelsea played Reading and Fulham in their own stadium and tied both games 2–2. These ties were significant in determining whether or not Chelsea would win the Premier League title for that season.

On December 28th, Chelsea released a press statement indicating that Terry had surgery to remove a sequestrated lumbar intervertebral disc. The statement said, “The operation to remove a sequestrated lumbar intervertebral disc was successful.” Although he was expected to return in the encounter against Wigan Athletic, which Chelsea won 3–2 courtesy of a late goal from winger Arjen Robben, Terry was absent once again owing to an ongoing back injury.  Chelsea won the match thanks to a late goal from Robben. He made his comeback on February 3, 2007, in Chelsea’s one-nil victory over Charlton Athletic. He came on as a substitute for Claude Makelele in the 88th minute of the game.  Terry earned a lot of acclaim from Chelsea supporters after playing his first full game in nearly three months, which was Chelsea’s 3–0 triumph over Middlesbrough. Terry played the full 90 minutes of football. During that encounter, Didier Drogba scored two goals for Chelsea, and Middlesbrough’s Abel Xavier scored an own goal, giving Chelsea a total of three goals.
